    I dial in my subwoofers using the Jurassic Park method. I play the movie while slowly increasing the gain until the glass of water on my coffee table starts rippling.

    OMG!!! I followed your steps exactly and it sounds awesome. Before, I would run Audyssey and leave it, but it never sounded right. The sub would be anemic, I would bump it's level up in the AV settings, now sub would overpower everything.
    By using this method, the sound is now one giant wall of powerful sound!!! Thank you so much.

  • @TheAboriginal1
    @TheAboriginal1 Před 7 měsíci

    I also use the "next room" test. I do all the steps here and while I'm testing I hop over to the next room and see if it still sounds good. If the bass is still muted I know to keep increasing. If it doesn't sound and FEEL like Bruce Springsteen is in your living room then keep adjusting.

    Your headset mic sounds less dynamic than the videocamera mic, like you're in a box.
    But it does cut out some of the annoying echo from the room, which by the way, could really use some acoustical treatment.
    That would be an interesting topic to cover, like basstraps and so on.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  Před 7 lety

      Yeah, I need a dedicated lavalier mic. My camera phone mic just wasn't picking up my voice like I need it to, and I haven't listened to this video on the setup yet. My laptop speakers are a joke, but I figure I need to make sure it's audible on something like that.
      Anything I do acoustically needs to be living room friendly. But you have given me a fun idea that I may try in the future. Any thoughts on living room friendly treatments?

    • @droidzhunterz6861

      Well I know you can get absorbers with a poster printed on them so they double as decoration.
      Then we have diffusers, which can look like modern art when mounted. You can also paint them to match the walls.
      For something less permanent you can get freestanding absorbers which can be moved out of the way when not in use.
      You can also hang absorbers from the ceiling. I believe they are called ceiling clouds to treat the front soundstage.
      To make them more appealing you can put LED lightstrips on top of them so they glow with indirect light which gives a nice "theater" look. Even better if its RGB to set the mood with dimmable controls.
      So many options, and it CAN look nice if done right :)

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  Před 7 lety

      +Droidz Hunterz Yeah the poster idea is what I was thinking. Didn't know they existed, don't know who makes them, but I was thinking about something similar with my own designs printed on speaker fabric, with absorbing foam behind it.
      All Interesting ideas. Whether I can truly get them to look like they truly belong in a living room is the trick. I have a lot of fun, but I don't want my wife to feel like it's not her living room anymore.
      So far, she has no complaints, and I prefer to keep it that way. Who makes those posters?

    turning up the sub till it Fills in what has been missing is great advice..yes most newbies overdrive the sub so it completely dominates the track instead of complimenting it...they want to "hear and feel " the bass that they have paid for! I know a guy who does same with his surround channels, he thinks he should be hearing them All the time ,like his main speakers! otherwise, he feels they arent working...try to tell him that they Arent suppossed to be loud like the fronts and center and he will agrue the point..soooo , he runs his system with overblown bass and super loud surrounds..."as long as YOU like it bro" thats what matters!

      Share this video with him, as well as my "Speaker Level Hack" which uses specific content to properly level your channels even better than room correction: czcams.com/video/cL4IEkSFoiw/video.html
      He may want to see the Atmos Hack, even if he doesn't have Atmos, or the "Unlock Your Blu Ray Hack". All too often, people aren't getting the lossless audio because of an annoying default setting in their Blu Ray player, which also screws with how the surround speakers sound. Hi Ryan!
    Yesterday, I reran Audyssey, this time with close measurement points as in your video, near our seating area. Our week old SVS PB1000 Pro Subwoofer position is cornered with about 8 inches away from the front left side wall.
    Read SVS tutorials from website and our PB1000 Pro sub instructions card. Set -15 on the Subwoofer volume before the Calibration. After completion, the AVR set Subwoofer level at -8.5db.
    Finally, I set it at default -10 on the Subwoofer volume and -4.0db on the AVR Subwoofer trim level.
    It sounds great and cohesive right off the bat! I would settle for this, unless there's something off that I am not aware about.
    Please advise. Thanks 😊

      I have one of those Kill O Watt meters, and my power is pretty good to begin with. I may request one for review at some point to give it an honest shot, but it's not at the top of my list at the moment. If my power was wonky, I'd be a lot more interested.
      I wonder about the performance increase per dollar spent, my general take is that it's up there with expensive speaker cables for those who already have good power, but I admit I could be misinformed. I certainly haven't thought to myself, "my power sounds dirty", but then you don't know what you don't know.
      If any reviews stand out to you, I'd be interested to check them out if you would post a link.

      Subwoofer 101 I was only made aware of conditioners when a friend, who has a music studio, came over and I showed off my new PB-2000's and Klipsch system. As soon as he sat down he recommended I get a conditioner. I have everything in a surge protector and figured I'm fine, but recently I've been learning a lot about different brands and benefits of having one. Apparently Furman is the king in this dept. So now I'm saving for one.

      @TheBloodWolfFang Před 7 lety

      As someone who has a power conditioner for my Desktop setup with studio monitors and a second for my home theater set up I don't user power conditioners to improve my audio. I use them as better surge protectors as I don't trust the several thousand dollars of tech to a cheap power strip/surge protector.
      I bought my first conditioner to help with audio quality though as at that time I was living in a home with 5v of fluctuation which caused popping sounds on my monitors. New apartment doesn't have that issue but still worth it to me.

    Yeah, i don't really think(gotta compare in everry circumstances , and then you can decide yourself), this recommendation on setting one's AVRs sub gain setting levels to "0" , and then conversely adjusting the actual powered sub(s) levels , will IMPROVE DYNAMICS! ..at least as a blanket result that's always the case..or even usually the case! Relative gain the subs amplifier sees should be basically the same, regardless of he relationship between AVR gain output vs input, and the subs own internal gain from the volume nob. And IF there is a consistently correct setting guideline betwixt the two grains, then its likely a very small relative variable difference im thinking. In fact , especially on THX recommended products, im sure the recommended setup parameters world recommended setting one gain either higher or lower, relatively speaking, if it did indeed matter !!!
    If i remember correctly, on a THX subwoofer, there is usually a THX dedicated switch that defeats the gain control all together(assuming maximum sub gain default) , and you must adjust levels (above "0" ) on your AVR pr pre pro from there!.
    Although it's been a while since ive used THX equip. Gonna go research.
    HOWEVER, regardless, its simply going to come down to comparing, listening, and measuring, to be 100% sure which settings yields the best results. Then nothing matters but the results anyway

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  Před 4 lety

      The PB-2000 (original, not the Pro version) is on special right now, that's pretty close. Also check the SVS Outlet, sometimes they have the PB12-NSD in stock.
      Or do you have the PB-12 Plus? 1 port or 3?
      So long as you order factory direct, you would have a one year trade-in window. I mention that because the PB-2000 Pro's are pretty awesome.
      The Pro's true potency would get lost if paired with a PB12-NSD, it's a weird thing that happens. Weaker sub tends to determine the potency. Weakest link kind of thing.
      Let me know if that helps!

    Hi, really enjoy your vids (from the UK). Just a quick question please, Audyssey suggests a 75dB sub match at the start but to me that is far too low. Do you set yours to 75dB to run Audyssey and then go in and up the subs after, or do you run them hot from the start? I've tried it many ways but I prefer to ignore the Audyssey suggestion and run mine at 84dB from the start. Just seems to sound much better, but am I wrong doing this?? Thanks in advance.

      His method is this:
      1. Run Audyssey
      2. Back off Audyssey's sub level to -6 and below.
      3. Drop sub volume knob to zero
      4. Play some bass heavy music of your liking
      5. Slowly raise sub volume on the sub till it sounds right to you
      Method worked wonderfully for me.

  • @luisdaniloancheta2823

    You mentioned about gain, how about phase? When do you use phase? And how do you use phase effectively? What are phase for? On the other hand, my sub is crossover to 80Hz and all speakers set to small. When do you set to LFE? Thanks.

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  Před 7 lety +2

      +Luis Danilo Ancheta Phase is a matter of timing, if two speakers are "in phase", their cones move forward at exactly the same time. If their phase was 180 degrees from one another, or opposite phase, one cone would move forward while the other moved backwards. This is almost impossible to see in real time.
      I set the phase to zero and use the distance settings to effectively adjust phase. When you use room correction, it adjusts timing so that everything is "in phase" accounting for different physical distances. (I believe). So all of the sound should hit you at the proper time, more or less.
      Bass tends to cancel a little like this, and what I've found for me is that adding about 4 feet to the subwoofer distance works out pretty well. The bass is a little fuller that way, and REW measurements support this.
      In short, I leave phase at zero on the subs, and make any timing/phase adjustments using the distance settings in the AVR.

    • @tallpaull9367
      @tallpaull9367 Před 3 lety +1

      To Manually set Phase correctly (not using room correction such as Audyssey):
      - let your speakers play full range (ie: mine play down to 50Hz)
      - set crossover on sub to 10Hz above (ie: mine 60Hz)
      - Play some music with bass, adjust volume so Sub is noticeable but not too loud
      - play the lowest frequency of your speakers (ie: mine 50Hz tone). can download a free tone generator app for phone or computer…)
      - use SPL meter ( or smartphone with SPL meter app works). I use settings C-Weighted, Fast, Low on SPL meter)
      - cycle through Phase settings (typical 0, 45, 90, 135, 180, 225, 270, 315) and look for the lowest SPL level = Null Point
      - if Null Point is 0-180 then add 180 = your Phase setting. if Null Point is 181-359 then subtract 180 = your Phase Setting.
      - now you can play with your Crossover settings (ie: Speakers set to 70 Hz, Subwoofer to 80 Hz. etc…)
      If Dual subs are both in front like in this video, use this method to setup each subwoofer individually (or just use the same setting). If running one sub on front wall and one sub on rear wall then flip phase 180 degrees from the setting you determined on front sub. (ie: if front sub 135, then rear sub 315)
      enjoy !

  • @Stevo19801

    Where is the sub gain video you mentioned? What is the theory of uping the sub gain and lowering the avr trim. I have to run my denon avr at -11 to get 10 o'clock on my sub gain dial. Do svs recommend the trim down sub gain up idea?

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  Před 7 lety

      +Stevo19801 That video got deleted. I selected a different video to delete, but that one disappeared instead. I need to upload it again.
      But yes, the higher the gain on the subs, the more dynamic they will sound. Ed Mullen and I both agree that so long as your AVR subwoofer trim isn't bottomed out, you should be good. By running a little higher gain on the subs, it's almost like getting a more powerful sub. So long as it's still balanced, I see it as a great adjustment, apartment dwelling aside.
      For apartments, I suggest going the other way to reduce bleeding over to neighboring apartments, bringing the AVR trim up and gain on the subs down. In that case, I wouldn't go over 0.0 on the AVR. For apartments, people can still get the depth, but reduce dynamics to keep the peace a little better.

    • @Stevo19801
      @Stevo19801 Před 7 lety

      Subwoofer 101 so if I have the trim to -11 on my denon amp and the gain on the sub at 11 o'clock to reach 75db that's fine, as you say I just don't want the trim on the denon at -12 (it's limit). what's is wrong with going to -12 on the amp and turning the sub up to 12 o'clock then?

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  Před 7 lety

      +Stevo19801 So long as the balance of bass plays well with music and movies, not at thing in the world. When the subs seem intrusive, that's a sign that you might need to back it down. That point is different with everyone.
      You can also run the AVR trim a little higher than audyssey to have thicker bass. When I was running dual PB-2000's, I had both subs gain at 65% and the AVR trim at -9.0 or so. Super thick bass with great dynamics, but still not intrusive to my ear. So long as your happy with the sound, that's all that's important.
      Room correction never has it as bass heavy as I'd like, and it's ok to color outside of the lines. Especially with subs that have a flat response, you can run the subs heavier with less penalty, where typical shallow subs will be unbearable at certain frequencies if you turn it up too much.
      Which subs are you running?

    • @Stevo19801
      @Stevo19801 Před 7 lety

      If it's at -12 and it's still too much, it's bottomed out. If it's at -12 and still sounds good, it's not bottomed out.

      I was interested in SVS initially for the subwoofers. Without a doubt, their speakers have been a very pleasant surprise. I've emailed back and forth with Smith Freeman, the head design engineer, and he was shooting for a sound that mimicked some very impressive and expensive speakers.
      The design of the Prime Center is very good, with high quality crossovers and drivers. It's also built like a tank. I've spent nearly 2 years with this center channel and it has never disappointed me. I believe you will be pleased, most are. It's hard to find fault with them.
      If it's not trouble, please follow this link: sub101.link/PrimeCenter

      Have you heard the new Class D design, which is very well thought out for driving subs?
      Lastly, the ported subs on my list, including and especially SVS, tend to have more relative output under 40 hertz compared to their sealed counterparts.
      This provides a deeper depth of presentation, even if the sealed extend deeper in room.
      I did a video called "Going deep versus sounding deep", which explains more, but the ported subs on my list have a deeper sound than the vast majority of subs out there.
      This creates its own set of problems, which I talked about in my most recent video.
      In short, I don't believe I would abandon the subs on my best subwoofers list.
      Class D amplification is the way to go for subs these days, that's for sure.

      I evaluated at my home a SB 6000 fir a week vs my Hypex nCore amp with pair 10” sealed peerless XLS subs and miniDSP 2x4hd in music it was far better in some movie scenes SVS was better but I choose pair fir overall price and sheer performance and fexibility
      There were many bass effects I couldn’t hear on SVS

      SVS doesn't make an SB-6000, so I'm not sure which one you heard, but regardless, ported offer more kick below 40 hertz.

    So do you suggest turning up gain first then volume to get in the sweet spot of -10db to -6db? Or would you keep gain at 0 and adjust volume for the sweetspot? I have a rythmik fv15hp. Thanks in advance

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  Před 7 lety

      Sometimes your AVR has subwoofer level matching in the room correction, shooting for a gain of 75 db. I set mine to 82--83 instead, which should get you there. With a single, you might be pushing the sub to misbehave, another matching sub would really make a difference and be loads better overall. Otherwise, yes, bump the gain first. No matter how you get there, if the AVR trim sounds balanced between -6 and -10 (I'm running -11.5 and it sounds good) you should be in good shape.

    Are SVS PB 2000's considered "flat?"

    • @Subwoofer101
      @Subwoofer101  Před 3 lety

      That's a very interesting question, with a lot of answers!
      For sure, it has a very flat anechoic (& outdoor ground plane) response curve. It's been referred to as ruler flat, which is good.
      However, because of room gain, it gets a little louder as it goes deeper.
      So in room response is not flat.
      But our hearing is funky, because the deeper the bass is, the harder it is to hear.
      So, while the answer is yes and no, they sound like they have a very flat response curve in room.
      So the short answer is yes, but it's a complicated way of getting there. 😂

      Had to wait 4 months for the second PB-16 because they kept selling out.
      After days of trying to get them all to work together, and just listening to the single PB-16, I just turned the PB-16 off, in favor of the dual PB-2000's. Crazy, but true.
      Once I got the second PB-16 Ultra, I finally understood what the big deal was. Holy TNT batman!

      Sounds like your sub gain is too high on the unit. You want your AVR level somewhere around -6.0 db. Turn the gain down and repeat the process until it sounds really good at around -6.0dB. That level still gives you a ton of headroom. At -15 it probably sounds boomy

      @andrewpolitano Před 6 lety +1

      That's ok. Egg crates don't work anyway. You should build some absorption panels using OC703 or equivalent and wrap them with printed art on canvas though. That will not only look appealing to the wife and family, but also be porous enough in relation to sound waves, allowing the 703 to soak up those reflections. Gotta be quite thick to be used as bass traps, but for about $150 you can make around 6 of them and stick them at the first/second reflection points or behind your listening position for an ENORMOUS difference in reflected sound.

      What is the AVR subwoofer level set to? In the Setup/Audio/Subwoofer Level menu. Enable adjustment and tell me what the value is.
      What is the distance setting for the subwoofer? It's in the Setup/Speakers/Manual/Distances menu. If you haven't adjusted it, try adding between 1 and 4 feet to the value determined by Audyssey. Mine sets it as 11.7 feet, and I run it at 15.7 feet.
      You can also go back and start the Audyssey process, aim for a 82 db target and then back out. No need to run the whole thing. 75 DB is way too soft for my taste.

    Somehow my av receiver on volume 30 to 35 sound much better and more powerful bass, my av receiver Pioneer vsx-932 have volume from 81min to 1max volume. But 30 to 35 volume is the best! If i will go louder, let say 20 or 15 volume, subwoofers will burn, svs sb2000 and klipsch R-115SW and R-112SW. If i will lower gain on subwoofers, then bass is not so powerful. Better to lower crossover on subwoofers, and gain on maximum, in av receiver sub db on 0
    this for me work and house shake from bass, and i feel small wind in room from low bass. Great.
    More volume on av receiver or sub db level on minus in av receiver not mean better bass, in my case is worst and weaker bass.

      There is some paranoia I'm sure, but having fibromyalgia plays a part as well.
      There are many reasons behind it, and I don't mean to insult my audience.
      If I have to worry about my appearance, it's one more complication that takes away from what I can produce, which is already pretty limited. I'd do a video every day if I could muster the energy.
      I even stopped using my lights just to increase my shooting time. Seems ridiculous, but that's the level of limitation I deal with.
      I value my anonymity, and unlike so many CZcamsrs, I have NO desire to be famous. I don't mind if my ideas are "famous" (lol) but the thought of being recognized is not appealing, which might be different if my health was more predictable.
      I know, strange choice of occupation, but I enjoy the topic. I have times when I can't understand simple spoken English, and the more interaction I have, the more likely that is to occur. They call it "fibro fog".
      In your store scenario, I already find myself apologizing to friends and neighbors who don't understand why I was acting odd. My brain "shorts out".
      Sometimes people are mad at me for long periods of time because they thought it was personal. I find myself explaining why I wasn't acting friendly like usual, almost like I am now with you.
      Expanding that problem sounds terrible to me, but it's not meant to insult anyone.
