- Hey guys. I have seen on every BMW forum, that many of you are getting the dreaded drivetrain error, so I thought I would put a video out for you, explaining the basics.

@@mattsbeamer need some advice, got drivetrain malfunction msg, it’s come on a few times in the last week, I have a 66 plate bmw 330e, light goes off after cooling car down, I noticed the temperature gauge is temperamental, doesn’t always warm up, car doesn’t go in to limp mode, I do feel a tug and a bit lumpy performance, used a recommended tool reader came up with pinion starter timeout several times. I’ve been told it’s the timing belt, not sure myself any advice would be amazing car currently on 89k and hybrid battery charges normally too
You’re 💯 correct Matthew. On 20 January 2023 I changed Ignition Coil and spark plugs on my BMW 116i F20, the Drivetrain disappeared and the car is no longer having a rough idling nor loosing power.
I've had my 2014 550i to the BMW dealer 3 times now. Nothing shows up. Drives fine after a bit of resting of the car. It's very inconvenient. I've had 2 fuel pumps replaced. I watched another video and it said anything from chargers for phones in a car can lower battery power and cause a power loss. Can be anything. My car has been scanned 3 times. The BMW dealer mechanic hit a pothole while testing the car and blew a tire. So now I get a new tire and alignment. Strut is fine. These are very delicate cars. Also letting it sit to long can cause the drivetrain malfunction. I've had smoke white smoke come out and nothing shows up. It's been at the BMW dealer for a week now. Pick it up on Friday so tomorrow. I'm having my guy bring the loaner back cause I do not wanna drive it home. Lol. We live in the River Valley with steep hills. But a person should be able to live anywhere and have this car and not have issues. Such a frustrating situation.

Good Video. I have a F20. The IAT sensor become dodgy and popped the drivetrain error every 20ish miles. Another was overtaking at 60mph, popped a coil pack during overtake, felt like the rear axle fell off when dropping into limp mode. Simple errors, but the BMW ding is very frightening. Even just telling the low outside temperatures.
Also, an auxiliary turbo water pump become blocked, this can light up the drivetrain error with no limp mode. Common fault, plastic pump/blades that continues to carry hot fluids away from the turbo after the car is turned off. It is not a required part for the running of the engine. it will run absolutely fine without it. it'll just reduce the lifespan of the turbo very slightly.
Have had this error thrown twice now on my 330e. On both occasions it was while on the motorway at about 65 and using cruise control and then had to touch the brakes. As you would expect, this should simply disengage the cruise control, but on these occasions it seems there's problem causing the drivetrain or gearbox to decide there is some kind of problem, probably regarding torque delivery before the cruise control disengages. The engine wasn't heavily loaded or had been previously, just a gentle journey, so no high temperatures or engine stress involved. Limped home without switching off the engine (luckily, the stop/start didn't kick in when I had to stop). Will get it booked in to read the codes (my code reader won't read this car). Just been serviced. Latest software installed. Seems like a glitch somewhere between ECU and gearbox controllers.

@@JackRobinson63 It was a faulty HV battery control unit and two failed battery units. I had been complaining that there was a battery fault for over twelve months. The dealers first fix attempt was the usual firmware update, which, not surprisingly, had no effect whatsoever. I believe that the engine ECU and battery system were not working together correctly when you touched the brakes and the engine ECU decided to disable the HV powertrain. It is now fixed and the HV battery is supplying 18 miles coverage. It took 5 days to find, get warranty approval, get parts and do the fix though.
I just had this issue last night, haven't had it checked yet, but thinking it could be fuel pump related. I was going to a local theater and the car suddenly went into neutral as I pulled up with the drive train screen popping up. I'll come back to this as soon as I definitively know what happened though.
Could a shaky tensioner pulley be the reason for this to error to pop up???

Hi, I have this issue on my 2017 4 series gran coupe, the drivechain issue pops up intermittently when I am driving or driving off, I took it back to my car dealer as I have guarantee, they replaced the inlet manifold (they said it was clogged), however today I still have the same issue. Scanning the BMW reveals no related error codes at all. Can someone please advise? This car has been very problematic for me since buying it, the dealers have so far had to change the AMP, SOS battery and inlet manifold! its a 67 plate with 26k mileage.

I own a beamer exactly like yours. 116i, took my car in for service, dashboard has not been reset yet after service but the performance has somehow decrease, when i drive it hard the rev count just goes too high but doesn't push up speeds the way i normally know it. Do you think it is because there's no reset yet done to the car something else...?
I really like your presenting, and explanation but mostly I like how u r reassuring me cuz I thought I had a totally destroyed gearbox, I have a 640i gran coupe and I accelerator roughly to merge on highway and I got that warning plus "full performance not available". The symptoms I had were similar to rough changing of gears even when I put it on cruise control, it kept on changing gears (or at least felt like manual rough changing of gears).
I'll get it checked over the weekend but I really hope it is not the gearbox

It turns out that the engine air intake pipe had a crack somehow and when I accelerated the pressure broke a hole in the pipe. Naturally there wasn't enough air going into the engine so it had to shut off the full performance.
The part will take 3 weeks to arrive from Germany but I'm overjoyed that it has nothing to do with the gearbox or the engine itself
For those interested in how the crack started in the first place, a friend of mine told me he had a similar issue twice in the past 3 years so I guess it isn't that uncommon

Just had this in my Mini on startup. Its January and about -2. Very cold and frosty. Haven't driven my car for 5 days prior. Amber warning light comes up. I feared the worst. I sat in the car with the engine running allowing it the warm up. 5 mins later I turned the engine off and waited 2 minutes before restarting. No warning light this time. I drove around for a few miles before coming home. Car felt a bit sluggish but no cut outs and juddering. Hoping it's nothing serious.

Regarding smoke I checked my pcv valve and f20 118i with the N13 engine tends to smoke a bit at times. I took it to my mechanic and he can't find the issue. Is it normal for it to smoke like this or what could be the problem
I have a 2010 550i Gt and it’s doing the same thing. Except when I first turn it on it’s already shaking saying drivetrain malfunction. We’ve changed the spark plugs, coils and computer and the issue is still there. Any help ? Thank you !

Mine just lost performance and when I got out it smelt a bit eggy so thinking cat converter.

Hi I have had this now 3 times in 2 months, on my '18 X6 3.0 D. seems to happen more in comfort mode then in sport mode. also seems to happed when going up steep hills slowly transmission seems to get lost and try to downshift then upshift then I get the xdrive system error and it goes into limp mode which maxes our at like 12kph. if I shut off and restart in 5 min. its fine again. since its a diesel it can't be plugs or coil packs, fuel filter? I was thinking to upgrade the ECU software on the xdrive and transmission modules using eSys and see if there is any improvement. I will check the error codes next time as I just flashed the EVO head unit to add CarPlay and updated the maps also. any diesels with similar issues?

Got the error due to worn out clutch. Sports mode and launch control triggered the error. Driving in comfort and eco-pro are okay and no problem. Will be sorting out my clutch soon by bmw specialise garage.

Hello. I have a 116 sport 2011. Drivetrain warning pop up only when driving in rainy weather , car goes in safemode, lost power. Warning goes off after some minutes of stopping the engine, but re pop out if drive in rain again...

Had this on my bmw 440i after a couple launches, does it just mean it needs to cool down ?
I have e a f31 320i 2013 manuell gearbox. After driving on crusecontrol by low speed ( constand 60 miles / h) the Orange lights come on and message" reduced Engen power. Contact your dealer". After a couple days and several starts the problem dissapear for mabe a couple monts.. it happen onley on cruise , constand speed. So when the engine use low fuell and maybe pump fall asleep?
I have this issue now it’s not in limp mode just the warning message. The revs drop when I put my foot down. Also judders when coming to a stop
I have a 2018 530E and this drivetrain message comes up whenever I'm driving at a high speed and brake hard. The car always jolts when it happens, as if the brakes failed. The electric driving is disable after this and the message says I can continue to drive.
Then as you said, when the ignition is turned off and on, the error resets.
I just got the car second hand 2 months ago and the dealership checked and there were no errors. I wonder if anyone else experiences this? Also wondering if the hybrid recharging has anything to do with it.
My issues so far on my x4 bmw cutt off on me when I use my ac I was stuck in the middle of the street it was off for 16 mins then it started back up ...this was the second time my car has done this smhhh in the first time it said something differently like the fuel system..
but when I took it to the mechanic nothing came up on the diagnostic maybe thiers a particular scan will be needed because in georgia it's hard to get your vehicle serviced at the actual bmw dealership tho it takes months to get scheduled in ...but thanks for this video it gives me some hope ...I want ever purchase another bmw ever again 😫
Brilliant thanks buddy. Mines been on for about two years. Fault code said dpf. Cleaned and made no difference. Now and then it judders a bit on acceleration but overall ot drives absolutely fine. Not had any chance to have it looked at again. I did change the egr valve which seemed to help but the light stayed on. Occasionally it will be rough on idle but only when its a very hot day and it is rare. It is a 116d MSport 2013 F21... Any extra tips guys? I'm thinking it could be in need of a dpf as like Matt, i drive really easy. Are there any connectors which may be worth checking? I do know it had a minor bump before i got it
My mate had it with a failing alternator on his 3 series, which his mechanic sorted and _not_ the dealership like the iDrive screen insisted he visit!

I had the exact same thing happen to me yesterday, as soon as the turbo wants to come in the car goes into limp mode and the drivetrain warning comes up. I then checked the vacuum line that attaches to the engine cover and discovered that the hose had a small hole the in the size of a toothpick, right after where it attaches to to the engine cover.
After cutting the damaged part of the hose off, and reattaching it, the car was fine and the issue resolved.
That something so small can affect the car like that.😀

Did your car ever rev high from a cold start? I had the same issue as you but also the high revving on cold start.

My car got this Malfunction code for the Drivetrain ...2013 535xi ..Turned out to be the cartridge inside the oil filter was not replaced when they changed my oil..Got a new cap and cartridge for the filter..and that fixed the problem.
Great channel with great videos, I am having some issues you may help on based on your experience with this engine, I have the message of drivetrain malfunction, one coil pack was failing I got it replaced along with spark plugs, now same coil (new) failed again, replaced with a new one and also spark plug, but now cylinder is not working, I swap coils and failure still in the same cylinder, so all coils and spark plugs are working but no spark in that cylinder, do you think there is a DME issue or something else comes to mind?

Hi Matt. Thank you for all you do! SO helpful to all of us. My 2011 535i gave a drivetrain warning but no performance issues. Took it to the dealer after about 6 months of on and off warning messages. They replaced EPDW pressure converter/charging pressure actuator. At the same time found oil pan leak, rear differential bushing cracked so had all that done. Less than 3 months later the warning light appears again. Any ideas? THANK YOU!
You are in the same situation as me I have the same vehicle!! I had that pull up I figured the spark plugs needed to be replaced bc that’s one of issues that can arise they had never been changed the shop I took it too stripped 2 cyclinder heads brought it to another they were able to put helicoils in they said it was misfiring bc I needed a whole valve cover and I needed a ignition coil. They replaced two. Now I can’t even take the turn pike without it pulling up. I went to pass this person drunker than cooter brown going 35 in a 55 last night drive train pulled when I went to go the speed limit the whole car shook last night the whole way home.
I've just fitted a new catalyst to my m140i and now i have this same message pop up. How can the catalytic converter affect the drivetrain? Im confused. Have i caused this issue or is it purely a coincidence?
I got a error after getting a carwash drive control system malfunction drive moderately I turned the car off for 5 min and let it stay in sun should I check anything else?
great video,, bmw 5 series 2011 f10 , drivetrain light came on, car went into limp mode, restarted engine and car drove fine, I decided to fill up with some premium Texaco fuel instead of the cheap supermarket fuel that i had been using, the last 2 weeks the car has been fine, good fuel only in future for me, hope that fixed it

@@chewaynemcfarlane6409 sadly this did not fix it, I added some gwynnes fuel dry to a full tank of gas as i noticed the car was dropping revs in gear change (3rd), the car drove like a dog until i used up all that fuel,, when I refilled the car it drove great, i still get drivetrain warnings now and then but the car carries on driving great and the warning just goes away.. vehicle status shows no faults, I am thinking is this just a computer fault ??

I had a 2015 228i, I had to change my car because I needed more space, I’ve been looking for months and nothing good, so today I looked at the online inventory of a BMW dealership and found a 2013 528i which had all the features I was looking for, I went to the dealership drive tested it and everything fine so I proceded to closed the deal and while driving back home I got this message the exact same day I bought it, I feel bad, never had problems with previous car, stressing out…

My 530i was stuck in water for about 15 mins and it was pretty high and then I got that drive train malfunction hike my car was vibrating. It then went away and my car was still vibrating a bit and now my check engine light is on. I waited 4 more hours and the vibrations have stopped but my engine light is still on
I keep getting it every 5 minutes, says fault in drive, drivetrain error etc. All happened after I changed in part in the engine. Feels like the cars gone to waste
I had the same problem on my BMW X5 2008 model, just couldn’t work out why the DRIVETRAIN MALFUNCTION comes up on dashboard and car goes into limp mode, after managing to get my mate to inspect it thoroughly and connect diagnostic machine, found out today that the E CLUTCH is gone, which basically means I need to get new gearbox or recondition the old one, still drives perfect so going to make the most of it before it really breaks down lol 😂😎🦋🐝🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hi I. have 2008 bmw x5 3.0si and it shows malfuntion continu driving possible reduce acceilation ...and its very slowly speed up but gear shift easy still ..you had the same problem ? please let me know your condition what you knew about it .. not sure where to fix and what it is actually :(
I have bought the exact same car as you, great car but now I have DMU /ECU issues, had to pull it out and have it shipped to England for repair (i'm in Sydney). BMW quoted me AUD 5000.00 to replace vs self repair of AUD 1200.00. Yes I also had LIMP mode as a result of ECU crashing out.
Sorry to hear that. It is amazing how much it is to fix your issue over there. I remember about 15/16 years agao, when I was 21, I had a e38 740i and they antd £8000 for a tempory fix. please keep me up to date with your issue, and if the repair fixes it :)
@@mattsbeamer ECU is currently in shipping mode to England. Should get it back in around 3-4 weeks only. I will update you accordingly.
Update - got the rebuilt ECU back from England, installed it back into the BMW and started no problems. Just goes to show, patience does pay off.
I had this problem a few weeks ago and it was the high pressure fuel pump now I’ve just got another warning light up again I managed to get the error code witch is e1145c but the car dose still run but is just very sluggish until the turbo kicks in the car is a 65 plate 335d

I’ve been dealing with this issue for quite a while now which has led to $4,000 in repair this month alone :(( sadly I’ll be getting rid of my 328i because of it.
So sad to hear that your dealership couldn't sort it out the first time I hope it hasn't ruined the BMW brand for you. I hope what ever you drive next will be more reliable.

I've had my bmw 2014 116i sport for a couple of years now.
Almost like clock work, if i cold start my vehicle it high revs for about 10 seconds, then drives fine. If I drive the vehicle around and stop and start it a couple of times, again, like clockwork, the vehicle shows the drivetrain message when I pull away and the car shakes, cuts out but restarts itself (stop start engine)
I've had a high pressure fuel pump fitted, new spark plugs and coils. Can anyone help??
I have a 330e g20 got a drive train malfunction light. The car shut off automaticity (booth e drive and with fule) restart didn’t work. How I FIX it was BY going to settings and started the “check oil level” engine started and light went away” work normally now

Thanks a lot, great video. My X3 is having this issue, but the drive terrain warning comes only when I come to a stop and the auto start/stops the car and starts again, after this the warning goes off. If I turn auto start off it does not come. Can’t understand what the issue is.
I have this same issue! I turn off the auto stop and don't have the issue. My findings are it could be battery or spark plugs.
And wouldn’t a misfire throw an engine light ?
I keep getting reminder on dash with this error. No loss of power and car preformance ok. Rear end feels slippy over bumps. Prob shock. Had the timing chain and clutch done last month
@@underground_vibe0187 my codes got checked. Egr partially blocked and back pressure. Car still driving fine with fault. Guy recommended i get egr coded out and dpf removed
For me, when I start my G30 540i it cranks slow then revs a little by itself for a little. Followed by limp mode, stuck on 3rd gear (slow)
Exact same issue on my 545i 2004, today I went under and noticed oil leaks under the engine and I saw a bunch of wire connection (between the engine and gear box) being soaked with oil. Also my speedometer does not work
I ran the fuel low, after filling up the msg dissapeared happened last night? Hopefully doesn't come back? Will keep everyone updated!

My dpf was broken so had a mew one fitted but still have a drivetrain error. Could it be because the fault wasn’t cleared or would my car clear it itself? If the latter does this mean my car still needs to be fixed?
Hey, if the repair has been made, you are best off resetting the error, to see if it comes back. But before you delete it, just make sure that no other errors have popped up. I hope that made sense :)

Hello! I did reply the other day, but youtube didn't post my replies for some reason. I hopefully will do the coolant in a few months when the weather picks up. Some places say the coolant needs to be done every 30K or 2-3 years. Some last a lot longer.
@@mattsbeamer hi, mine never changed in 8 years and also it is time to change transmission oil. my mechanic says transmission oil cooler leakage into transmission oil is a common issue so it is better to change cooler before it leaks. because of this he advise me to change coolant, radiator and transmission oil at the same time. what's your opinion?
@@neizliyim Hey, I did make a video on when it would be a good time to change the ZF8 gearbox oil, I haven't made a DIY video thou. Changing it at the same time will most likely save you money in the long run. The cooling system on BMW in general isn't their strong point.

Hi matt. I have exactly the same car as you. I had my water pump changed on the turbo a year ago and about 3 months ago I have been getting low coolant messages. Had a pressure test done by garage and they said there was a little coolant loss but only to fill a void (not sure they knew the real reason). Since then I have had the dreaded drive train message saying "continue the journey at a moderate speed. full performance not available. Have the problem checked by service". Been monitoring coolant level and it keeps dropping very very slowly but no sign of any external leaks. Car seems to drive as normal.
Hey, Liam, sorry to see you have got a coolant issue. If they could tell there was a slight coolant loss, couldn't they tell where it was going? I am guessing you had this error in the past, when you had a faulty water pump on the turbo. Did it give the message saying that there was a blockage?
Have any fault codes come up on their system? :)
@@mattsbeamer They could tell there was a coolant loss just that it 'filled a void in the system'. I had a slightly different message with the water pump issue. i didn't have a message saying there was a blockage, just the standard drive train message. I am taking it back into the garage tomorrow to hopefully find some answers, just praying its not internal.
@@Liam-oh1jf Hi Liam I hope your car is well. I had (kind of) the same issue. For me it was the auxiliary (secondary) waterpump on the turbo was leaking. Which resulted in triggering a pressure sensor and cutting off the turbo due to low pressure. After replacing the waterpump (170 EUR) it is fixed. The error message only showed when > 3500RPM and more than half amount of throttle. Hope this helps.
@@roymeinders5877 @matts beamer Cheers Roy. Unfortunately it is bad news. Garage phoned me up and said they have found the possible culprit to the leak. It was coming from the back of the engine, so I thought ok, not too bad, possibly just the sensor that sits back there as this is a known part to leak from. But no, they ran a pressure test and found the leak was coming from the outlet system that sits at the back of the engine and that it is impossible to get to unless the gear box is removed. The part is only around £45 but the labour is probably going to cost an arm and a leg considering I am now out of warranty. I did notice a loss in coolant at the end of last year when I was still in warranty but the garage was unable to find any possible leaks and just put it down to 'a void that was filled within the system' after running the first pressure test. Now I have taken it back out of warranty as it was still losing coolant and suddenly they have found the leak so therefore all costs will not be under warranty. If they just checked a little further in the first place I wouldn't be having this problem and it would just be fixed under warranty. Not a happy bunny :(
@@roymeinders5877 Hi mate, I had the drive train issue but no power restriction or anything just a message and scanned it but no fault code came up. I looked online and said it was the auxiliary pump so I’ve ordered that. However, when I got the codes read I had nothing show up but cleared them anyway, the drivetrain issue isn’t showing up anymore. I’ve ordered the part from Bmw do you think it’s still worth changing? Has the same drivetrain malfunction error. I very low on fuel once I filled it up it’s running fine. No check engine light.
I drive BMW x3 2011 model. I got this message a month or so ago. I have been told by BMW Service I need to replace EGR valve actuator, I needed to replace EGR Valve costing A$750.
Mine started playing up differently, if I put my foot down there would be a lack of power then it would over rev, then the error came up
Saw now I filled my car up and error came up. Limp mode also. Switched off car for 5min and error is gone. Thanks bud
BMW just recalled the high pressure fuel pump - would this be a cause for the drivetrain malfunction?
I believe it is one of the reason the drive train light can appear :) I need to see if BMW RU have this recall. Thanks for telling me.
I have an F150 that uses low octane gas, and a 750. I’ve had the 750 for 3 years and for the first time I pumped low octane into the BMW. Within an hour I got the drive train alarm and the engine vibrates while idling, poor acceleration. I suspected it was the fuel, so I drove it at low speeds to empty the tank. Filled with high octane, car runs fine, but the alarm won’t clear.
Hey, I’d love a 750i, wonderful cars. When my F20 got to low on fuel (so dirty), the error kept popping up after a few tanks then it disappeared. Hopefully it will be the same for you. Good luck.
Very good video, i also have this drivetrain error only when i start the car and immediatly drive, if i put the ignition on , disable start stop and after start the car and wait about 3-4-5 minute, then everything it’s ok, i’m doing this thing and for about 8-9 days the error don’t appear, beflre that i went to a garage they put the test and tell me to change the battery , and the fuel pump... changed and the error still appear, now i do this trick that i said earlier and god help me to not appear anymore, if error pop up again i will go to bmw to put their test on and check.

This can also be a timing chain issue a super expensive issue

Hi replaced timming chain car start n drvi fine but msg keep coming back
i have 2017 330i. Today had oil changed. All was good... I reset the change oil warning light. Then, I pulled off drove about 3 miles then the Red Stop motor light comes on. I take it back to oil change shop, they pulled new filter and re-seated it. Car is at idle then the Drivetrain: Powertrain CONT. yellow came on. WTF is going on. Anyone has any ideas or specific knowledge please I am asking for any help or info. I just dropped 2k on the coolant pump in January 2022. No way I have this kind of money to drop into shop for repairs.

I have a F11 535d xdrive and i get the drivetrain error coming and going, it never stays on for more than few minutes, but appears always when i take off with cold engine and reach 45-50kmh, it goes away usually in few minutes. Later it comes on when going uphill and dissapears again when load is not so high, sometimes it comes on 2-3 times when going up a long hill. There is no misfires or anything unusual with the engine, it just takes the power down and it's really frustrating when overtaking cars etc. Im guessing some sensor or actuator perhaps? I have all the injectors refurbished and overall a very good condition engine (Was rebuilt after chain detonation). DPF and EGR are removed and deactivated properly, it has stage 2 remap and pulls like a train but could it be the turbo starting to go out?
Did you manage to fix this, i have the exact same issue on a 740d. Any help would be appreciated
Thanks man I drive a 750li 2014 I let my fuel get really low and started it up for the day then message came up and a studder was happening so I turned the car off immediately and turn it back on an shaking was gone but message was still there i drove it to see if anything was wrong and it was completely fine this my first day dealing with it so ima drive it today and see if messages still pop up with car tank on full ..thanks again

Hi Gary, on my car, it cleared itself after running a fuel fresh tanks of fuel through the system :)
I picked up a 2017 340i with under 25,000 km on the engine. I've received the error message twice now, but with a simple restart the message seems to go away. It was roughly a week before the message popped up a second time. I also live in pretty cold climates so I'm hoping that it's just the battery needing to warm up. Do you suggest I take the car in to get diagnosed?
Hey, sorry for the reply :) if you just bought the car, it maybe worth pulling over (in a safe place) and recording the evidence that you have this message, and showing that it disappears when you restart it. It will be worth scanning it. I need to make a video on how to check the codes that save into the cars memory :)

“Ultimate driving machines” should drive the way you want it to drive. Slow fast whatever… Same issue on my 2017 650i xdrive. Has only 40k miles. Took it into BMW, they replaced all the coolant lines. Error occurred again less then one week after having my car back.
a $110,000 car should not have major mechanical issues with so little miles.
I have a mini cooper and this happened to me today. Drivetrain error came up and car went into limp mode...very rough..significant loss of power. Managed to get home...car going to mini dealer tomorrow.

I have had this Drivetrain warning happen on my 2018 330e three times. All of it occurred when it was raining. BMW said it was the battery. I don't think they were right. It happened again. :(
I'm having an issue where my 530i 2013 (N53 Engine) runs smoothly but won't engage in gears... to elaborate, when I try to shift to D or R or N it will go back to P instantly after releasing break, and after a few tries it will just stick to P. No error codes on my scanner, will try my friend's scanner tool and see if it shows something. Any ideas how to fix it?
Hello, has your car got a good batteries. One of the most common reasons is due to a bad battery. :)
My issue is very similar. It’s been a couple of months now since the engine light has come on and it has not gone away.
My 330e sometimes would start in electric mode but once it goes into petrol mode, it won’t switch back into electric mode until I start the car engine again.
Only once or twice I had the issue where my 330e would not change gear at all and I had to restart the engine and it was fine since.
Also when going downhill my car wouldn’t change to a lower gear.
Any idea what could be wrong?

hi, Matt, i have a 218d automatic, this drivetrain malfunction appears all the time when i start off the engine. the sysmtoms: i could not speed up as quick as before, and it's hard to reach 70/80miles/hour. and it takes longer time to gear up(auto). could you explain what's the reason behind? thanks
I have the same problem but BMW can't see car for one week, and no loaner!!! Did you drive it around like this until it was fixed?
Recently I have same error "Drivetrain". My car is BMW 530e iPerformance (Dec. 2017). I stop now driving car and investigating the problem. Do you have any advice?
Sorry to hear about your problem. This error can mean absolutely anything :) Mine was due to letting my petrol get so low, and it picked up a bit of dirt. Best to get her scanned.
I guess since your car is a hybrid, you have extra possibilities. I will need to look into hybrids and learn what can cause it. Good luck
Mine came up. When changing to second. Then when turned off car. Went away . Not come back
Coil packs don't work in the same way as spark plugs.
