  • The Revell VW Golf series will resume shortly but how exactly do you get an M4 Sherman Medium Tank to swim? How does it operate? This training film on the Duplex Drive Sherman should give you most of the answers.
The "swimming" tank was used on D-Day in 1944 and Scale War Machines (www.scalewarmachines.com) thought you might like to watch this scale model reference film. It's for you to enjoy as a thank-you for your support.

Thanks SWM for that very interesting promotional film, in hindsight I think the idea would have been abandoned if they knew we do now. However it dose show you how inventive they were back then.

Mark Rose I don't think hindsight was needed. They knew it needed perfect conditions to work but went ahead anyway.

    Wow... A secret film!
Guess it's not secret anymore. Now waiting for the SIS to come knocking at your door...
Seriously though, great video. Thanks for sharing.

Brilliant film - I'm trying to find the original source of the footage for inclusion in a TV broadcast - can you tell me who owns the film? Cheers Ian

Hi there, this is NARA, US national archives, but I have HD clean hi-res' master copies of this and the material from the IWM in the UK, basically all or a lot of the Sherman DD material there is, plus some of the Valentine DD stuff. This film you can procure yourself, but if you want to save admin/transfer/telecine costs etc, we can discuss and I may be able to supply once we have discussed a modest rate etc. Let me know if interested. If not I can point you to the relevant references at NARA and IWM. I used to work in TV in historical documentaries, so know the drill and can assist.

I think the narrator had procured some of the D-Day issue Benzadrine.

Did this ever get used after D-Day?

if you look at the UAP stuff the Govt is releasing. It looks like they didn’t stop improving the design either

A lot of lives could have been saved if this terrible idea was killed in the early stages like it should have been. Even if you made it to shore your tank is hobbled by all the extra weight and associated mechanisms. What use is a system like this if you require perfect sea conditions for it to work.
