Thanks once again for all the manga and film recs! I’ll do my best to seek them down and hunt them out ;)
Hey, I saw someone recommend getting candy man to eat Japanese candy and just wanted to recommend getting Mushroom mountain on the episode if u can, it's like mushroom looking cookies with chocolate heads.
Also the ramen/shushi man would be cool and less awkward.

He should eat more than just Asian candies. Candies from all over the world.
@@diamondsword7972 Yeah true, I definitely agree with that.
Most japanese candies are bean based and/or have too little sugar, if any at all. Even the japanese hate their own candy, and now you want ER to taste them for an hour? Sir... You are a wicked man...

If you wanna get into japanese cinema, I'd recommend the filmography of either Takeshi Kitano (Hanabi, Sonatine, ...) or Kore-eda Hirokazu (Nobody Knows, Shoplifters, ...). Both of them made movies filled with emotions and are good pictures of the modern japanese society, with style and point of view you really can't find anywhere else. It's also relatively easy to access in the West since they made some waves in famous festivals.
Saw Takeshi Kitano and I immediately thought of MXC
@@williamkensington2772 Yeah this guy had a very unique career that's for sure
Regarding your use of the word "superficial" at around 2:40, I hope you don't think that just because it may not be as ravenous as some people can be, that your appreciation for Japanese culture and art isn't as legitimate or valid as the next person's. Seems like you were just trying to make it clear that you're not an expert - which is of course fine - but yeah, your love of it is just as real as anyone else's.
And you're a man of taste from what I can see too!
It want so much that I’m not an expert than it is that there’s more to Japan and it’s people than this stuff.

I just started watching the video but I’m so happy to see other people talking about tekkonkinkreet! it’s one of my all time favourite movies, I swear I cry everytime I watch it :’)
I moved from Minnesota to Japan in 2016 and haven’t regretted it. It is such an amazing country, with great people and culture.
Keep doing what you’re doing ER, I love your videos!
I've always had a fascination in the Japanese Culture for a very long time. This led to me discovering anime (and eventually the cultured side of that), and now I'm studying the Japanese language. I wish you luck in your travel through one of my favorite cultures, lands, and people!
I lived in South Korea in 1978-79 when I was in the army. I fell in love with the people in the little village outside Camp Humphreys main gate. They have picnics by their relatives' graves and sit food on the mound for them. The artistry and originality were so refreshing, but the poverty I saw in this little village and the death rate for children was heartwrenching. Thank you for your originality and artistry. So much fun.
❤Your channel is literally my comfort place. You make me so happy. Love you❤
I’m planning on moving to japan for a year in 2023. Can’t wait. Been learning the language on and off for years but living there will really up my game.

Knowing how difficult it is to get permanent residence - or even temporary residence - do you have your housing and job all situated?
Good luck about the language part. It's not that hard. You can do it!

The OG Asmrtist is back again
Ive been watching you for years. So glad to see you embracing anime, manga, etc. I have tried to explain to others why i watch anime more than anything else growing up. Idk about u but i find anime touches on topics otherwise not seen so much in American cartoons. Such as suicide, loss of a parent, bullying, growing pains, etc. The way they bring up these kinda of topics and just the way they give u a different perspective on such things is why ive always been drawn to anime over conventional cartoons. I hope you keep exploring it! On a lighter note i find the jokes really slap as well. Haha
Couple days ago I was watching your video about manga...And by strange coincidence, I have found Uzumaki manga laying on the shelf in the little guesthouse I am staying right now. The same edition as you had in your video! I have started reading it today, and couldn't put it down. So excited for it!
I used to hate the thought of having sushi until just a few years when my wife forced me to try some. Now I live for it! Favourites are tempura and classic salmon with avocado.
Ayyy there you go. Sushi is awesome
I don't think it's superficial at all Rift. I'm the same as you, I've been to a lot of places but never Japan. Yet Japan has my favorite culture other than my own. I feel connected to them through the various media that I've consumed, which has made my life so much better.
Yeaaaas! Really loved this!🥰🍣

Man i really love those kind of videos thank you! Can't wait for more manga stuff!
Really appreciate videos like this. :)
My family and I love sushi, so it kinda sucks how expensive it can get 😂 Watching this video (at age 24) made think of all the Japanese products influences I have: my PlayStations, DS/3DS, GBA SP (and all the games for the systems), my manga collection and art books, my shirts, my toys/collectibles, and more! I’m the only person in my household who likes this type of culture in such a manner, which kinda stunk growing up cause my brother liked Pokémon and that was it. It’s still a huge part of who I am today, and it was nice to see someone else with the same passion. Take care, and I’ll see you in the next video ER! 💚

Ive been to Japan twice, each for a month, and plan on going again once the pandemic is over. Its such a beautiful country, and i didnt have a single bad meal. Even their 7-11's have good food. It truly lived up to the hype
its so cool hearing about your kid years and recognising old ass games I've only heard of on youtube like Space Ace! You are a very likable person Paul-san.
Spirited Away is such a classic, and Japanese culture is so intriguing and interesting, and really is incorporated into a lot of modern lives.
Er, my favourite oral essay channel.
I love how well spoken and self critical you're about your interests. The fact that you understand it's still rather "superficial" despite having been interested in it for awhile already. I also like to think that way.
If you're reading here's some obvious and less obvious recommendations of Japanese movies. Directors: Akira Kurosawa, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Imamura, Ozu, Miike, Koreeda and Mizoguchi. Then individual films: Funeral Parade of Roses (experimental LGBTQ masterpiece), Onibaba (horror), Woman in the Dunes and The Face of Another (better go in blind), Harakiri (Kobayashi in general actually).
I like that you love my home country's culture ER!
I just started learning how to speak Japanese so this is a pleasure
Watched Spirited Away for the first time the other day. Damn it was amazing, loved the music
We vacationed in Tokyo, Japan a couple of years back and it was the one place we visited that we actually didn't want to leave! If you ever get a chance to visit, you would love it, E!
Cool vid, ER! I have very, very little familiarity with anime and manga, but I am a fan of Hayao Miyazaki's, Akira Kurosawa's, Takashi Miike's, and Junji Ito's stuff.
Is it me or does Rift literally seem like such a humble down to earth guy??
If you're interested in Japanese culture, Ghost of Tsushima is a good game for the PS4 that I genuinely enjoyed
It’s 1am and I’m craving sushi so bad it’s legit amazing the raw fish tastes just as good or even better then cooked fish!!!
You my friend have made me wanna go try sushi for the first time
There's so many films I could recommend, but if I had to pick one it would be "Like Father, Like Son" by Hirokazu Kore-eda. It's a fairly recent film a great depiction of modern Japan, on top of being a cinematic masterpiece.
For manga, you seem to have enough on your plate already but I think you would really enjoy "Monster" by Naoki Urasawa.
I look forward to hearing you talk about Japan again in the future :)
ER, I suggest you watch the movie Adrift in Tokyo. It shows a pretty realistic take on the atmosphere of the city. It is a walk film and the writing is pretty good
Idk why I am so entertained by this

This man created this video after he discovered Hentai.
I lived in Hawaii for ten years and met so many Japanese people there. Really nice people. I started learning simple phrases and sentences to go shopping and restaurants. It's probably one of the easier Asian languages to learn compared to the sounds and pronunciation of the others.

Awesome. They remade star blazers not too long ago. It's really good and might be fun to check out if you enjoyed the original.
I swear, sometimes it just feels like different phases of Rift when he has different haircuts, but we love him every time.
Also if you do like Gundam anime/manga, I would highly recommend Gurren Lagann. It has got to be, in my opinion, the greatest anime experience I have ever had.
Fun fact: Sticking your chopsticks vertical in a bowl of rice is bad in Japan. Called tsukitate-bashi (突き立て箸), it is incredibly taboo because it reminds Japanese people of funerals, where a bowl of rice is left with two chopsticks standing vertically in the center. It's also supposed to bring bad luck
^This.
I've never been to the mainland, but I've been told if you need to put your chopsticks down, set them flat on the side of your dish. It's far more polite and won't upset the locals.
I almost did this once and then I got that look that just said "don't" from my step dad
About 2 months later, I found out why
