Its so sad. Frank was at the end of his life and didnt even know it yet. :( i miss you frank! RIP
I was a teenager when all this going on and really looked up to Zappa’s intelligence and reason … it was great to have an ‘adult’ and an icon talk about kids with such respect. I became an even bigger fan of his music and am a hardcore FZ fan to this day
Frank was very gracious in devoting his time in fighting for free expression.
And once again, Frank is the smartest guy in the room. I miss him so much… So entertaining with or without his guitar on, on, and off the band stage. The first amendment is there for a reason!
Just because He was an Anarchist and wanted to Corrupt the World, ..Didn't make Him Smart or Smartest !
What’s funny is that I was about 7 or 8 years old at the time and I used to listen to Purple Rain all the time, including Darling Nikki, and I used to sing along to it, and I had no idea what Prince was talking about. I think that I just sang whatever those words sounded like to a 7 year old. I wasn’t impacted by it all because I had no idea what he was talking about. I just know that I had so much fun and joy listening to that album with my siblings.
My Dad had a strict policy: if there was something out there, be it a book, a movie, a show on TV, or a song, he would find it and play it for any of us in the house who were interested. It was only AFTER it had been played or viewed that he would have an opinion.
He went to town on people who used the excuse "It's so horrible, you shouldn't be allowed to see it." He'd ask them, "Did YOU see it?" "Uh, well ... no, but I've been told -"
Dad never was a person who would live his life trying to avoid crap just because someone else was freaking out -- especially over something they had never actually SEEN! He was the wisest man I ever knew, and I miss him beyond words.
Now thats great parenting. Cool dad!
It comes down to one person telling the rest of us what is acceptable. They have every right to censor themselves.
Zappa was the man
Oh, man, this is gold to me. Local NW nostalgia, FZ AND glam metal-era Layne in the audience... thank you for posting. ❤
Zappa dominates with intelligence as always! I would’ve loved to see him as a wise old man.
Notice the host at the very end? The beginning of the prescription drug epidemic was afoot
Haha, I love it!
I was born and raised on Vancouver Island and we got all the Seattle stations. KOMO 3, KING 5 and KIRO 7. These were my channels back then. Oh and KVOS 12 in Bellingham! Such great memories.
Thanks for the upload. Its funny to see what people were bothered about nearly 40 years ago and where we are now. Lol.
Frank Zappa calling out the mainstream media way back when... he was a genius!
Indeed!
Frank was critical of mainstream media & thought control from "Freak Out" on ("Who Are The Brain Police?", for instance).
Yes, but he called them too conservative.
@benwithab3679 they were Democrats! Al Gores wife ("Tipper") was the chairman of the PMRC
@@benwithab3679the same people who a for trans rights and drag queens reading to kids now were pretty conservative back then
I love this channel……Zappa is pure gold
Appreciate the comments!
Thanks for watching!
O NO !!
It's the Central Scrutinizer.
From the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen!
I know it's an old video, but the irony of it, is that, the most wicked and perverse people, are the ones in power, and yet, they want to lecture everyone about what you should hear or do!
Yep! And most of them leaned left!
Thank you for posting these Zappa TV appearances - this is great stuff!!
You're very welcome.
Thanks for watching.
Really great that this channel provides so many videos of Zappa. Thank you.
Layne Staley 27:14
😂😂😂 I’ll believe you. Gonna scour the Internet for Sleeze’s music 🤣
Excellent questions from the interviewer. Frank was a very intelligent person.
"I think Rock and Roll is for kids."
I remember these fossils. Glad they are on their way out.
I love your warning in the description
:)
Thanks for watching!
Great video-quality!!
In 1985! Thanks!
Couldn't watch these shows on European
tv's in those days...
Talking about keeping
people docile and ignorant...
But better later than
never. Great video!
Appreciate the comments!
Thanks for watching!
@@Lagzatzappateers De nada! I can always appreciate good quality FZ video's from the past.
Keep up the good work.
I had forgotten the FZ warning label in 80's I actually still have the Thing Fish triple Lp in our collection , TY great old content !
... and now we have the INTERNET!
The Dead Kennedys song "I Kill Children" is written from a psycho killer's perspective. It's not like the band were promoting killing, at all. Ludicrous to pick that one out.
Context doesn't matter to 'xtians'.
Imagine what they thought of ‘Kill The Poor’?
We'll return to "Town Meeting" with Ken Schram in just a minute... And now, Steve Pool with his look at this week's weather, after this preview of next week's "Front Runners". Then join me, Dan Lewis, and Kathy Goertzen for up-to-the minute updates from the entire KOMO 4 News staff covering the explosion of Mount Rainier and resulting obliteration of King County.
Isn't that Lane Staley with the hair and glasses?
Yes it is
Yep. We both took lessons from The Maestro out in West Seattle (as did Ann Wilson and the singer of Queensryche). Layne was an amazing singer and is terribly missed.
Words cast spells - Music cast dreams.
Would have love to attended, was at Ft. Lewis. We were at that YFC.
Setting the most vulnerable up
I liked Frank’s point that there is music without any words at all - he wrote an instrumental piece he called “G-Spot Tornado” and another, very beautiful piece he felt deserved the title “I Promise Not to Come in Your Mouth”!
Stars of the Lid is a primarily non-lyrical musical project, and they have some really bizarre names for their pieces as well.
@@wet-read Yeah, ‘The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid’ I know well, a nice listen just before bed. Venetian Snares had some whacky song titles, too, but nothing beats ‘Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict’

I think the problem with the founders of the PRMC was the fact they weren't stupid but they where overprotective parents who wanted to give parents more information however, In reality they either made parents more protective over something so unimportant therefore removing freedom of choice for children and teens. (not to mention the problems it gave the artist like a bad reputation or less popularty.) I dont think they are terrible but they couldn't see the bigger picture due to being too overprotective of their kids. Its the same with other things too: While it may seem scary, things like drugs or giving workers choice of when to rest, tends to be less of a problem when you give the people more freedom of choice.
Surprised Frank didn't bring up Sally's background image when she denied the pmrc was after government action.
The only thing that label did for me and my friends was make us buy the record because we wanted it to be explicit in the first place that was the whole idea do something against your parents wishes right Rebel. album sales rise more than they would have without the sticker yay..
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Was still at Ft Lewis, wish I had known to attend this event, we were at Yakima, if memory serves.
Thats a bummer you missed FZ in person.
I did see Frank Zappa at 17 @Painters Mill Star Theatre in 1981, Place burned to the ground while I was stationed at Ft Lewis, Speaking of this Town Meeting, Was still in Washington for this Town Meeting.
Thanks for another gem. Just how many more rare interviews so you have stashed away?
You're welcome.
There's lots more :)
@@Lagzatzappateers keep em coming 🙏🙏🙏
25:09 that's a great pronunciation of Ramirez lol
Frank
Apart from the ludicrous topic of the discussion, I am so happy and grateful that I live in a country that doesn’t have this crazy type of television that has to break everything into little snippets of program time to allow for “a word from our sponsors”. Listen to “ I am the slime”.
Thanks for everything you did Frank
What country? Sounds nice
How many ads did you watch during this video?
Saw Frank and band at the Paramount. December 1972. Really good but way too loud. Audience member kept groaning for "Mud Shark." Frank finally relented stepping to the mic. "Do you REALLY want to hear the mud shark?" Frank taught it to his band on the spot. Then somehow they played it. And, get this, it sounded pretty.
Painful as the KOMO show is, seems essential history. Who gets to say what we can say.
yeah, this whole period of censorship (not to mention other periods of censorship for movies ,comic books, magazines ect...) is like such an arcane issue now since you can turn on the internet and hear/ see just about anything) . .... and this was only like 30 + years ago, but ...seems like over a century kind of now.
(Oh no!)
No!
(No no no no no no)
No!
(It's the 80's again!)
A very reasonable mass debate!
Basically people have been trying to stop/ban rock n roll since day 1. So using music being exposed to children as a way to stop / ban / censor rock music is just another attempt to stop rock and roll.
Moms for liberty in modern days. Nothing change with those ppl!!! So much hate from bad information and religion. Basically.
11-12 year olds don't even understand the lyrics, hell neither do most adults.
Imagine if these people heard what being taught in schools…
Forget about the music!!!!
27:13. I LOVED Sleaze! Best band ever.
I miss Ken Schram, Zappa too.
👍 Thanks for watching!
the issue with this idea of music and movies causing violent behaviour is that they treat a human child like some blank slate computer hard drive that will automatically download every single thing it takes in and repeat that behaviour every single time. The fact is humans have innate personality traits that will predispose them to liking or disliking certain ideas or activities regardless of how much exposure they have to it. ACDC is one of the most widely successful rock bands ever and they were a household name to millions of people all over the world and I'm pretty sure most of those people didn't become serial killers. The whole argument is absurd and completely eradicates any notion of personal responsibility
"Obtained in VHS tape trade"
Hope this episode was edited by airtime 🤣 the tech difficulties didn't really make their case!

I love how Frank never says anything dirty but these ladies from the PMRC quote the lyrics in every interview! She has a real potty mouth! There must be a compilation reel of all of these PMRC women seeing nasty things, lol.
listen to Frank's cut "Porn Rock"

@@MrJadePinwheel oop, right, pardon me, thanks for correction
This whole thing was started off by Prince, lol. The thing is that Darling Nikki was tame compared to some of the stuff that he did on earlier albums.
Not to these clowns. They could easily forget about everything else that isn’t masterbation. Ironic that a lot of these people were closet sex pests
I personally Couldn't stand that Tiny little low-life or His talentless garbage!
@@highwaystar3780 Bit harsh. Like Bowie and Stevie Wonder, some of his songs will be being played in 100 years' time.
@misterbonzoid5623 lots of Crap will be played in 100yes time...
We need to find the guy who was in the band SLEAZE
Lol. And the woman with the poodle sides pyramid hair.
That guy from SLEAZE is none other than Layne Staley of Alice In Chains.
Sally wasn’t all that unreasonable.
sure she was. Did you notice they're only problems was with pop and rock? They completely ignored country music
@@Wez666 sally is a fucking fascist.
Yep. Word up those taxed prescription drugs on the next show! I wonder if Layne and the gang came back for some sweet, sweet opiates. 😮
I've been watching a bunch of these debates just out of interest and because it provides an interesting reflection on today's music. I have to say...After watching a couple of these debates, it's like they've put up an army of exactly the same looking blonde conservative ladies to debate Zappa haha.
Hmm ... they didn't give Frank anywhere near as much airtime as they gave this Washington Wife who couldn't lie her way out of a paper bag.
That sucks.
Thanks for commenting.
Frank could say in a few words what it took this dipshit society wife all her airtime.
Don't buy pop music for kids. Pop music is for teenagers and young adults.
If you're so concerned, would it really hurt to sit with you kids for half an hour and listen to a record?
Sally Nevius is a potty mouth! Just because Prince said it doesn't mean you have to repeat it Sally!
Agreed. These people seemed to like to repeat it a little too much...
19:47 James Hetfield?
No.
@@LMB222 why not?
Or his long lost half brother! 😂
The question is: is it responsible to create more and more choices around exposure about sexuality to young kids around 10 11 years.
They all dance around that question.
One seem. to forget that sexuality is an extremely strong force. It’s the engine of evolution it can ignite wars and make humans.
Not an extremely strong force for me. It doesn't drive anything in my life whatsoever and never has.

Given the increasing number of people, you are in the minority.
Bossy housewife...!😨😎
All juice.
Sally is 100% correct.
Sally Nevius is correct. We need to rate music packages (albums) the same way we label movies.
How do you rate lyrics and music? Some things said/sung mean different things to different people. Videos are obvious with actual pictures of violence and sex.
Nothing is wrong with sex
Sally Nevius can gladly regulate morality inside the 4 walls of her own house.
