The intro alone gives me chills to this day, and no telling how many times I’ve heard it over the last 30+ years. It really jumped up a notch when it was used during the beginning of the Paradise Lost documentary. Haunting stuff.
You quickly talked about how people shy away from the screaming of metal music without taking into account the meaning behind the song one of my favorite quotes for this is: You call it demonic because all you hear is screaming. I call it lifesaving because I hear the meaning.
In the cassette era, the end of this epic song meant I got to flip the tape to Disposable Heroes. Those two back to back are incredible music making. Ill never forget that time in my life.
Crazy how that sticks in our heads. I remember the parts when a song tape on a mixtape would be cut off. So when I listen to the song now, the thought “this is where it used to cut off” flashes through my thoughts,
No doubt, it's mindbogglingly comforting to know that you can type a few words into a search engine and find exactly the song you need when you need it, but the kids will never know that rush of anticipation after flipping the cassette to continue the rock-out, or _Postmortem_ flowing straight into _Reign in Blood,_ or the absolute pauseless tracking on _South of Heaven,_ or falling asleep to _Nevermind_ and being awakened in a panic when _Endless Nameless_ starts, and I was going to say something about the Danzig CD I have with 666 tracks on it, but I just googled around to find the title of track 666 and it's not really mentioned anywhere and I'm worried that the 666th track on that Danzig CD I have is a song that doesn't exist, or it only exists in the universe I'm currently in and only on that CD I have and I may be in trouble about that. Or track 0 on _Songs in the key of X,_ a song I could only ever listen to on the Discman I had 'cause none of the other CD players in my house could skip to track 0. I guess the constraints of the medium you choose to enjoy can make the experience more interesting, when correctly made and deployed.
A friend of mine many years ago went through a very trying time and attempted suicide. He was institutionalized for a while as his wrists / arms healed. When he got out, he had lost his home and apparently I was his only local contact. He had no money and nowhere to go. The police called me one evening and asked if they could drop him off at my apartment that night. Contractually, I was not allowed to have overnight guests (without approval from management) but without hesitation, I said: "Yes". I only had an hour to get ready, so I went to the store, bought a cake, wrote "Welcome Home (Sanitarium) on it and had the song playing as he walked into my place. He laughed and had the biggest smile on his face, and gave me a big hug. We have the same sense of humor. I let him stay with me for three weeks (which is how long I got away with it until the apartment management caught on and threatened to evict me for breach of contract). It was just long enough for my friend to find other arrangements. Heavy metal doesn't end lives, it saves them!
This album and it's predecessor "Ride the Lightning" got me thru my highschool days....Jamel you hit the nail square on the head with your reaction of this one.
I've only seen Metallica one time, but happy for that one time. Because it was in early '83 in a small club in SF; and Dave Mustaine was on lead guitar and Cliff Burton was on bass.
@@bluecomet1109 About like the others....head banging, hair flying about, nearly constantly. Dave was the most active...never would've thought he would be leaving the band shortly. Cliff played a solo...I remember being impressed (having been new to the bass and joined a punk band when I got to SF), because he did so using only his fingers. Not sure if he ever used a pick.
@@Roh_Echt from all of the videos I have seen, It looks like Cliff was the real leader of the band. He started every song, always up front, and setting the pace. Was the solo you saw Anastasia?
@@scottseeland1507 I don't recall. Remember, when I saw them was the first time I ever heard of them. Later that year I bought their Kill 'Em All album on the same day I bought FANG's Land Shark album. In the video I link below...his bass solo is between Seek & Destroy and Whiplash. From what I've learned...Cliff's first appearance with Metallica was at The Stone in San Francisco on March 5 of 1983. They played The Stone twice in March 1983 and I saw them one of those times. I went in the military in '86. In my barraks I lived with a ton of cool black guys who ALWAYS played early rap or R & B loudly, non-stop, that I couldn't freaking stand. I asked my sister "you have any hardcore metal I can blast" ??? She handed me this Metallica cassette. I started playing it. At first I wasn't sold, but by the 3rd or 4th time through, I couldn't get enough. I was finally able to escape all the rap & R & B. Those black guys thought I was crazy 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣. Thank you Metallica !!!!!!
I consider this album to be a masterpiece. That word gets thrown around too easily and I rarely apply it ….but it truly is. Cliff Burton was exploring Bach and Beethoven and applying it to the rhythms.
@@Freedom35ab so true even in rap i wonder how the hell the kid who is died at age of 25 Tupac did come with those meaningful lyrics. This is insane that this young kids could come up with such deep, heartfelt words.
Got to see them on this tour opening for Ozzy, had never listened to their music, they just came out and kicked ass, nothing fancy just in your face unapologetic metal. Loved their entire set but this song hooked me. Little did I know that Cliff would be gone way to soon after seeing them.
I knew a 14 yr old girl, much more mature than i was at 18 then. She thought to run away from home. She was familiar with being in and out of a local "Cedar Springs" hospital. As she got her things together, she played this song nonstop. I didn't know Metallica, but after that experience, i would never forget them.
Man this made me instantly start crying. I plan on singing this song for my girlfriend on Christmas. I play guitar and was going to play and sing but I’d rather just sing to this. So beautifully done!
ANY song off this is great. I asked what it was...he asked me if id ever heard of Metallica. I said nope. he smiled and handed me the headphones. Script. flipped. Loved them after that. Did Alex even finish Kill 'Em All? Lol. I stopped watching when he was halfway into the album because it takes him weeks to a month to react from one song to the next with MetallicA. He'll react to 20 metalcore songs In a row and then he gets back to MetallicA it's ridiculous. He did Ride The Lightning pretty fast but he didn't pay attention to any of the songs. I don't know what his deal was but he was talking and laughing throughout most of the Ride The Lightning album.
I had a weird thought recently..Only 5 years separates Kill em All and Justice. That seems unbelievable to me now that I’m older and know that 5 years ain’t sh!t!! That’s Kill em all, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets (Garage Days) and Justice in 5 short years. May be the most prolific 5 years in Metal history. The growth between those two albums is insane.

Honestly, this song is a Top 3 classic as far as Metallica's vast and varying catalogue is concerned.
