Following the release of Blues Funeral back in February, Mark Lanegan Band have recorded four songs for the thirteenth installment in the 4AD Sessions series.
Pull Studios in Manhattan's Hudson Square played understated host to a session that leans heavily on Mark's indelible voice and undeniable presence, as well as the intensity and precision of his band. Filmed during a break in rehearsals for a New York City show that was to herald the release of the album, the session captures a band fully sharpened and itching to hit the road (US dates begin May 10 and are listed below).
Tearing through four stand-out tracks from Blues Funeral, the performance ripples with a quiet fury that will be familiar to all those who've followed Mark over a career spanning more than two decades. Backed by a band as skilled as Mark is charismatic, the ambitious range of tracks such as 'Harborview Hospital' sit comfortably beside the barely concealed rage of 'The Gravedigger's Song', reminding once again why Blues Funeral is such a rewarding listen.
Unlike other sessions in the series in which a firmly defined visual concept was central to capturing the performance, the intention here was to strip away any studio trickery in order to allow the band to stand-alone. That this simplified approach remains so powerful is testament to the inimitable quality of the music on show and Mark Lanegan's enduring allure.

Just saw the awful news and immediately wanted to watch this majestic performance again. What a legend Mark was. RIP.
OMG, my heart is full of sorrow and sadness ..... czcams.com/video/j0NKfBjlKww/video.html
A darkly beautiful voice and a deeply complex and interesting personality in music. I know you never expect it, but this is just heavy news. RIP big guy, I will hear your voice in my head the rest of my life.
@@nohabloemojislosiento4930 Does anyone know how he died?
me to that performance was majestic rip
Had to come to this performance, too. Just can't believe he is gone -unreal
Mark is so badass he has Johnny Cash back from the dead playing in his band
Mark is so badass, than in 90s open concerts for Mr. Cash himself
I saw that! He´s also Mayor Shalbourne
Ouuu yeaahhh!!! ;)
A young Johnny at that too!
fyi his name is Steven Janssens
God damn, Lanegan is just the coolest bastard on the planet.
"Woman, are you home? House of cards, frame of bone. Here I am, earthly bound. Hallelujah, I'm goin' down."
Perfect lyrics and perfect execution.
Ten years later, still rings true. Dear God, bring real music back.
Agreed 👍🏼. Very cool lyrics and song.
This version of "St. Louis Elegy" is fucking mind blowing.
I concur
Rest easy Mark, two years gone today. Thoughts go out to all who loved him and his music.
Thanks David I sure loved him.
I met Mark a few years ago after a show,it was one of the few times as an adult I felt fear before talking to someone because of how menacing and almost inhuman he seems on stage but he was super laid back and gracious. Even though we were all there to see him and his band he seemed surprised so many people know and love his music. It's pretty fucking cool that he just comes out and talks to everyone after the show,a lot of bands might have you pay extra or win some contest to get limited backstage access but for Mark that's just standard. I'm sure he forgot about it 20 seconds later but I'll always remember that. He couldn't be more different than the ruthless rock mercenary I imagined him to be
That is very true. saw Mark two months ago after a gig in Tel Aviv. he was exhausted and even worn out in his appearance, yet so grateful to have a little talk with his fans. I managed to utter a bunch of words and and I can tell he actually listened.
His hands are so unbelievably soft, too. 😂
Awesome would love to meet him
A real artist
i've met him after a show as well, he's extremely humble
He has the coolest face of all time! So much expression, yet expressionless at the same time. It's a paradox!
If a glass of Bourbon could sing, it would sound just like Mark Lanegan,
+Mark Taylor Tom Waits disagree.
+B Bobic A bottle of Bourbon that has been left in a cellar for a few hundred years would sound like Tom Waits.
+Mark Taylor ahahahahahhaha and a barrel of wine?
uahahah :-)
Why man?
SHINE ON MARK you are a mad, beautiful genius. You're the greatest, most underrated American writer and singer working today. For all you fans watching this who get chills and sighs listening to this man, you're not nuts, you've just got seriously, seriously good taste.
👍
I'm fucking devastated, this man is a personal hero. Watch over us every now and then if you can, Mark. We're only small and you're a titan.
RIP
Lanegan would disagree with your last sentence
I feel your pain. I saw Screaming Trees in Reading and was really impressed.Jst came across his memoirs and I miss him
Stop it. You’re a precious jewel in the fathers crown
@@chappym2 yep still true though
So so tragic 😭rest in peace beautiful soul Mark Lanegan Sir🙏🖤 You and your music will live forever in our hearts🖤
Just heard Mark's gone? Wow I can't believe it. What a fucking voice. RIP xx
I thought Mark would live forever after all he went through. He was a big figure in the Seattle scene whether people knew it or not. Good friends and a musical collaborator with Kurt Cobain and Layne Stayley. One of the rawest, heaviest and most emotional voices of his era. RIP fella. If heaven is real, you, Layne, Kurt, and Jeffrey Lee Pierce are putting on one fucking hell of a show up there. Read Mark's autobiography if you want to get lost in one crazy rollercoaster of a life, and listen to all his music if you want to get lost even further. Too many cool people are dying right now.
I think he's the best voice from the Seattle era (Cornell at #2 and Vedder at #3). He was that damn good, and his song-writing was as good if not better than either of them....just an incredible talent who had coolness seeping out of his pores.
@@keithpatrick156 RIP to a legend, and don't take it personally, but seriously... anyone NOT naming Layne in even the top 3 is nuts.
Yes very sad, he was one of the grunge survivors but was taken away from us.
Harbour view hospital a gem among gems.
Jeffrey Lee Pierce would never get along with such a trio of losers 😂 .
His death hurt. One of the only singers from my childhood who's death made me actually stop what i was doing and just think about him for a good half hour or so when i first heard. His book is a must listen in audiobook form. I read it many times but its nothing compared to hearing him speak the stories.
0:06 "The Gravedigger's Song"
3:45 "St. Louis Elegy"
8:25 "Riot In My House"
12:05 "Harborview Hospital"
Bless you my sweet summer child, bless you
Thanks.

Thank you so much
blues funeral is such a powerful and perfect album!!!!
It made me a fan for sure
It's the one that got me into his solo work, such a gem. That tour was amazing.
perfect album
@@greymodoy2126 for sure bro. And Bubblegum too. The others only a little bit lower. But I've not yet found a bad song of the Immortal
I was obsessed with Blues Funeral when it came out. It was a magical record. RIP Lanegan...
Man I feel that. I got the record and spin it often to this day. It's a masterpiece!
The best combination of bad ass music and persian rugs I saw in my entire life
What a voice. What a feeling. A great companion for many many moments. God bless his soul, RIP Mark!

If there is one guy who can bring me to tears simply by singing, it must be Mark Lanegan...
RIP Mark, I will always come back to this performance
this performance is amazing
This is so fucking good. It blows everything that is playing on the radio out of the water. I hope you are raising hell where ever you are

Every once in a while I'll have a bad day or just need some beauty in my life and I'll find myself right back here. Thank you for the soul healing music.
Gobsmacking 16 minutes... Have to listen again and again. Mark Lanegan has to be my top vocal ever - just incredible!
A true artist -uncompromising in every way. He could have rode the hit-machine during the commercial success of The Screaming Trees.....Instead, he made art. Musicians like Mr. Lanegan keep music worth listening to. Thank you sir!
As much as I would like to see the trees together, this is more interesting, And the projects Martin does are as well. But both artists have tread different wanters and though that's cool, it would not gel together again.
Plus the brothers.... :P
RIP Mark Lanegan, the tunes in this are some of my favourite songs of the last decade. Brilliant.
totaly briliant rip mark
This is the best thing I've found on CZcams for a long time. 16 minutes of absolute class.
This sound is absurd. Fuckin' awesome.
Que clase de banda. Ostia, suena cabrona. Mark, te amo por siempre
69th like! RIP Mark Lanegan ❤️
That guitarist is unreal.
Who is?
yeah the Johnny Cash holograms are getting too good these days
I'd love to know who it is

The most stunning version of St. Louis that I have ever heard. This whole set is an absolute joy. Lanegan, you will be so missed.
This singer used to open the 2 doors : hell & heaven, and now he is telling his story,
Amazing guy!!!
Time ceased to exist as I immersed myself in this mesmerizing performance.
Thank you
@@marklanegan3404 You are welcome.
This sounds amazing! RIP Mark. The world feels lonelier today.
1:45 Much praise to the cameraman on this. Usually, I hate when they cut away from the guitar player during solos, but Mark’s facial expression is so heartbreakingly blue during Gravedigger. In true Seattle Style, the man was terrifyingly genuine. They caught it perfectly. RIP.
Gravedigger's Song always been one f my favorite Lanegan tunes but St. Louis Elegy continues to climb in the ranks. It's an absolute all timer. Rest Easy legend. We'll miss you so...
RIP Mark. We were blessed by your art.
I had a drink with these boys in Nice N Sleazy's, Glasgow after their Blues Funeral Tour. Ended up having a few beers on their bus. Gentlemen the lot of 'em. Shame Mark never made an appearance that night, though, I found it hard enough keeping my cool without the presence of the man himself
He's a poet. I speak about him in present because he still lives in my heart through his music. It was the way we found us in this Life.
I eat and Breathe the Gospel of Lanegan. I saw him with the Gutter Twins in Minneapolis and that was my blessing. The Bible is "Whiskey for the Holy Ghost" --Barracho got me through some tough times.
I love his face.. He would make a striking B&W portrait. He most certainly owns a distinctive edge.
i’m only now discovering ‘Blues Funeral’. better late than never. god damn what an amazing record.
‘The Gravedigger’s Song’ is one of the most beautiful songs i’ve ever heard. keep listening to it over and over.
love the band. but really love the guitar player who looks like Johnny Cash.
Mark Lanegan is a God.
For me, Mark is a perfect example of someone so talented that he demands you listen. For the most part I never liked his music but I had to listen to that voice.
After the first time of hearing Harborview Hospital, that song has torn me up in so many different ways. Now with Mark gone, add one more to that list. Miss you brother. 🙏
Oh little burning star, now you can go to heaven and shine with other legends like you, eternally, your art, forever. 🌟🖤 RIP MARK LANEGAN (1964-2022) 🕯
Greatly missed and it’s day one. His songs gave me such comfort on some of my hard days. Thank you Mark
One of the best singers of his generation - up there with Layne Staley, Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder - and all came from Seattle.
Eddies a surfer from cali....but has lotsa seattle in his soul 😉🍷
Lanegan isn’t from Seattle

The assistant photographer and the gaffer get a credit, but none of the band -travesty!
They are sublime and Mark Lanegan lethal as usual.
Damn the heaviness of that first track at the end with Mark just scowling is too fucking cool. What a badass
i have watched this video approximately 104 times as of 3-9-18
RIP brother. Your music and your story probally saved my life. I hope you found peace.
When i read the comment that said "goodbye mark" while listening to harborview hostpital, it bringed tears to my eyes
Думаю, Марк на небесах продолжит делать то, что не успел здесь.Жаль только, что мы уже не услышим. Один из лучших!
triste né... a voz da minha adolescencia..
жаль, что здесь его уже не увидим не услышим. покойся с миром,Маркуша!
absolutely terrified and blown away from this.
yes. terrrified is the word. im playing this in the last days.
Been years, big fan sir
I work for a govt bank here in India, I want to see Seattle before I die, I want to attend your life concerts 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️
I love you sir ❤️
This is what I always come back to....Whenever. Best shit ever... Bad day, here. Good day, here. Sad, depressed day, definitely here. Better than the album, like most live stuff Mark does. RIP...
four songs playd from a selection of good-inspired musicians and singed by one of the deepest voice in this world...what else??
Just watched this again. Mark was so great and had this unique voice. Wish I could see him performing live once again.
Will always miss him!
My god that voice! It gets better and better with age!
Thanks for everything. Rest in peace, Mr. Lanegan. 🖤
I just read Sing Backwards And Weep and it was brutally honest. After reading it I can’t believe Mark made it out of the 90s. I’m sure glad he did cause he had so much more to do after he got sober. A true artist who never strayed from his own vision. RIP Mark.
RIP, no one like him.
Amazing performance, from Mark and the band. Can't believe he's gone, even though I was surprised he kept going as long as he did. I thought his new life in Killarney would keep him with us for a bit longer, but even so, what a contribution, and what performances (and memories of them) he left behind.
Having just read his memoir, he's achieved what he wanted musically. The tone is perfect. Also, his description of Liam Gallagher was witheringly perfect.
reading it now! so nuts!
Yes it was. Liam Lol where are they now??? Lmao Mark is still writing and recording . One bad dude.🤘
@@smoovebarrett it’s great
I couldn’t put his book down. Such a genius. I wonder if his mother ever realized how fucking talented her son was. Such a shame the way she treated him growing up. No wonder he became a heroine addict. I’m happy that he spent his final days with someone that truly cared and understood him. RIP Mark, you are truly missed by more people than you could imagine.
saw him at the sugar club in dublin, blow me away, best gig i've been to in 30 years
I had enormous pleasure to see Mark and this band of his in 2012. Rip Mark.
Rest in peace, Mark. Your voice will be missed.
mark should be a movie star, baddest looking dude on the planet
Met him last Saturday in Sydney after his performance. He was so nice and polite, I was happy to meet him in such good spirits
What a great bunch of musicians!
Absolutely true!
"Harborview Hospital" is kinda hitting me now that Mark has passed. It reminds me of the life/death dynamic of life. It's a beautiful song. One of my favorite Lanegan songs ❤️ RIP Dark Mark ❤️🖤❤️🖤
you will be missed. life's lonely moments will feel lonelier than ever
I grew up with Mark. He was simply amazing back then. And now looking back...I had no idea.
Bravo Mark.
I always come back to that session. So deep.

💔💔💔💔 r.i.p incredible voice, I loved this era! Had the opportunity to hold his hands, I'll never forget that.
Guy doesn't move much - he's a statue of a man, yet what a voice!
Love his work ever since he was a Screaming Tree.
To me, there is something special about the atmosphere and melody on "Harborview Hospital".
Still listening to this since it very came out and now is 2021....
Rest In Peace Mark 🥀🙏

And peace to everyone who sees this
1) didn't die 2) great songwriter 3) and that voice...
I don't know, have you heard Lanegan and Layne sing together for Mad Season Live at the Moore in Seattle...Layne's voice was hauntingly beautiful and heartbreaking and Lanegan's is dark and gravelly.. a brilliant pairing
fucking brilliant
I prefer some of these versions to the album versions personally
Me too
totally 100% correct.
St Louis Elegy. oh man.
Truly my favorite vocalist out of the Seattle scene. Glad you're still here with us, Mark.
Farewell Mark. Thank you for the music. RIP.
Can't get enough of Mark Lanegan.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! INCREDIBLE HUMAN, INCREDIBLE VOICE
RIP Mark, gutted poured a large one in your memory :(

Rest in Power Mark. Truly a legend.
I saw them in Sao Paulo, Brazil, for the Blues Funeral tour. I actually smoked a cigarette with the Johnny Cash guitarist guy alter the concert. Very cool guy, he told md that he didn't record the album but was rather a touring musician. I was very impressed of how well he was using all the effects as to sound exactly like the record. Either way, Mark Lanegan is a beast!
Ben Neto did u happen to catch his name ?
@@duckking4815 Steven Janssens. check out The Whodads and The Revelaires.
Been a fan of Mark from back in the Screaming Tree's days..So, finding and listening to his more recent music is something of treasure. There is a bit of Ian and The Cult's sound tucked in there, but I like how Mark's sound and style carries uniquely, and addictively right from the start.. Very cool music.
Amazing performance by Mark and the band, amazing job done by the sound engineer. This is about as pristine as you can get.
This little session of music is on another level ,I would love to have sat in the corner and witnessed this
Descanse em paz, lenda!!
Mark lanegan sings from the depths of purgatory, striking the shadow over his music!
