The basics of pencak silat are indeed dances, we call it the "art" of martial arts, because there is an element of art in every movement.
pencak silat is different from other self-defense, because attacks in pencak silat use the strength of the opponent. so it's not the opponent's strength that is blocked by our strength, but the strength of the opponent that we take and we defeat the opponent with his strength.
because I am also a pencak silat coach.

When analysing a martial art, it is good to research also the culture historical & geography of the art to understand the context of the art... There are hundreds or more styles of Silat across South East Asia... SEA is in the equator so the terrain may be soft & muddy in some interior parts, giving birth to low crouching styles for better stability in such condition. Some styles for e.g the style in coastal Brunei, where there are lots of Floating Sea village on stilts with narrow connecting plank bridges, the styles are more upright with more emphasis on tripping, shoving & pushing (of wooden bridges). The same can be said about the similarity & differences between Jiu-jitsu & Luta livre.

As I've heard from several seniors and masters, the performance aspect was born due to the restrictions to teach and practice pencak silat openly during colonial times or simply as a cover for them. Thus, a lot of traditional Indonesian dances a pretty much silat moves beautify.

Mike, you are right Guru Herman Suwanda is one of the best Pencak Silat Master, he is a master in manipulating body joints and muscles, he knows the weakness part of the body. He can pinch you in a part of your body that you dont expect, and it will cause you instant pain. Go look his seminar video on youtube, very good stuff.
and of course Guru Cecep here is also good. BTW, the west Java style of Pencak Silat, especially Cimande style, really is hard on your bone. Their practioner always guaranted to have bones broken as part of their training. Thats way Cimande Masters usually also have the skill to heal broken bones, they also have their own special medicinal oil to help the bone recovery faster. To this day, if regular people have broken bones in an accident, they sometimes dont go to hospital, but theyll go to a Cimande Master clinic, that provide healing broken bones.

Mr. Mike ... wow you're amazing and salute your competence. As a music observer as well as a music player. Then switch to being a martial arts observer. The original Indonesian traditional martial art is PENCAK SILAT.
Yes, every region in Indonesia has a martial arts style. Hundreds of them if detailed. Even in several countries, including the US, there is already pencak silat.
Indonesian DEBUS martial arts, featuring unique, extreme and gripping for the audience. Ok, success for Mike and stay healthy. greetings from Indonesia.

    Just want to review again
Elements in silat: religion/spiritual, art, self-defense, sport, work
    1. Art: the movements are become/from traditional tribal dances in Indonesia
    2. Self defense: Defend yourself from evil
    3. Works : Machetes and sickles are part of the community's plantation/rice field work tools
    4. Sports: flexible movements, speed and precision, requires basic health in sports (cmiw)
    5. Religion/spirituality: because this silat was present from the 7th century during the history of the kingdom, with a large territory and limited availability of military / security forces, the population would be equipped to defend themselves to survive from evil. This explanation is longer because the basis is to defeat the opponent quickly, efficiently with accurate techniques, then a fight will result in life and death, dirty techniques, by using weapons that are carried daily in work, this self-defense is deadly, therefore spiritual wisdom is needed to use this technique.
I love to recommend a show with the title: Cecep Arif Rahman | Silat Maestro Documentary | Kasundan Padepokan

The flow of the Kun'tau sect prioritizes techniques to kill opponents quickly, precisely & quietly, especially targeting the neck.
This martial art is quite dangerous to learn, only a few people can learn it.
There are many kinds of hermitages for honing the kuntau martial arts on the island of Kalimantan, including what I know of : the peak of Mount Ayau (Puruk Cahu-Central Kalimantan), Tamaung waterfall (South Kalimantan), Mount Matumesangat (East Kalimantan) and Mount Bukit Raya (West-Central Kalimantan). .
in the past these places were the locations for martial arts forging and hermitage for Warriors, Knights and Grand Masters on the island of Borneo/Kalimantan.

the small knife, Kerambit. the Dance is the decoy, you see a performance to entertaint, you see harmless dancers, you see no threat, then in a sudden it kills you. The choreograph are actually a series of movement to grap, lock, block, attack, and silat means effective finish, to stop a fight or opponent as fast as you can, in anyway literally, thats why it very flexible, contain unusual movement, tricks, tools, Even gesture and verbal communication.

FYI: Pencak Silat is not a real Silat. Pencak Silat is more of a flower than Silat itself, or the outer shell of Silat. You can say like Kata in Karate.
In Pencak Silat, each movement is usually given a special name, depending on the Pencak Silat school itself. For example: Sacred Palm, Tiger Claw, etc.
That, like the Jutsu in Japanese martial arts, Ninja.
The real Silat actually means killing. And the real Silat does not use movements with special names like in Pencak Silat. There are only three moves in Silat: The opening step, the sidestep, the attacking step.
The opening step is when the enemy confronts you.
Sidestep, when the enemy attacks you.
Attacking move, when you decide to finish off your enemy.
So, real Silat does not need the names of the moves.
And generally, Silat uses a Keris as a weapon. The small curved knife is called Karambit, a typical weapon that comes from the Minang tribe, West Sumatra, Indonesia.

The late Pendekar Herman Suwanda, the author of "pencak silat through my eyes" was from mande muda silat school in west java if i am not mistaken.
If you interested in pencak silat, maybe you can read "pencak silat in the indonesian archipelago" by O'ong Maryono.
