- "Tuning Up" by Toshiko Akiyoshi as performed by the Toshiko Akiyoshi-Lew Tabackin Big Band on Road Time.
I apologize for the song stopping just short of the ending. There was a malfunction with the conversion process from vinyl to digital. It is missing the last sixteen measures approximately.
I do not own the rights to this piece, arrangement, recording or anything related. I just wanted to share this recording with those who do not readily have access to
I am forever grateful to my high school band director for introducing us to this album! Sumovdabest!
Late to the comments here. We played this at a few competitions and messed up the judges every time at the start! Was fun to hear the taped judges comments opening with the sound of us already playing and "ok- ya got me!!"....we 'tuned up' a bit longer to really sell it and then bam! 😀 echoing comments about thanking our music directors for exposing us to such awesome music as high school kids in the 70's 🎶
The album IS on CD, but its only available in Japan. My wife got a copy via Amazon, but brace yourself...it was $45!! Worth every penny, if you ask me, but her eyeballs popped!
the transition into the first solo is so groovy‼️
We played this in college in the mid-80s, love it!
My college professor insisted we listen to this song as a modern big band, fantastic. DeAnza College.
Got to play the Bass Trombone part in the Millikin University Jazz Band. Loads of fun!
one of my absolute favourites in the 70's so glad to have found it!
Great second set opener in college. People thought we were fooling around in the intro
This is a fantastic song; it's a shame it's not available on iTunes.
That tenor sax so crisp.
Lew Tabackin !
I've said this before.
I got this vinyl at a book fair almost without clue about the record. I just saw "Lew Tabackin" written on the cover and I said "That's it, I gotta buy this." How did I find about Lew Tabackin? because of the book of jazz, which I got from a flea market...
Ye, life is amazing when that kind of things happen. Thanks god, for jazz.
We are playing this song in the Blue Lake International Jazz Band this summer and I love it!
My high school jazz band played this at a jazz competition at Notre Dame and blew the house down! Love this tune! We highlighted several musicians with solos, our bass player, a trumpet, a trombone and myself on baritone sax (bass clarinet during the woodwind segment). The BEST ever!!
WOW.....an actual live performance that hasn't been tampered with much. Such a rare--and much appreciated-- listening experience!
... bestes Stück von allen für mich. EIN Paradestück für Bassposaunisten ...
WISH they would re-produce this in CD and Vinyl !!!
Thank you very much for uploading this outstanding recording. This is Toshiko A. big band at it's best...uploading the cut "Road Time Shuffle" would be a great treat for all, please do it, thank you.
My friend, Tom Peterson, plays the first tenor solo.
That's a grreat solo man.....
Yo!
★何十年ぶりに聴いたろう‥。懐かし!

これ、石丸電気2号店で買った。しかも輸入盤でした。
Phil Teele's Bass-Trombone!!
Thank you for sharing!
These men are absolute masters of the art of jazz.
Was Lew Tabakin the second tenor solo? Unreal.
I remember my college jazz band playing this in the 80s but can't find a recording anywhere
Finally found an original vinyl for sale.
Happy now! 🤗
My student will be playing Lead Trumpet with that group:)
Top!
The one that is playing this song... I believe his folder is marked "Orchestra."
Pretty sure this is recorded with one of the channels at a much higher volume than the other. The mix of left to right sounds very different on the album.
Steve Huffsteter trumpet solo 7:33 :) Nice!

Who is playing the excellent trombone solo?
Bill Reichenbach, I think.
+Samiam 666 yes that's who it is my band director had this album on the LP
So did mine : )
A few years ago I bought the album and had it converted online by a company that specializes in this.
You should post it.
大好きな曲なのに...さ、最後が切れている。あと1秒欲しかった。
Anyone know who played the alto solo starting at 5:14? Great solo!
Looking at the vinyl credits it's either Dick Spencer or Gary Foster
Dick Spencer 1st Alto.
Gary Foster 1st Tenor

6 people need new reeds.
2:39 I am dissatisfied by the second trombone
I play second trombone on this song in my jazz band and I hate playing a D natural on the E flat 7 chord. It just feels wrong
@@nathanzahm1845 ... gut gekontert, verdammt schwieriger Part auch für mich an der Bassposaune. ORIGINAL-Part für mich ist von N. KNEPPER glaube ich. Schallplatten sind im Keller. Leider.
