FILM DESCRIPTION:
Impressed by high school student David's (Tobey Maguire) devotion to a 1950s family TV show, a mysterious television repairman (Don Knotts) provides him with a means to escape into the black-and-white program with his sister, Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon). While David initially takes to the simplistic, corny world of the show, Jennifer sets about jolting the characters with doses of reality that unexpectedly bring a little color into their drab existence.

Pleasantville was one of Tobey’s earlier films, it was when I first saw him. And Reese Witherspoon was still hot as foqq in this film, not that she isn’t now, but naughty girl playing at fifties conservatism- 🔥🔥 Plus she in the end goes to university inside the Pleasantville world- really something I always wondered about how Jennifer got along inside that parallel reality afterwards. 🎉🎉
The way Peter Parker yelled FIRE made me laugh too hard 🤣🤣

I’ve loved this film for years and I’ve only just noticed that the firemen have photos of all the cats they have rescued from trees on the wall behind Tobey!
If I could add anything to this scene, it'd be to give Tobey his own quote as he gazes upon his adoring fans: "They love me. :)"

This scene has lived in my head rent free for YEARS and I recently came upon a video review of the movie, and when they explained this scene I went "OH MY GOD THIS IS THE FIRE CAT SCENE" way too excitedly.

Alright, for those who want a quick rundown of what this movie is about, ok peep game.. so homie Toby and sistah Reese with her spoon are siblings that are polar opposite of eachother when it comes to characteristics, Toby the nerdy type and Reese as the borderline emo punk rock type and they tend to feud alot- following me so far?? Ok, Cool... so things took a strange turn when one of their typical arguments caused them to break a remote to the TV- they call tv repair man but instead was interrupted by a knock on door from an repair man (like how tf dude already know right?... just u wait).. this repair man ain't no ordinary Fix-it-felix fella, this dude offers them a "unique" remote after bud (tobes') answered a few Easter egg questions from a classic TV show that he loves, the repair man man man took interest into bud so much so that he then gave the....."unique" remote. After the repair man left, the siblings THEN fight over the remote (I'm talking some petty tug-o-war action) in which from doing so they end up being transported INTO the show as the main siblings characters from the show (like whaaaaat, kablam 🤯) so NOW they must try n figure out how to get out of there before mama dukes come home after her date while also having Ree-Ree trying to play her "role" in this world of 1950s black n white sitcom ( ha, wait til you find out what's at the end of elm Street and main street 😏, no not freddy Krueger- whatsdamatta with ya 😒), also things gets interesting in this sitcom world that changes not only the lives of the siblings but also everyone and EVERYTHING else (if this was to come out now, I PROMISE it would be branded as "woke" by politicsssss folk 😒)... soooooooo check it out 😌

Of course, this scene could never have happened as it did. In order to make that old 1952 Seagrave fire engine spray that water, 'Bud' would have first had to engage the PTO from inside the cab. Then, if any you ever noticed all those shiny knobs on side of a firetruck next to the cab, he would have to pull a big lever to engage the tank to pump. Then he would have to throttle up the engine to make the pump get the pressure it needs as they work off the engine speed. He would then have to regulate the pressure from the suction side to the discharge side with the relief valve to get the proper PSI. Only then would the nozzle spray water. Especially with that kind of force.
Here, they just hopped out of the truck, he grabbed the hose, pulled the lever on the nozzle and it worked. That would be impossible! LOL
They got sucked I to a T.V. Show that would be impossible to begin with, so anything can happen.

I mean, nothing burned, it didn't rain and the temperature stayed the same! LOL It's just that I'm an antique car and truck guy so its something I noticed right away! 😁

This tree catching on fire is a blatant deus ex machina; there is no explanation for how or why that tree just spontaneously combusted. However, no one appears to care because the sequence of David trying to recruit the dopey firemen is hilarious.

It's both symbolism and supernatural. The burning tree represents the burning bush, and the tree caught fire, because the mom from Pleasantville masturbated in a family friendly sitcom. Something that wasn't supposed to happen and the world literally reacted "WTF!?" in it's own way.

This is one of my favorite movies because there is SO much going on from both a social and psychological perspective. And in the end, many lessons are learned.

@@puterboy2 The entire movie was filmed in color. Then, they scanned it, processed it and digitally recorded it. Then they selectively de-saturated the color film, and digitally adjusted the contrast. Pleasantville remains to this very day the movie with the most computer generated effects in a film. It was quite a feat for the 1990's too!
