The del Sol does actually have cupholders! They're really hidden though. If you open the center console, there's a little flap under the lid with 2 holes in it that folds down. You need to keep the lid up to use them, but they do indeed exist.

let's be fair though, it was a 90s cupholder, so MAYBE a medium sized drink max from a drive thru in the US

@@crojackbojangles Also, if you had a cup in the cupholder, it made it really awkward to shift gears because you had curve your arm around the cup.

    • @crojackbojangles
      @crojackbojangles Před rokem

okay but hear me out, if you have a 1 liter drink (with a cap) you can place it between the seat and belt buckle as an impromptu holder, without it impeding your shifting arm (passenger can do the same!) @@edmontondigitalmedia2202

0:36. The Si was the mid trim, the "VTEC" was the upper trim. The VTEC, released in 1994, was the US's rough equivalent to the SiR. It was the US debut of the B16. It had a larger front sway bar over the Si, as well as the addition of a rear sway bar (which the Si did not have), and it also came with ABS (again the Si didn't have). The VTEC also came with a front strut tower brace. Of course, mated to the B16 was a B transmission with different gear ratios to better play to the B16's 8k+ rev limiter. (The first two years came with the B16A3 with a 8200 red line, and the later years came with the B16A2 with 8k red line, and each came with the respective matching tachs.)

3:15. The entire instrument cluster is unique to the del Sol, as are many other parts. Not only that, the del Sol picture is functional. It tells you things like whether the truck is closed, or if you left the rear window down.

Nice one. That cover that hides the aftermarket radio is a good security feature as well. Makes it look it there is no radio in the car. Good idea.

These weren't that common back in the day, and even more scarce today. I think a lot of people felt let down after the CRX was discontinued, but I think the Del Sol is a cooler car, especially with the targa top and that smooth, reliable drive you get in a 1990s Honda.

so funny just the other day I went down a long del sol craigslist, car gurus, and autotrader rabbit hole, my friend's uncle had one in lime green as a kid, and ive always been fascinated by them. couldnt believe how scarce they were on the internet, seems like they are actually rare these days, especially in good condition, like many cheap sports cars seems like many were just not taken care of. congrats on 50k!

Nice informative video, I want one. I'm a BIG MANUAL TRANSMISSION FAN. My first car in 1971 was a 1959 VW BUG, it was a DOG as far as acceleration but with 36hp what do you EXPECT. I got about 25mi/gal. with it and the gas pedal stayed at the floor board most of the time. That was the only way to get some speed out of it by REVING THE PISS out of the first 3 gears. When you speed shift to 4th gear the engine goes from a SCREAMING REVS to a PATHETIC LOAF, NO LUNG WHAT SO EVER JUST A DRAMATIC CHANGE IN ENGINE REVS, that is at 55mph which I drove most of the time.😁 Then I got a 1964 MGB, IT WAS GREAT. IT WAS "FAST" compaired to the BUG. The next FUN CAR was a 1974 Fiat X1/9 which was a BLAST to drive, had NO POWER (1300cc+4speed manual that 4th gear was a slight overdrive) but it stuck to the ROAD especially after I changed the tires from 145SR-13 to 185/60VR-13. It was like driving a GO CART, STEAL YOUR BREATH AWAY. It was my 3/4 scale FERRARI, only thing was I didn't have ANY POWER to get myself into TROUBLE but it got great gas mileage. I LOVED THE TARGA TOP, EASY TO TAKE OFF AND PUT ON. It was like the Del Sol as far as where the top was stored but in the FRONT instead of the back, IT WAS MID-ENGINE (like the Ferrari). The top was OFF most of the time because it was so easy to remove and if it rained if I didn't stop (like on a trip practically NO RAIN came in except for a occasional little drop or 2 coming off the edge of the driver's door window.😲😁. I miss that CAR. I've got a 1997 VW Cabrio that I'm thinking about RESTORING but I recently saw a 1994 Honda Del Sol VTEC with a 5speed manual that I may consider possibly changing my mind but it is PRETTY BEATUP and don't know about the engine or the transmission, clutch condition as well or HOW MUCH the person wants? KEEP ON REVING THEM UP BUT BE CAREFUL 😉😁👍

The Delsol is not a missed opportunity but a miss understood car.
    Why? Because it was:
    Snubbed by European brand owners
    Snubbed by Prestige brand owners
    Snubbed by high displacement owners
Snubbed by high powered car owners
Snubbed by rear wheel drive car owners (Front wheel drive cars still relatively new with virtually all main stream cars up to the mid 80's being rear wheel drive).
This is where it adds on:
Design language shock - Era of first of the new design language departing from decades of square shapes, irking people not used to seeing a curved design
Even Honda people blame it for the demise of the square CRX
Honda made the error of using many names confusing or not giving its separate identity (CRX, CR-X Del Sol, Civic Del Sol, Del Sol etc)
Era of cars increasing in size and weight of cars (due to move away from economy fuel crises of the 70's) but also heavy safety hardware being made compulsory or introduced (Side impact beams, front and rear bar impact supports, ABS modules/pumps, Air Bags) irking some people still wanting light weight.
    Conclusion:
The Del Sol received criticisms for being misunderstood. But looking back the Del Sol was ahead of its time:
Car design language have become similar (no longer box and wedge designs)
Front engine and front wheel drive is the most economical format (now most widely used configuration). Front engine cars with rear wheel drive suffers power losses when transferring to the rear.
Front wheel drive is safer with more intuitive natural recovery reaction in emergency situation vs rear wheel drive. Rear wheel drive also has snap over steer tendencies.
All points to the Del Sol just being the spear head of cars to come.
You only need to look at the current Miata RF to see how ahead the Del Sol was.
The Miata RF is not only mimicking the design (Targa roof and flying buttresses) but also has dimensions and weight like the Del Sol.

  • @WannaBeatle-Paul_McMichael

I had (have) a '93 Si, too. but, mine was completely ruined by my mechanic a few years back. so, it's just sat in my garage for centuries. but, when it worked I thought it was superb and I loved it to death. it had a couple of minor design issues - a blind spot here and there and one other thing I can't recall. but, other than that, it performed really well and kept a ticking even while it was dying a premature death.
I was gonna restore mine. but, times are super tough for me now and I'm seriously considering selling it (probably a lot of people want the parts).

@@ShootingCars Ok yeah I think they didn't make that much of the Del sols. I think back then buyers were just coming out of the American car era 60s 70s and it was still hard to take Japanese cars seriously. It didn't help that both cars ( Miata, Del Sol) in this segment had a feminine image. They probably had a better image in Europe where small 2 seat sport cars were a part of the lineage eg M.G.B, Triumph, E type Jaguar etc. Even Mugen had to pull out of the USA because they weren't doing well.

Is there a serious issue that is causing white smoke to come out of the exhaust of the Del Sol? Cause I've read on the internet that if you have white smoke coming out of your exhaust then there's a problem and something might be wrong with your cars engine or transmission.
