The financial trick you were talking about is called an ATM scam. Very common in South Africa. You try to draw money at the ATM and your card gets jammed in the machine. The scammer then somehow gets your atm card pin and takes all your money.

I currently live in Johannesburg btw, obviously alot of the time you're targeted because you act well off. Generally though it's a great place to be, all the conveniences of the first world and a crazy night life scene aswell.
