It is bizarre that I am 40 years into my career and I am still seeing the requirement for a college degree. I had removed my BS degree from my resume and every single HR person required me to provide this information. I am in computer sciences and frankly that education from a University did a terrible job of preparing me for my first programming job and provides nothing for me now.
@@barneymiller4088 it’s pretty simple. why lower your standards when there is already an overwhelming number of applicants?
It’s like paying for a luxury car: you’re paying for a brand, not actual quality.
You're paying for access to a network when you go to Ivy Leagues. Not even a brand, but access to building a network that could serve you well in the future
Not true. Some of the best minds and resources are at these universities and the network as the comment above says are incredibly powerful.
For those that actually went, we know.
Also, a weird analogy because a lot of luxury cars actually have specific features that do provide better quality for long lasting and improved performance
Prejudice blinds people to facts

@@Princetonian4eva In other words: Having high charisma is more important than having intelligence. Getting your future boss to hire you is more important than getting that paper that says masters degree.
Students are realizing that elite and expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better!
Parents who pay for these schools are realizing it too.
As a lifelong academic, I don't see the point in Ivy league school. I've rarely been asked where my degrees come from. People care whether or not you can do the job, not that you wasted money on a school with a flashy name.
No one should care about these schools or anything about them. The sole focus should be what can they teach? Are they actually doing a better job, or is just the name of the school?
Some of the absolute best teachers are hiding at Community Colleges, where most of your instructors keep their egos in check so you can actually get help and guidance from them.
Certain academic circles and publications certainly do ask but if you’re not apart of those, you wouldn’t know either way
Yep. At work, I was assisting a man who blurted out “I’m a Yale graduate.” 😣
I knew he was lying. Nothing goes on at my job where our clientele need to mention a uni.
I did graduate (decades ago) from one of the more prominent hbcu uni. Some on the ppl whom I know, from our mutual enrollment, completed graduate programs (law, other things) at Ivy League. Nobody really brings this up at homecoming festivities.
I attended a state uni for grad school: when I attend association conferences or functions for my profession, not one single person ever asked which grad program I completed. Not one.
In 2021, someone from uni days sent a pic around of one of our friend’s being sworn in as a judge in HER state. SHE didn’t put it on her FB, or 📢. One of our mutuals who sees her (the judge) oftern, attended the ceremony and took the pic and sent it to our friends.
Ppl don’t really ask your school. It’s on resume, or vita. If you get the job, they won’t mention your school anymore at the job.
except few professional category degree , most worker today no needed to have Ivy league school diploma

My daughter dual-enrolled in high school, got her AS degree at a local community college, and is one semester away from her bachelor's degree at a local state school. When she goes to law school, it just so happens that my alma mater's law school is local, too. And I don't have to donate vital organs to pay for it😊
Good for you, glad to hear it!

Wow! Crazy! I went thru my American university, on their cost, for the same thing! Dumb!
Sounds great.
A family member of mine went to university in France 🇫🇷 & Switzerland 🇨🇭 for a fraction of the cost ! They also got access to affordable housing & transportation discounts etc
My friends daughter went to college in Netherlands. After the last class on Thursday, she’d be on a train with her Europass for some other country. She had a blast.
Sorry but MIT is the top school in the world and Oxford's number 3
Ivy League isn't what it used to be. Its best to go to a community college depending on the quality of them near you. I had a professor say he enjoyed teaching at community colleges because it wasn't as restrictive and you have students from many different background that can offer various viewpoints. Whereas in some colleges, the students tend to be mostly religious or share the same political beliefs.
my friend after high school couldn't find a job he like then he went to local community college to get this real estate management study , he find a job right after class ended and live well in life.
Most students are looking at ROI aka Return On Investment. Going to Harvard to get a teaching degree to thereafter make 40K after spending 360K in books and tuition not to include living expenses does not make sense!
I went to school at Columbia University. My tuition was 2k per credit hour (124 hours needed to graduate), the school did not have any of the majors I wanted to study (Business), there was no Greek life or party life, and I had no student housing due to how difficult housing is in NYC. I graduated with a degree in PoliSci because they didnt have my intended major and I spent 3 years unemployed because of Covid.
I will NEVER encourage my kids to go to an Ivy League school over a state school.
Why did you attend Columbia instead of another school that better met your needs?
PoliSci? You should have known unemployment was part of that package. Don't blame the school. If you would have majored in STEM I'm sure you would have done better during COVID.
@@cbunix23 Good question. When you're a kid, you just go to where people say is "best" for you since you don't know what your needs are.
Columbia was ranked no.2 in the country and I got waitlisted by Harvard, so it's the one EVERYONE told me to attend. It wasn't until after I had already enrolled that I realized they did not have a business program.
@@lx95020 Who knew covid was coming? Who knew we would all socially isolate and people skills would fall into the gutter? Who could have foretold this future?
In an alternative universe, I'm sure an alternative version of myself majored in STEM at MIT then a massive EMP blast fries all technology systems after graduation. Well, why didn't that version just study polisci or some liberal arts? Why didn't he focus on people skills instead of tech skills?
See why this train of thought fails under logical scrutiny?

I've worked with Ivy League grads in the financial world. The only thing I've found them to be truly excellent in is arrogance and pretentiousness. An HR acquaintance of mine at my old corporation told me that place trashed Ivy resumes. Too much hassle. Not enough upside to the corporation.
Thanks for the input! 😊 good to hear from those on the inside.
Yep basically. I’ve seen this first hand.
But they get the job anyway, over by you? Putting the HR hearsay aside . . .
@l.w.paradis2108 Not anymore. They tried hiring a few. They didn't last. Quit. The rest of us breathed a sigh of relief. Granted, the fact they even were working there was because they were impressive enough or didn't have good enough connections on Wall St. Still had the superiority attitude though.
Sorry, were NOT impressive....
My neighbor's son went to one of the SUNYs to study business. He did not get a job for almost a year. He worked in a pizza store and a few other odd jobs. Only one or two students from his class who had connections in finance companies (and had close to a 3.95 GPA) got internships there. He is now working in a car dealership in sales.

I graduated in a community college. I was working full time and studying at the same time.

Now I earn $275k/year while maintaining my humble and simple lifestyle.

except few professional category ( law medical physics or math . . . ) , going to Ivy school is waste money and possible become a communist extreme
My bachelor's degree graduation was cancelled, that was so depressing after all the hard work. Then we had to do online hybrid with masks in person all through my master's degree program. That was so lame. Worst experience ever. So miserable. I feel bad for the people who just want to learn. I know their pain.
As a person who works with professional corporations, I can tell you that businesses are getting tired of the so called "educated" options. We are finding entitlement, activism, ignorance working with others, arrogance (wanting to change processes without understanding current ones first) and lack of drive are issues we see with the highly educated. Those that haven't gone through those educational institutions seem to have more hunger for success, are willing to prove it and get along with the regular co-worker.
I think the university system works on an out-dated model that must change. I know an old friend who went through college and graduated with a business degree and had zero experience in an actual business. Once he graduated he got a job offer, he worked there and they let him go because he lacked basic social skills that are required to work with others. He was book smart but socially he was extremely awkward and judgmental to everyone because he felt entitled. He’s working as a bus boy at a chain restaurant now because he lacks the bad skills that are required in interpersonal relationships. Instead of trying to work on his own communication issues, he just decided he doesn’t care.
That’s the problem with universities, they lecture and then they have no obligation to teach basic skills needed to be able to work in the real world.
A business degree without any real world experience is just a major problem.
Nobody is choosing their college based on their COVID policy. Stop it.
They’re not going there because they don’t want to be dictated to by communist philosophy! Wake up!

They are missing out on the social aspect of college and more individualized attention of the smaller schools. In the state schools, you are just a number. Making the small schools more affordable would help a lot.

So weird. I don't get how you can publicly and proudly discriminate against 2/3 to 3/4 of applicants, and then only have your applications drop by 3 to 5%. They should be celebrating.
Jessica says “Public schools in the south” with such disdain … as if UT Austin is a half-rate school. What an elitist! She probably doesn’t realize that the top 10% of each high school class can access UT Austin which is what makes it so diverse while still having rigorous academics.
Her distain comes from the psychological need to have her Ivy degree be "worth it". I've experienced similar attitudes from colleagues that went to "the" state school whereas I got a 85% ride at a little liberal arts college. After decades in the high-flying corporate world my opinion is that success is mostly up to the individual. It has very little to do with how prestigious your degree is.
Last I checked UF was also a top ranked school
Also UVA and UF are great southern public schools

No offense but I doubt we're seeing an en masse dumping of the Ivies so much as more students wisening up and simply not applying to the Ivies. At the end of the day the Ivies' admission rate stands at 3%. Chances are over 97% of those who didnt apply wouln't have been accepted anyway.
Yea, I think this is the true answer. The acceptance rate to amount of effort just isn’t worth it.
If I can make a suggestion as a 30-year-old who never went to college.... TRAVEL!!! It's much more affordable and it's much more rewarding. I'm okay being a janitor because I'm not in debt and I don't have to be married to my job. I can leave up to six months a year and not get fired. What lawyer, doctor, professor, journalist, etc. can do that??
One of my teachers once said : rich man can ride in a Rolls-Royce, and then someone will charge more to repair his Rolls-Royce
I went to Penn State and Community Colleges and collected enough credits to go to UT nursing school. BSN. I worked for 36 years in nursing. In the state job I achieved, I beat out master-prepared nurses with my experience. The medical field needs more educated nurses. Go for it. I loved being a nurse. ❤
Universities used to instill a sense of discovery. Not coddling fragile minds with “safe zones.” Not worth the cost.
I agree with a lot of what you’re both saying. I took some classes with an online school for motion graphics . I was coming at it as my “retirement” career but quite honestly for a young person seeking to go into this field it’s a heck of a lot cheaper than “art school”, the classes are extremely hands on and the instructors are all working professionals. The trades are a great option as well…start earning money quickly, no debt and a real skill that will always be needed. Also, in this day and age one needs to think of “portable” skills…wherever you go you will be able to earn money. (I should add, I have one of those “expensive” degrees…)
Unless you need to be there to cut up a cadaver in med school or something, why can't it all be done online for a miniscule fraction of the cost of in-person college? The college loan program seems to be there to prop up this buggy-whip industry of filling college buildings and dorms.
Just go to the college that gives you the most financial aide (assuming they have your major). In the end, your internships are what get you a job, not the name of your college. And trade schools are also a great way to get a good job after your apprenticeship. I went to an Ivy and work with people that went to state schools. We do the same job. It doesn't matter in the end.
Nowadays, more and more people are looking for quality instead of the name. It’s like paying six figures for a Lincoln Navigator but you’re paying for a glorified Ford Expedition full size SUV
They don't want to $100,000 for zoom classes.
depends on what you want to do .... if you want to run a business, just do it, if you want to be a Pharmacist, then u gotta go to college
That was shockingly well conducted and both women put together some strong arguments. I would also like to throw out there that between trade schools and the Ivy League there are tons of places known as public and private universities and colleges. The options are not become an investment banker or a plumber. You can graduate from a "Southern college" as a lawyer, teacher, nurse, doctor, admin, journalist, etc. While most people don't wind up following a straight career path, they are still hoping for some return on their investment, like being able to get a job after they graduate. Which if your degree is in Women's studies, might be hard to do.
My daughter attends an Ivy League school.. It was her dream school She loved her experience and has thrived academically and socially -- and the financial aid was financially beneficial for our family ... but I can't say that is would be great for everyone ... or that college is the best move for everyone
The word is getting out that high priced university degree is not what it used to be…
The ivy league destroyed their most valued possession, credibility.
Canadian universities include 2 years of real world experience so you actually graduate with 2 years experience under your belt in your degree area
Love how people are focused on the cost when Ivy League schools have the best financial aid packages for students from average to below average income households.
It was cheaper for me to go to Princeton than any of the local colleges within a 100 mile radius from where I grew up and MUCH cheaper than any of the UC schools
But seems like people are more focused on preconceived notions or their individual experiences with a few Ivy League grads to see past their own prejudices and explain away all of the amazing benefits one gets from attending one of these universities
But hey, what do I know
I just graduated from one 🙃
Agree with what you said. My sibling is currently attending an Ivy as a full ride student. He will be graduating debt-free. So many people still assume that attending an Ivy means going under tremendous debt just by looking at the sticker price. I also know someone who graduated from Cornell, but was able to pay back any loans he had within a year because of his financial aid package. So many people act like they know everything about the Ivy League when they are just displaying their ignorance and jealousy.
Finally...thank you!
I can't imagine any serious student wanting to attend these woke wastes of time.
Stop making everything political. You are falling in the trap that the elites have created…common people fighting among themselves, so that they can never build solidarity to fight against the elites. These are elitist universities, and if you think elitist are only “woke”, then you are sadly mistaken and obviously miseducated yourself.
Great segment, ladies! I hope your messages reach lots of young folks.

Since April, 2022 most Covid deaths have been in the vaccinated (KFF.org). This is very odd; measles was a big killer in Africa (20% of those six years old or younger died in infected). But with the measles vaccines, measles deaths dropped from 2 to 4 millions per year to 200,000 or less mostly in the unvaccinated.
I've had COVID twice. The first time, I was infected by a vaccinated person who had a bad reaction to the shot. The second time was because I got sick from the Canadian "wildfires"smoke in my area. Gone are the days of elite colleges! Even kids who is smart prefer universities with reasonable fees / get scholarships and place of education without much drama and chaos !!!
Defund, boycott, and file civil rights law suits . As for refunds too!
But what you are not recognizing is the promise of Ivy League schools is that if you graduate and pay the tremendous fees, you will be successful.
Trade schools and Community colleges offer great educations. If later on when you become more mature and can support yourself, if you want to further your education at a certain university go for it. Life is costly , we are all struggling to put food on the table and pay for health care.
Actually if you make Phi Theta Kappa (honor society) colleges will offer you a free ride. Usually state school w/free room and board. However most kids see community as second rate schools and don’t want to put in the work.
What the American political leaders don't realize is these College kids are upholding the DEMOCRACY they (leaders) claim to represent.
More privilege and less competition for the elites is the most likely outcome.
Why would I spend $60k/year to

I went to a small College that was elite and it never helped me in my career.
Good sports teams and Greek life! That’s not the main reason to go to college!
I recently found out about a teacher who retired to become a truck driver. His wife went with him.
For the first time I completely agree with Jessica’s perspective at the end. Because a person ends up working at something different than their major does not mean that college was not worth it.
Not "skilled employees, but someone with a degree....." huh?
college is only acceptable when one NEEDS actual.professional guidance in the fields of medicine, science, law, engineering.....but other.professions can and should be done under a trade or specialty post secondary school and it's okay to go.that route
I trust Forbes and WSJ rankings these days. Beginning annual salary should be weighed more.
Go to trades school become a plumber, electrician, mechanical... 6-7 years, you'll be making 6 figures with no debt. If you're great at math we still need engineers though.🤓
Going to state schools and all that sounds great for probably most kids, but it’s really really nice for intellectual kids to be amongst a larger number of other intellectual kids.
If you have a really nimble mind it’s like being really athletic, you don’t wanna play pick up basketball with the folks that shoot the ball with two hands and pick up the dribble while their feet are still moving.
It appears that if you are really intellectual, with a nimble mind, you cannot express it today in what used to be ivy league universities
My kids didn’t apply to ivies because of cost. Southern state schools give lots of scholarships
Elite college may work for many, but if you're going to get an advanced degree anyway, who cares? I have colleagues that went to Harvard, Yale and Princeton. I make just as much money as they do, which is to say about $400k. I went to a no name undergrad and a grad school ranked around 100, but here I am.
They don’t care. They have a massive number of applications anyway.
Cornell has one of the best Hotel Industry Programs in the world! And has, since there were only two or three in the world, one of the others being a program in Switzerland!
Blue collar here power tools makes the trade jobs much easier these days it's not that hard

What I dont like is some of the horrible people that have gone there.
They destroyed their brand.

Six feet under.
Good for those students. Columbia, NYU and the others who staged "squatter communities" embarrassed the name brand. Also, the youth understand they cannot depend on job security - no matter how hard they work.
I graduated from NYU (for grad school). Go violets!
Unless they are engineer grads, who are less likely to be woke, why would any company hire a liberal arts grad at all, much less from Ivy League school. Maybe for janitor or food service. Every job in our co. needs practical education from engineers to welders.
Most states have a pretty good university and the cost to stay in state is usually much less expensive and a much better investment in available jobs vs loan amounts.
College was very over hyped. I was fortunate enough to have and older brother to watch his friends get degrees to end up waiting tables or something completely unrelated to their degree. That was a big warning sign for me. I also make more then most of my friends with degrees in IT. Not to mention debt to income ratio.
Unfortunately attending college isn’t about education anymore it’s become a big business when the student is on the losing end.
We’re tired
Amber is just saying a bunch of nonsense. If she wants to say people just want to go to college to party thats more believable than kids scared about not having a graduation ceremony
There is nothing elite about becoming a mindless, chanting antisemitic zombie.
They didn’t like the Covid restrictions? That is some very selfish thinking.
imagine paying 60k for 4 yrs and not getting to go to graduation. It's not the point of your degree, but that really sucks for USC seniors & the parents.
Some colleges, not just Ivy League, are so obsessed with political agendas and the cost is massive. Enough students don't want the bs and just want to learn. It was super crummy when professors would insert their opinions and all that into class. It has nothing to do with learning the material. People are sick of it and don't want to spend the money.
This is more speculation than reporting.
Schools in the military are excellent. NAVY and AirForce avionics are excellent !
I’m almost finished getting my associate’s at my local community college (unless I fully commit to getting an engineering degree, in which I’ll take a few more engineering-based classes at my CC to save money).
After that, unless I get a full-ride or near full-ride scholarship, I’m going to a state school. Beyond that, if I commit to getting a master’s in Engineering, I’ll apply to the cheapest grad school possible.
A dip in ivy league applications is hardly a reflection to a lean into southern public state schools. Overall state and public schools saw an increase. Also the US is so behind in tech skills that we expanded visas to allow for skilled tech. Trade schools are definitely needed but pretending that we are not well below science and tech wise and we not longer compete globally is reducing our capitalistic abilities domestically
I think I read a few years ago, that a study found that, the education you get from Harvard is no different than what you get at lets say a University in Oklahoma, but there are some companies that won't accept you unless you have graduated from an ivy league school
The main reason is to develop connections. For women, it's an opportunity to meet potentially higher earning men.
@@P.90.603Which is funny because a lot of times they want to accept these legacy admins and children of rich people….
The main difference between Cornell and the other Ivy League schools is Cornell is only partially a private school. The agricultural school is public. The rest is private.
Ivy League colleges are the Bud Lite and Target of higher education.
Would not hire current grad from most IVY league schools.
The CEOs passed from the Ivy League colleges like twenty years ago, they don't reflect the current level of education.

Isn’t the %age math wrong at 1:54? It should be 0.13% and 0.08%, right? Or am I doing it wrong?
People who can get accepted will almost always go. And with the multi-Billion dollar endowments, it's often cheaper for a student from a middle or lower income family to go to an Ivy league school because of financial aid available
If you start your apprenticeship at 16, then finish the course and continue to work until the age of fresh graduates, 23. That's about just below $150k of total income and comparing to near $300k tuition fee debts. That's a whopping $450k difference, provided you immediate find a job straight after college. Good luck

IMHO all disciplines related to writing codes, developing algorithms, and computer system analysis could be de-academized altogether. I don't see the point in having a BS in Computer Science. The remaining academic degree awarded at university should be BS in software/ hardware engineering. This would speed up training and makes it cheaper.
