  • It's September 1994 and i'm in the Liverpool Area, Merseyside. At this time semaphore signalling and signal boxes were still in use and that was my reason for visiting. We see Merseyrail operations at Birkenhead North, West Kirby and Hoylake. The stock in use was the BR PEP class 507 & 508 EMUs, some of which were still in BR blue & grey livery. Excellent Soi soon to be history. I can remember when the 508s were new on the South Western, showing my age now!

Yes, i remember them on the Southern. I have a pic of one next to a District Line CO/CP stock at Wimbledon back in 1981. Of course, some of the 508 trailers are still running on the SR, formed into 455 units!

The Class 507 and Class 508 trains are pretty much identical to the Class 313, Class 314 and Class 315. But soon Merseyrail are replacing them with the Class 777 Metro that some have entered service. And some of the Class 508 were used on Connex Southeastern before they were replaced by the Class 376 in the early 2000s.
And some were used on the East Coastway Line and West Coastway Line and on the Silverlink Metro North London Line and West London Line. Before they were replaced by the Class 378 when London Overground took over in 2007.

They were still in BR blue up until the 90s??

The semaphore signals and manual crossing gates look oddly antiquated next to the very modern looking Class 507s and 508s.

Miss the noises of these and the sister locos, the new Lizzy line locos are too quiet 🤐.

Did you ever see the Merseyrail 73's in action?
Also, why do 3rd rail units need a cant rail warning stripe, when the power source is on the ground?

Never got any MR 73s although i did have a couple for haulage on a Pathfinder railtour. All BR stock get the electric flashes, stock can be hauled away to works ect and ended up sitting in a siding under the wires......
