Metal School - Ratt

- Unfortunately, CZcams made me cut this one to pieces, so I apologize for any weird edits. I figured I'd try to salvage what I could. Still a fun video though and a good reminder to listen to some Ratt!
As one of the big LA metal bands along with Quiet Riot and Motley Crue, Ratt had a run of four platinum albums in the '80s, before succumbing to pretty much every '80s metal cliche out there. But this video is mainly about the music, the albums, and the videos (as much as possible anyway) and taking a look at a band that is absolutely more than the sum of its parts. With the main lineup of Stephen Pearcy, Robbin Crosby, Warren DeMartini, Juan Croucier, and Bobby Blotzer, Ratt would reach international headliner status and crank out more great songs than you might expect or remember. Check it out and let me know what your favorite Ratt tracks are!

Younger fans will never understand how HUGE Ratt was during their prime.
I understand completely... but hey I’m a gen y - melenial stuck in the body of a gen z, so I won’t complain I was brought up on Queen, CCR and The Who so I was already predisposed to liking these competently written masterpieces.
Teach them
I hated glam rock back in the 80's. Now I can appreciate it for the musical masterpieces they are. Especially given the new digital age where most pop artist are no longer needing talent more so than a pretty face and autotune.
I’m 23 and I fuckin love this band there way better then Guns N’ Roses
@@isaisanchez3038 your parents taught you well! 🤘🏽☠️🤘🏽
Ratt was one of the best 80s bands.
“Hard rock” bands*
@@stfu699 In my opinion, "heavy rock" is more like it.
Ratt was one of the best glam metal bands
I've never been to the US and was born in late 80s but Ratt's music is SOOO good that I feel like missing Ratt must be a federal crime if you have tolerance to a heavy music.
In early 2010s I discovered them starting with Detonator but it was only the beginning...
They suck. Way to commercial.
Warren DeMartini's guitar sound was so iconic for 80's metal
Fun Fact:
Warren recorded many of his solos on both Out of The Cellar and Invasion of Your Privacy with a tiny silver-face Fender Champ Amp! You can hear the little thing buzzing around on the floor of the isolation booth on his solo on The Morning After! Check it out!
Guitar God
Rob ..... sorry ( Robbin and warren) They both were iconic guitar duo of the 80's and their guitar sound was so iconic too.
@@shamifasahat992 The American terror twins, if you will
@@shamifasahat992 very true but Warren proved to have it in his blood. Robbin fell off after he caught the bug. Which is understandable.
Warren was one of those extreme natural talents that popped up in the 80's. Such a wonderkid.
WARREN IS A GUITAR 🎸 GOD. miss those care free days of being a teen 16 in 1984, when out of the Cellar came out. Seems like yesterday where does the time go😮. Peace.........
I love this band!
Me too, The gang were kickass, and that’s that.
LIKEWISE! Ratt will ALWAYS BE ONE OF MY FAVORITES!
Ratt will always be my favorite...
better than motley crue
If you love Ratt you obviously don't care what others say.
Some of the best times of my life when listening to Ratt in the 80's. Good times. Great video.
exact same!
Of all the bands I listen to, RATT has the highest percentage of songs I can listen to, they've always been very high on my list of what I listen to. 80's upbeat Rock
Agree..that´s why i listen too....
Warren DeMartini is amazing
Not many hair Metal bands still get my eartime, especially with so much heavier stuff out there, but Dokken & Ratt always will. Thanks for highlighting DeMartini’s amazing talent!
I seen Dokken 12 time I seen Ratt once Bobby was only cool one to fans in 90s
Ratt and Dokken are easily the best bands from the 80's. Both bands music has aged very well. I love all of Ratt's albums, but the first two Out Of The Cellar and Invasion Of Your Privacy are MASTERPIECES to me.
Dancing Undercover Was Also A Killer Album!
Agree
Cinderella are top of the heap of 80s glam bands followed closely by warrant. 😊
@@XBLxMaverickX and don't forget about reach for the sky.... NOT😂
Definitely my favorite as well!
The guitar solo from the beginning of "Lay it down" is straight up iconic ".. 🤘 Dam those were the days! The Drive in', good friends, cute rocker dudes, lot's of beer, and Ratt... 💪🏻🤘❤️
Robbin Crosby played a fair amount of lead guitar with Ratt, particularly on the EP and the first two albums.
Robbin was a good guitarist and had more of a "bluesy" style and was a good songwriter.. The further Robbin got from the songwriting and album participation, the less the albums sold!
Dancing Undercover is seriously underrated. It’s a great album, start to finish.
There are a couple fillers but overall great, especially one good lover
@@patriotide8750that album rocked, One good lover was my favorite as well, with slip of the lip and 7th avenue. Ratt was my favorite band of that era. It all started with out of the Cellar I was 16 in highschool, seems like yesterday. Warren is a guitar god. Where does the time go😮
I still have my RATT N ROLL bandana.
The 80s were so great, it's too bad a time like that will never return. Watching cool videos like this takes my mind off of a lot of crap that is considered current events.
Warrens tone was just a humbucker strat through a marshall and a chorus pedal....nothing mysterious. Its his PLAYING that kicks ass !
and a slapback delay through the board
I saw Ratt countless times in the 80’s. One of the best live bands ever!!!!
Ratt & Roll!!!
Lucky you. I saw them once in mid 1989 which was my HS Sr year. I don’t really remember it sad to say.
I’ve been looking at past concert maps of Ratt and there were other nearby chances but for whatever reason didn’t know or go. I ones I missed out on in 1985 make me want to punch myself in the nuts over and over again.
This should have been titled “Rattrospective”

Edit 2: 100 likes thnx a lot.
Ha!!! Good one!!
That would be a great name for their next album or a greatest hits release
RIP Tawny Kitean. 🙏
A long time coming, Metal School needs to do more glam metal bands videos, Dokken especially!
The EP and the 1st 3 are the best
Guys here’s the link between Ratt and Dokken - Juan Croucier is Dokken’s og bassist and has a credit on live to rock - rock to live track 5 on “Breaking the chains”
Agree 💯
I loved Dokken as a teenager.
Dokken isn't glam
Nitro 🤘🏻
This music brings back so many great memories.
Out of all the LA bands, Ratt is far too underrated. They should be out touring on the Motley Crue, Def Leppard Stadium Tour. It’s unfortunate they weren’t able to hang onto the stature they built up in the 80’s. Stephen’s recent solo work is very close to Ratt. But I’d love to see these guys reunite the original line up. I just did a Ratt Album Ranking and for me their best album is Detonator. But that’s just my opinion.
Ratt is great but there is only 2 original guys left thats the problem
They always stood out from the rest or the hair metal bands to me
They Can't Have An Original Lineup Reunion Due 2 The Death Of Bassist Robbin Crosby
@@dukehalliday9833 Bassist is Juan Croucier. Robin was the rhythm guitarist.
FAR FAR too underrated. I listen to the songs now and have a greater appreciation for them. I would say as a group from that era that had more good/great songs than any other one group.
I think Detonator is underrated. Yeah, it's more commercial than previous efforts, and Desmond Child's fingerprints are all over it, but honestly I think the songs are solid. "Shame Shame Shame" was a killer opening to the album, and a good choice for a single, to show they hadn't lost their edge.
Definitely
Love you bro
Heads I Win, Tails You Lose is a fun song
Always liked Ratt, they had a lot more substance to them then most of the hair bands. Robbin and Warren both had aggressive and distinguished guitar tones and playing.
Torch & King, the American Terror twins 🤣😆😉😏🤘
Facts!
One of my favorite things about Ratt is that they never succumbed to the lame ballad formula that plagued 80’s hard rock.
Yes they were if not mistaken the only big hair band who did not do that but they did ballads yrs later n turned out be timeless ballads (giving yourself away & 1 step in early 90s.)
Thank goodness!
Them and I believe Dokken too.
@@andrewvanhalen1984 Alone Again was Dokken's top charting song.
as someone who was born in the 2000s, you’re channel is such a godsend for someone who wants to put names and faces to the music i love!!
thanks for another amazing class :] ratt’s one of my faves, i just never got into the lore before
"Nobody Rides for Free" is such a great great song
My favorite hair band of the 80's behind Motley Crue. They were also my first concert at 13. I attended another of their concerts that filmed "Slip of the Lip." Lots of memories.
Warren is the most underrated Guitar player of the 80’s!
Robin really was a huge part of rat being cool and selling millions of albums
21:43 - "I've talked a lot about Warren, but that's not to take anything away from Robbin. Not only was Robbin the leader of the band but so clearly the heart & soul of it as well, even if he wasn't the technical virtuoso that Warren came to be." Oh, right on!! Robbin WAS the heart and soul of Ratt. Well said, Mr. Metal Skool Guy.
DeMartini provided the best concert experience in my life. Saw them at the old Alladin in Vegas with Lita Ford opening. This kid was so tweaked out. It was beyond insane. He went off!!! I will never forgot it. Thankyou Warren.
Cool. Which year was that?
Ratt is one of those bands where going through the entire history is warranted. For reasons I don't quite understand, normies only seem to listen to the two first records, but their entire output with Robbin as well as the Infestation record is well worth owning for any classic hard rock or heavy metal fan.
Totally agree! I hadn’t revisited Reach for the Sky or Detonator in a while and they held up better than I’d remembered.
Agreed, I’m a fan of pretty much everything they’ve put out.
I have 3 rock tees. The Cars. ZZ Top. And RATT.
@Lungho To me there are two modifiers to this. I don't think that the metal aspect of Ratt ever receded entirely, but rather that it was complemented by a bluesier approach over time. Way Cool Jr. wouldn't have worked on one of the first two albums, but it works like a charm on Reach for the Sky. As far as Detonator goes, it is very different from the other ones, and I can see people not liking that style, but for what it is I think it is a great album, and it might actually be the one I reach for the most these days. Warren's tone on the album, I can say without doubt, is one of my all-time favourites, equalled in that era only by George Lynch on Wicked Sensation.
@@kospandx Yep, and Oni Logan is a great vocalist... that and Street Fighting man are killer tracks. And I gotta this theory that “Way Cool Jr.” might be about Robbin, but I could just as easily been about Torch so....
I went to a RATT concert back in 1984 with some friends. We didn't have tickets so we hung around outside the back doors of the coliseum waiting to get let in. The doors came open and in ran several people but I didn't make it before security closed them again. I wandered around outside listening to the opening band play through the walls when I came upon a row of windows that were dark and just above my head. I jumped up and down several times and saw the members of RATT hanging out waiting to take the stage. I tried my damnedest to get their attention but they never heard or saw me. I spent the rest f the concert outside listening to what was my favorite band at the time, RATT, playing what had to have been an amazing show. I hate that I missed it but at least I got to see them and listen to the concert. Oh how I miss those days...
You were definitely a real fan of
R A T T
@ Nope. Just a joint!
Dude, there are millions of us that was in that situation. I was on acid outside. Out of stupidity I gave my ticket to a pretty girl, and spaced her off. But I got to hear them lol. Outside.
Best guitar duo there ever was and will ever be in my opinion
One of the best bands of that time. Love RATT!
I KNOW YOU REALLY WANT TO LAY IT DOWN!
RIGHT NOW!
And how!
I spent the latter half of the 80’s listening to Ratt when all my peers had converted to hipperty hopperty rubbish.
Good vid.
Now that we’ve had some Ratt n Roll, how about next we have some Rockin’ with Dokken! The most underrated band of the 80’s.
Ah yes;Live to rock - rock to live, it’s all you’ve got, when you’re down on the skin, yeah...
Oh yeah dokken is another level of dock so different yet the same!!!!
Well skip shadowlife whatever tf that was, but George Lynch learned nothin’ (for he went and reformed Lynch Mob with a bunch of nobodys then released that god awful Nu-metal style album which I’m surprised didn’t kill the band, but then Oni yo-yo’d for years before leaving for good a couple of years ago....
@@dragonqueen6589 well said, on all counts.
HolyDiver73 Dokken is underrated?? Icon, Keel or Helix were/are Underrated. Dokken have always been. One of the most often

Ratt stands toe to toe with all of the 80s hair metal bands .. They’re first 4 albums went platinum when buying albums actually meant something and they ALWAYS had the hottest chicks in they’re videos !
My mom told me she had NEVER heard of Ratt. I was so SHOCKED. They are legendary
Either she didn't like or wasn't a fan of rock/metal music OR "Ratt were BEFORE her time."
I grew up with RATT , there were always one of my favorite bands of the 80's.
Today, Robbin would be 63… too bad his demons overcame him eventually, but we shall always remember him fondly as the gentle giant who few have said a negative thing about.

It's amazing how forgotten this band is, compared to the other contemporary bands.
Infestation is an amazing album from start to finish. Lost weekend is my favorite I think but all the songs are amazing and look out below as well. I think having Carlos cavazo on board really gave them an extra punch. I feel like it was kind of an unspoken tribute to Robin Crosby.
I’ve seen ratt 3 times in concert. 1987 Dancing Undercover tour, 1989 Reach For the Sky tour, and in 2000 when Jizzy Pearl was their lead vocalist which also had Warrant on the bill with the late great Jani Lane
One of the first concerts I ever seen back in 1984. They kicked ass.
First time I heard Ratt as a teenager around 18yrs, over 20 something years ago the music blew me away and it still does, it really cemented my love for heavy metal which I'm still very passionate about, those riffy guitar melodies and kick ass vocals, and with songs you could sing along to. Even though I've gotten into much heavier bands since then I still listen to Ratt, their music is timeless.

Warren is one of my favorite guitarist. Robin Crosby was the reason I always wanted a Jackson guitar.
Oddly, the King V is named after him, but he played a Double Rhoads.
oh the good ole' days of Stephen, Juan, King, Torch, and Bobby.
Yep, not now, Torch hasn’t been there for three years (some point in 2018, he finally decided he was over it.... whether it was a only being tired of the band or whether it was something more personal, we can only speculate) and King is watching from the stars. Apparently Stephen has something in the pipeline and it will feature Bobby on drums...
I met them at a hotel in Poughkeepsie, NY back in 1984. They were so thrilled that I knew who they were.

Robbin Crosby also played lead guitar. You state that Warrens lead guitar for was amazing on Dancing Undercover, and it is, but the solo on "Drive Me Crazy" was played by Robbin.
Yeah, I definitely got that wrong. Should've confirmed it before assuming it was Warren!
Both were clearly excellent guitarists. Anyone who is at an intermediate level and has tried to play "Round and Round" on Rocksmith knows this quite well.
Warren was more flashy and “modern” with his playing back then. Robbin was bluesier. They were both great within the styles they played.
Although, Warren was the more technical player. Robin was no slouch he had some tasty blues phrasing. They both complemented each other and were a huge part of the Ratt sound!
