The game ending with “you are Alex YiiK, go fuck yourself” is a power move if I’ve ever seen one. It’s like when a dog pees on your carpet while maintaining eye contact as if to say “go ahead, yell at me. That’s not gonna un-piss your carpet.”
That's not really the point though. The ending is the story Alex tells himself because he refuses to grow up and accept that he's a pos. If you actually played the game and paid attention you would have got that but most people assume it's a nonsensical story because the game has been memed to death

You can criticize the game that doesn't mean any criticism is valid.
Imagine making an rpg and you not only make the the final bosses (the comet and proto alex) unbatable and forced losses, not only do you NOT fight these again, but when you final beat the game you learn NOTHING about what was going on,eveyone's dead and you don't even know what the ending actualy MEANS.
You want a big reveal that explains everything in a POST MODERN rpg inspired by murakami. Smh. There's a lot of reveals and almost everything is explained but again it's inspired by murakami so you have to pay attention to the context and subtext of every scenes and who is saying what.
If you want a Star Trek-styled plot where everything is explained and then summarized at the end, don't play something with "Post-Modern" in the title. If you don't want to eat mystery meat, don't get a hot dog.
No guys, you don't get it, it's postmodern, that means the game gets to be sh!tty and free of criticism.

for comparison, you can look at the movie "fight club," a famous postmodern movie that is also misinterpreted by many other people. the only difference is that fight club is worshipped for the wrong reasons, while yiik is criticized for the wrong reasons.

I was gonna say this game got announced before p5 when I read the first part of your comment but I totally agree. There's a great story in this game but people would rather assume it doesn't make sense cause it's more fun to meme than pay attention to a story
@@amuro9624 No, that's not true. Persona 5 is just a fundamentally better-crafted narrative.
Simple example? Show Don't Tell. It's so absurdly fundamental that whenever you even bring it up it automatically sounds condescending, but Persona 5 strives here where Yiik fumbles. Persona 5 shows you what the metaverse is before it tells you. Whenever it explains one of the concepts, you have something from Kamoshida's castle to relate it back to, so you can easily understand what they're talking about.
When Yiik introduces the Soul Space, it spends fifteen minutes talking about it without actually demonstrating the concept, so it remains an inexplicable abstraction that, if you're lucky, kind of makes sense in theory. The first time you get to experience the Soul Space outside of the 15 minute still render that they dragged out into an entire cutscene is at the END of the game, and even when you get there it's just... normal space. But like, for your SOUL, man. It's such a fundamental construct for the story to be founded upon, and you don't get to actually see what it is until far too late, and when you do it explains NOTHING.
The mic for Jawsh is clearly discord, but I can't tell whether Jo is in the room, not mic up and it's just Dash's mic picking him up, and the other possibility is that he's half the way across the room from his computer, balls out

On April 4th, 2023 I arrived home from work. I had just finished my shift. Altrive had just posted the infamous yiik video and I start foaming from the mouth out of joy.
I started out hating this game. But now I've developed a strange attachment and unexplainable liking for it.
It's got this bizarre effect, like when a movie is so bad that it's good again.
I always thought YIIk was an joke, did not expect it to be real

Didn't realize Dash hadn't already played this, but I'm glad he got the vibe down a year ago with the phrase "I'm totally yiiking out right now"
I wasn't looking at the run time of the video so at one point i was like "okay a lot of shit happened so we must be close to the end" then i look at the length and see that I am only 17 minutes in. This genuinely might be the longest video and game of all time, it feels like I've been watching for at least 40 minutes

The point of having her in the game was to call out people who obsess over internet mysteries and true crime. That's what Alex is doing even though he never actually met her, he's just trying to escape reality.

The whole point of the game is to emulate the style of haruki murakami, a writer who is a master of the postmodern genre. The postmodern genre is basically supposed to be read with the idea that the author is dead so there's no point in trying to guess what the author was trying to say so you should analyze the story itself. Because of this core ideas in post modern stories you cannot trust what any character says or even the narrator you have to look closely at what the characters say to figure out the real story. Like in yiik Alex tells you a lot of things that doesn't add up if you look at how the characters act in other scenes where he's less in control of the narrative. Because he's the narrator he tries to paint the story in a way that always makes him look better than he actually is. That's why the story is happening in the 90's but you have a lot of things that weren't there in the 90's because alex(the narrator) thinks the 90's were cool but only on a surface level because he's a hipster.
Now this is already hard to follow a story like that but even for enthusiasts of the postmodern genre murakami has a style that makes it even harder to decipher the story and his books are usually hard to read because he mixes this "story behind the story" thing with thematic meaning so you can have characters having a deep conversation about rabbits but it's not really about rabbits it's about the main character 's sexual frustration with his wife or some bs like that. He also does not give any special treatment to his main character they can have terrible flaws or meet terrible fates. It's all about telling a story and not making you like the characters or making you feel a certain way about the characters.
It's a very niche style that's hard to read and that a lot of people hate. I've seen many reviews of my favorite murakami book, 1Q84, say that it's complete nonsensical garbage that doesn't make sense and nothing happens in the whole book when to me it was a fascinating story and the author is highly respected by other writers.
So that's why the story can seem random and nonsensical, it's basically a puzzle which is genius imo because understanding the story is part of the game.

The longer this game is out, the less I'm convinced the developer isn't a massive troll and might actually be serious.
YiiK is an extremely personal passion project and is 100% serious. It contains some trolling like any Post-Modern art would, but it's not intended as a purely Dada-esque troll. The hilariously broken combat in Original Recipe certainly drags it into dadaist territory, but the story is not.

@@usernametaken017 It’s tricky! It really depends on how much you think intentionality is integral to a Dadaist statement. I believe that some level of intentionality is needed, which is why while I do believe under a Dadaist lens YiiK is an unqualified masterwork, I don’t just say YiiK is a masterpiece, and any virtues I do ascribe to the art don’t automatically transition to the creators.
The Lemonade Alpaca was a coding error, and the 1.25 Sepiroth Alpaca is less 1930’s Dadaist and more 1980’s Post-Modern.
And then there’s stuff that straddles the line enough for it to be a personal call in my view. The mind dungeon levelling system isn’t a pure troll, it is deconstructing with purpose and feeling, it doesn’t have the same anger as something like a Hannah Hoch piece would. But also, especially when played by people who ignore half the title, it feels in the hands like trolling purely for the sake of.
I really would love to take a sampling of the Dadaist greats and some of the cats from the earlier, late teens Parisian weirdo arthouse scene, and have them experience YiiK, just to get their take. Why doesn’t Doctor Who ever do that?
