To my nose this is the grand father of hugo boss number 1. I think it was so influential it inspired antaeus and kouros but this with the honey feels like the honey from the vintage paco rabanne pour homme with the raised R on the bottle and the hugo boss number 1 feel without the tobacco from number 1. It is a stunner of a fragrence. I feel like an absolute star wearing this. This is a fragrence for a world before men were treated as second class citizens. I saw an old advertisement that started out by saying its a mans world... never would you hear such an "offensive" statement today from the focus groups dont want to offend anyone ad firms today. Well this is a fragrence for a man who is the alpha of his world whether its just the head of a family or head of a company or ruler of a nation. This was how a man should smell back when they made perfumes for Men. Someone who takes responsibility and doesnt shy away from his actions. Someone mature. A gentleman. If you can get the vintage bottle with the silver cap do it. I have a 60 ml bottle and i will treasure it for the rest of my days. This is a class in the art of perfumery. If you like to study fragrences and like the honey note like i do. If you like azzaro pour homme or paco rabanne pour homme or hugo boss number 1 this is required sniffing. Top 5 vintage masculines no doubt. Maybe top 3 if you twisted my arm.

New to fragrances and to this point, Givenchy Gentleman 1974 is EASILY my favourite. Nothing comes close. I feel the same way about this channel. You know what you're talking about and you inspire trust. My favourite fragrance channel by quite a margin.

Smells nothing like Kouros. The Givenchy Gentlemen 1974 is much, much more palatable and wearable. Great performance. Can be office, night out, elegant and is mixed with something dark and dirty. As Joy Amin said, very complex in a sense. Its definitely from the time it came from but also timeless. Kouros just smells like a bathroom from 1983.

Not scary at all. This has an old school baseline that really works for me. I get tired of the modern simple, sweet, quick disappearing fragrances.

This is my go to EDT...mossy, earthy, woody, spicy. complex and sophisticated. If I have a big meeting or a job interview this or Creed Aventis gets a jersey. I can wear this year year round BUT! I throttle back the application in summer. one spray only and respecting distance so there is no concentration on the skin. One distant spray on the chest and you'll love this as a summer scent. In winter I shoot twice ..on each side of the neck.

Gentleman is like Kouros' father :) I actually received a vintage bottle on Tuesday, and I also tested the currently available bottle in a shop. Only got 5hrs from the current - vintage was much, muuuch smoother was a ballsier opening (strong civet with the honey) and lasted longer too. Funny timing on this review :) great take bro

I alternate between liking and loving this one. I find it to be pretty similar to Chanel Pour Monsieur EDP...not identical, but in the same genre. These are more mature scents that I love when I am in an old-school mood. However, although dated, they do have an old-school vibe to them so I merely like them when I am not in a mood to wear and old-school gentleman's scent.
    Excellent review...much appreciated.

I truly find it a sad commentary on the current state of affairs regarding fragrance when such masterpieces in perfumery as Givenchy Gentleman, and countless others (no discrimination here!) are referred to as "old man" and not "modern"... Actually, I find the term "modern fragrance" quite apropos when referring to the complete and utter dumbing-down of the fragrance consumer. The rise and subsequent thriving existence of the niche industry owes its very soul to the fact that design houses (not the artisans) have committed harrie karrie, either intentionally or not, in the board room's pursuit of profit margins! Please don't get me wrong, the Maisons have launched some extremely innovative, delightful ,and very creative perfumes over the last couple of decades, albeit sporadically at best (looking at you BDC) which have completely reflected, quite beautifully, the concept that was their genesis. IDK, maybe if and when the spell is broken the world of designer fragrances will once again be occupied by "not modern", "dated" fragrances that seduce and court our olfactory palettes instead of gratuitously picking our pockets!

Fragrances anymore are hard to distinguish one from the other.
Givenchy Gentleman is unique, and it *IS* so because it's not like what's OUT there today...sweet, citrus, bubble-gummy, fabric softener, light, etc...But hey, it it was great THEN (which it was...found it in the late 70s or early 80s), it's great NOW! Don't be afraid to stand out from the crowd, because again...this is *VERY* unique from what's available in today's market. A true classic.

I TOTALLY! agree with Kouros comparison K Is a little more honey and amber ..a tame sweetness EXACTLY what a real XY should wear..I disagree on the season .. for me this is year round AM or PM ..It is that classy .. the new version is not the powerhouse of the 80s but is good enough for 4 hours or so

  • @MoahGentle

I was looking for the Gentleman (2017) review but still watched this because I'm curious what the classic might be like. Maybe I will sample it one day, because it's hard to get and hard to wear. But I got another 4 Givenchy fragrances in the last weeks and I'm really happy with most of them, I only wore my signature PH (since 2003) and had some V.I. Fresh Attitude but I want to try more, Insense Ultramarine didn't impress me much but the newer, modern Gentleman seems pretty and easy to like/wear. May become my new everyday scent. Respect for your passion and enthusiasm to a true historic fragrance from an underrated house!

Marijuana is NOT drugs. It is a plant. It is the most effective analgesic plant on planet earth. Do not call that wise plant used for milliana as a drug. This frag does not smell like marijuana at all and i cannot think any person that smokes marijuana would think so. And, since you have brought it up, I am going to ask a dozen friends their opinion.
