Revisiting this again, I think that Homer is probably the best boomer lmao. Let us all hope we can be better people so that there won’t be anyone who would undergo such depressing childhoods and growth, because Marge became the best thing to happen to him and as touching as it is, it is also just so much more depressing, he needed her and he appreciates her too. What a good show, shame nowadays we won’t have more of these
@@PeruvianPotato Show started in the late 1980s, Bart was like 9 and Lisa was 7 or 8. In the earliest episodes Homers more of a strait-man, almost like a TV dad from the "silents generations". Marge was the goofy dysfunctional one, getting drunk at Mr. Burns company picnic, etc. Later episodes established a HS graduation date, for Homer, of like 1974 to 76 or so, with him meeting Marge his senior year of HS. That established him as a boomer, probably born 1957 to 59 or so. Depending on who you speak to, Boomers end in 1962 or 65. Gen X begins 1963-66 and ends 1980 or 1985. Later on, Homer became goofier and Marge became more strait laced. TV writers call this, "changing the cannon of the show". Although the times changed with the show, everyone stayed the same age cause it just worked out better for the writers that way.
@@RaptorFromWeegee Good point. I always thought of Homer as a later Boomer. It's hard to quantify when they didn't age but time passed. When the Simpsons began, I was about Bart's age - Homer was my dad's generation. Now I'm older than Homer. 🤔

Him choking Bart was fucked up😂 but other than that he was a good dad, who tried his best to make his family happy, and that’s why he was so loveable in the early seasons.
I dont think Homer's had a happy life at all. Follow the line: the abandonement of his mother made his household crumble, his father was deppressed so he didnt support his son in any other way than putting a roof over his head - and even the building started falling apart. Homer started picking up corrosive behaviours from his father, who beat him often and made him feel like an useless idiot all the time. He met Marge and she abandoned her studies. She was kind of talented, she could have had a very different life, but she got pregnant pretty early and she left her dreams behind to take care of her house and her husband. That's what happened to a lot of women back then, the usual path was getting married and being a housekeeper. Now what? Both Homer and her closed a lot of doors that could have taken them to very different lives. Instead, they become an abusive, failed father and a mother whose life spins around taking care of others, respectively. Homer is happy because he's a conformist, but everything in his life is constantly falling apart because he isnt capable of keeping his shit together. Of course, that's part of the satire in the show. It's so cruel yet they play it for the comedy. The concept is very dark, but, in the end, we"re so used to see people like this everywhere we look that we recognise it and even relate to it.
But you’re severely discounting the fact that they’re a happy family. They go through stressful times and situations, as everyone does, but they’re a family who loves each other deep down. Would Marge’s potentially more flashy degree and career truly have been a better life? Hard to say.. I grew up in a lower middle class suburban family home with two siblings. There was fighting, there were money struggles, but overall I had an amazing childhood that I am infinitely grateful for. The hard times were a tiny drop in an ocean of beautiful memories and love. Now I see my sister (who has been an over-achiever her entire life) who spent SO much time, money, and stress going to school to get a fancy medical degree and a big house, but.. She seems angry, tired, and stressed ALL the time. Myself and my other sister are both stay at home parents with more modest houses and income, both with children and spouses of our own, and I’d say we’re much much happier than she is. Just like we all were as kids together living in our modest childhood family home. I don’t think Marge would trade her children and husband for more money, fame, and fancier things. Enjoying life and being happy, those are the things that are truly the most important, or at least should be. The _vast_ majority of people live normal lives and never achieve anything substantial or make it into any sort of history books, but that doesn’t mean they don’t feel fulfilled and happy. Throughout all of K-12 I said I wanted to be an artist. I wanted to make paintings or animation. I got an art degree. I still like art. Do I feel like I “closed doors” for myself by choosing to get married and have a family? Absolutely not. A million out of a million times I would choose my children and wife over trying to become more known for making art.
@@thelittlestgiant First of all, I'd like to thank you so much for sharing your life experience. The way you described it makes it feel beautiful and full of fulfilling experiences. I sincerily congratulate you and hope you continue to enjoy the place you've built in life for yourself and your loved ones. Maybe the point I was trying to make with my comment came through much different than I expected. I myself was raised in a dysfunctional family (in my case, the paternal figure was lacking) and I've never valued anything above human warmth and joyful experiences with people. Not money, nor job qualifications, nor anything else. I don't believe Marge would be happier if she didn't marry Homer, not necesarily at least. I simply believe he wasn't the right choice, they don't fit each other, or maybe it wasn't the right moment. However, the problem is not that Homer is a failed attempt at adulthood, it's just that he came undone. He didn't get to a point where he could evaluate his trajectory in life and take a turn. Before that could happen, Marge was pregnant with Bart. That's the point where two young people have to become adults, because their situation demands it. They don't have a choice. Furthermore, that transition to adulthood is just apparent: they keep some of the juvenile behaviour they had (you can see that specially in Homer, he's a man-child in many aspects). That hits a person hard as a brick. I don't mean to say that, if that happens to you (or even if you choose this path in your life), you are condemned. Even if a person admittedly made a mistake when they took this road, they can be happy and enjoy their life. Homer, Marge and the kids enjoy life in most situations, I agree. But look at Homer in the latter part of this video, when he's getting older. Does he seem happy? Does a happy man beat his son? I get it, I said before: the show plays it for comedy. But this narrative is dark as tar. Like in real life, even in the most horrible times of a person's life there's joy to be found. True joy. Somebody engraved on a brick at Auschwitz's concentration camp "life is all there is". I didn't want to read too deeply into the Simpson's message, the show offers many. On one hand, Homer's life was wasted (and he kind of knows it) because he could have built a much better one. On the other, the circumstances made him choose that path and he got many beautiful things from it. Both narratives happen at the same time. I hope I haven't been too dense. This video evoked many thoughts to me. Again, thank you for your contribution, you reminded me my humanity for a bit there.
finally, the only thing that went well in his miserable life was his relationship with marge. that explain why he's ready to commit suicide when he think messed this relation up.

Literally watching the episode where Abe calls Homer an "accident" while on the road, this just makes this sadder. I hope having a family with Marge changed his life for the better in the end.
You know, considering where he comes from, he managed to do a decent job at this whole life thing. Got a loving wife, 3 kids, a house and a few good friends
It’s sad how Homer tried to end his life more than once, first time being from Season 1, episode 3, Homer’s Odyssey, with the brick tied to him on probably the same bridge as the one from this episode (Season 19 episode 9)
There was the episode where he bowled a perfect game. He jumped off that building and the only thing that saved him was grabbing onto Otto, who was bungee jumping at the time.

Homer was actually so traumatized from his childhood that he automatically lived the same way as his father did. And the more he's drinking over all the decades the more hes getting dumber and his life gets worse.
In a later Christmas episode which is set years into the future, Homer has given up alcohol and has some new hobbies like collecting those miniature ships in bottles and he is a pretty good grandfather to Bart's sons
Well we can imagine that she went to the motel a couple day to take a break from the relation then she came back and eventualy left when homer was sleeping but yeah this is kinda dumb

I'd say that my life is better (and less damaging to myself and my loved ones), so
I'll stick with that.
1:22 This man is such an amazing Artist
There's a little bit of Homer Simpson in all of us even most people don't want to admit it.
I'm scared of how much my life looks like Homer's. Life just moves and there's nothing we can do about it
You often have a choice, even if you don't realise it.
@@yukononun Very true. Also, as medical technology moves forward people will start to live much longer, with a higher quality of life. If you're a young guy, you've got a lot to look forward to, provided you make the right moves.
If you're a boomer or gen-x theres still a chance you might live past the time when advanced genetic tech really starts to kick in. So you still got a bit of a chance of benefiting from The Singularity.
Next time you're scared tell yourself what paratroopers say before jumping, "It just doesn't matter, it just doesn't matter..."
That was depressing.
This is actually kind of inspirational - he was born into such a messy family, not much intelligence himself
But through just surviving and getting through it he got a decent house (a palace as grimes called it)
beautiful supportive wife, kids who are themselves and have a happy stable home - throughout all that crap, he broke the cycle and you can too!
Nothing in the world like this little combination that snowballs called being yourself and pushing through.
What a good show, shame nowadays we won’t have more of these
He rarely appreciates her, though.
I think he’s gen X
@@akkikishore3770Homers shown to be in his mid 30s by the show's airing. The oldest Gen X would've been only 24 yesrs old by 1989
@@PeruvianPotato Show started in the late 1980s, Bart was like 9 and Lisa was 7 or 8.
Damn this actually hits hard, i get very bad grades at school and I blame it a lot on my memory but it’s obvious I have some form of a learning difficulty and really has just made me not care about trying, because I know no matter how hard I try I will never achieve the things I want with the brain that I was born with it really makes me consider if I should be alive at times
Ik it seems hard, but you do deserve to exist, no matter how different your mental state may be. Never let anyone tell you otherwise. You have something that you can do for the world, and you need to stick to whatever that may be and follow that thing through hell and high water. I know you can do it
It's worth it. I have ADD, and I've been able to achieve things, not everything I wanted, but quite a lot. You just need the right help. The world is built for neurotypicals, just like sidewalks are made for those who can walk. But there are lots of accomodations at your disposal living in the times we do. Don't let your disability ever hold you back. Perhaps look into finding out what it is, and you could get medication for it, or find life techniques that work for you, or find counseling. Don't worry about bad grades either, the school system as a whole is very flawed.
@@aguy7848 thank you so much for this. I have ADD as well and that really made me feel a lot better. Especially now...where everything seems to fall apart.
it's gonna be alright man, I know you can do this, and yes, you do deserve to live, you're an awesome person with so many skills, I believe you don't even realize how many skills you could have. Please be strong and always believe and love yourself.

It's amazing how, despite his rough childhood, Homer still manages to be a great dad (except when he strangles bart)
He is not great dad.
@@Fab1us he was in the early seasons.
@@WiredLain_ he wasn't.
@@Fab1us yea he was, he did the best he could and always tried to take care of bart n lisa n would sacrifice his own needs if it meant making them happy, and he always supported his kids, he was a great dad. Him choking Bart was fucked up😂 but other than that he was a good dad, who tried his best to make his family happy, and that’s why he was so loveable in the early seasons.
@@WiredLain_ him choking Bart is still child abuse my dude. I wouldn’t call him a great Dad
His dad did at least get him to lose weight which showed he still cared😥
@@saulgoodman2071 I found it very funny than Saul Goodman himself took the time to answer my comment.
