It is a very democratic system for a theocracy. There is more democracy in Iran than in any Christian organization. The pope is voted by cardinals, which vote for new cardinals themselves. In Iran, the ayatollah is voted by clerics which is 50% voted by the representatives of the people. Edit: it’s also important to note that they had a king before this with no democracy whatsoever.
