The Story was like a Guide on how to treat your House Elfs, or how we call them, Heinzelmännchen.
You basicly treat them well by ignoring them. They find Thank you Gifts Offensive and even leave the House forever.
If you do want to thank them, make it look like you simply forgot the Items in the Room. Leftover Food stay on the Table, they eat it.
Clothes left with a naked Doll, they put them on.

I actually had a great time reading a copy of the Grimms book of Fairytales as a child. I don't think my Mom realized the nature of the OG fairy tales. That was my exposure to a lot of these stories, including the Elves and the Shoemaker. I also read Hans Christian Andersen's books. In fact I remember when Disney's Little Mermaid came out I was confused and was like.. "I thought she turned into sea foam!?" I was a weird kid. :)
The original Little Mermaid broke my heart as a child, but when I saw the Disney version I felt betrayed. Where was my catharsis?!
@@Logitah Her body turned into sea foam, yes. But because she was selfless and strove with all her heart, her soul was allowed to become immortal and she lived on happily ever after as an air spirit under the warm sun.
That last part somehow seems to be excluded from a lot of tellings, but it gives the story a somewhat happy ending after all

Two things:
1) Cartoon director Tex Avery did an adaptation of the Elves and the Shoemaker for MGM called "The Peachy Cobbler". Unfortunately, I can't find it anywhere on CZcams, but it did air wherever Tom and Jerry cartoons did.
2) Cartoonist Chris Hart published several books on drawing fairies and elves. His illustrations from those books are often accompanied by story-like text.
My favorite retelling of this story is from Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap on the Gameboy Advance. A shoemaker is asleep at his desk, with the shoes lying on top of it. The player is tiny and has to walk from one side of the desk to the other, so the shoes are blocking the way forward. You have to bring a bunch of little guys to finish the shoes while the cobbler is asleep so that the shoes don't block your path anymore. That part of the game really stuck with me for some reason.
For the second story, I was told by an old classmate (or teacher, I don't remember much) a similar tale that had happened to their neighbor's kid, they said that the kid was just playing under a tree until they were taken by what we call the "Duwende" and similar to what happened to the girl on the story, the kid saw some treasure in the duwende's home, the kid was also treated fair and then eventually was allowed to go back home where they're found and was told that they've been gone for several months.
Pretty crazy story I must say, also the kid thought they were only gone for 3 days too, crazy coincidence.

My first exposure to The Shoemaker & The Elves is from an episode of Curious George. I forget the name of the episode, but in it, Chef Pisghetti can't grow enough vegetables from his restaurant's rooftop garden to serve his customers, and doesn't trust the ones from the grocery store. Later that night, the Man in The Yellow Hat reads the Shoemaker & the Elves to George, who then decides to be the chef's "elf."

You always ask, "How were you introduced to this story?" & except for the Disney Classics Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty & The Little Mermaid. I almost always read the book first & am usually surprised an animated version exists. Yet, I do come from a family of teachers & was a sick child, so books were my entire life. You've yet to shock with your origin series as I was an avid reader. It's still fun to refresh my memory by watching your channel. Maybe you'll be able to stump me one day & finally choose a book I haven't already devoured.

I've heard of the first and third stories. The second story is new to me, thanks for sharing. You made me smile when you mentioned the Muppet Classic Theater version of The Elves and the Shoemaker, that was one of the versions I remember that my sister and I were exposed to. I was hoping you'd do The Nutcracker next. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Princess Pirlipat and her parents and the seven headed Mouse King.
I remember seeing a shadow-puppet presentation of the Shoemaker and the Elves when I was little at some kind of puppetry museum in Georgia. At the end of the story the puppeteers came out and talked to the audience and showed us the puppets and it was really cool!
I've always been partial to the 1950 MGM animated short The Peachy Cobbler, directed by Tex Avery. It's a humorous retelling of the story with plenty of Tex's particular brand of humor, with a little sweetness and a little whimsy mixed in.
as someone that worked the night shifts ... i can relate to the elves of the shoe maker ....
because everyone on the day shift were praised by how good things looked and they were given rewards
of work we did during the night .....
i guess the reason we never had been acknowledged or given gifts is because they didnt wanted to us to quit ?
but it had the opposite effect
The one I'm familiar with and was first introduced to the story was the Tex Avery cartoon "The Peachy Cobbler" still one of my favorite Tex Avery cartoons ever, besides the Cecil Turtle ones...😂😂😂🐢🐢🐢
Remember a tamer version of the first story from my Brownies handbook in the 70s. that one involved the shoemaker leaving out food for the creatures, and the old man's daughters being revealed as the helpful imps
I've always loved the story of 'The cobblers children who had no shoes' even though it never made sense. This episode was amazing and a great piece of work.
I saw a movie back then about the fairytale "Die Heinzelmännchen" (It's german). There was a little town whos visited by little creatures every night and every night they will do the house chores that got left behind. Like, EVERYWHERE in the city: private households, the bakery, the merchant, everyone got help, as long as they dont try to disturb them.
But of course, there is this one citysen who got too curious. So she stayed awake, saw them working and screamt with joy, witch shooked the Heinzelmännchen . They ran away and never came back to the town.
My grandma had the Hallmark version on VHS. I loved watching it along with their other stories.
I'm amazed the elves never fainted from the smell of the used, damaged shoes
In the story that Jon tells and the one I first read, the elves were making brand new shoes from the leather the shoemaker left out.
Another awesome one! The Elves and The Shoemaker remind me of the Elf Prince Blacksmith Volundr of Norse mythology. Norse elves (Ljosalfar) are seen in a more positive light , literally described as radiant and beautiful and healing illnesses. Amazing how different countries can have different interpretations of these beings.
Back when I was a kid, I was introduced to the story from the Muppet Classic Theater Elvises and the Shoemaker. And that song was stuck in my head for a while.
I was read this book with stunning artwork by Lamarche. It’s easily one of my favorites from childhood’

I remember the cartoon that used to come on Cartoon Network with the title "The shoemaker & The Elves" I think the cartoon was a Tex Avery cartoon. It was funny and cute.
It was "The Peachy Cobbler".

In Japan, they have similar yokai (Japanese monsters) called zashiki-warashi (or regional variants like Kura bokko、Kobouzu), resembling children that haunt houses by making noises at night and pranking the residents. Houses that are haunted by them are said to become very prosperous.
I’m reminded of the Synths in Fallout 4.
A lot of people kill each-other or threaten to kill each-other out of suspicion of being synths. And the dialogue mentions people killing each-other over things as simple as how the squeeze toothpaste.
In a few ways, Synths are pretty much grownup changelings.
Duuuude this is a GREAT parallel! From the days of old to the post-apocalyptic wasteland Changelings are a great fear for us humans!
The version I grew up with (as far as I can remember) was "The Shoe Maker % The Elves" episode from Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child. I know for a fact that the song that the elves sung when they first fixed the shoes was a bop (also that "Mother Goose" song sung by the cat girls), I vibed with that song and I still remember the tune, especially the ending notes. Also, that King Midas episode scared the shit out of me as a child.
I was introduced to a concept of elves helping people when I join girlscouts back in elementary school. The second rank is called Brownie Scout and thats what I started as. We were called brownies because of the legends of Elves, sometimes referred to as Brownies doing their part to help those in need, like we Girl Scouts were meant to do. And like the Elves/Brownies we never asked for anything in return.
I read Aesops Fables as a child and the OG version of the story you told is the one I remember most. After that the Muppets - 'Blue Suede Shoes' version

I had a story book with different stories, like the original rapunzel where the prince' eyes were stabbed by thorns, the ice queen and the troll under the bridge that was scared of the goat. Stories like that, I was about 5-6 and it had this story was in it, it might have been a bit dark for a kid but I loved it
The version I was introduced to was the Tex Avery cartoon the Peachy Cobbler, I also knew the story from several looney tunes shorts.
The Irish One I believe is the Tale of Oisin, whose entire family certainly has some very interesting myths

2nd story reminds me of the japanese folktale Urashima Tarou. "...He spends what he believes to be several days with the princess. But when he returns to his home village, he discovers he has been gone for at least 100 years."

The reason I know the story is that when my mom was little in Iran one of the only forms of entertainment she had was this Iranian audio tape of the story you can still found a recording of it on CZcams and it's pretty much the modern version but in the recording they basically say one sentence and played like 10 minutes of this random song but what I do like about it is that it has different Iranian voice actor's for every character it describes all the shoes in great detail and whenever the elves are working they sing a little song

I remember one adaptation where the reason why the Shoemaker went broke because he was being competed by a shoe seller who enslaves elves into making shoes for him.

A version of "The Shoemaker's Elves" that I'm familiar with, isn't so much a version as a semi-sequil. I don't remember if it's LooneyTunes or just a WarnerBrothers or Hanna-Barbera SillySymphany, but the story goes that the elves came from a company of elf helpers, and the head elf noticed that two elves hadn't returned in quite some time. So, he went to investigate, only to find the shoemaker getting rich off the free labor. The head elf tells the shoemaker about how a business is supposed to be run, teaching the audience in the process, and the shoemaker eventually lets the elves go, hires staff, and even expands his company.

I was introduced to this story because we put on a play of it in like 3rd grade. I played the town cryer (“10 o’clock and all is well!” - basically an exposition machine)
The Grimm brothers suggested that dark elves were of a dingy color in comparison to light elves which would be fair, and the black elves (which are similar to dwarves) are pitch black

In my book and one my kids had...they weren't naked..lol. I'm 60. My kids had a mom with a warped kind of dry humor..so we had some of the Grimmer versions too.. a big kid's library and they read before they got in school. I REALLY HATED those HOOKED ON tapes, drove me crazy. But kids knew letters by 3 and read before they got to school.
But since they never believed in Santa or the bunny.. didn't believe in trolls or elves either. But u have a plethora of origins i hadnt heard.. always love the channel.

A sci-fi short story I have read, a woman living in a rural area of a new colony planet, found an infant in her garden that only ate and grew, the story alluded to the creature having an ability to mimic. I don't recall the title or writer.

What an absolute throw back! I recall of watching the hallmark version alongside a bunch of other little cartoons on the same VHS!
The first story I know but had a diff ending, the shoemaker made an agreement to feed the elves and clothe them forever but I can't remember if I watched or read it
I actually never read the story. Only saw it on a HBO show called Happily Ever After that retold stories in animation musical form with ethnic celebrities. They told the shoemaker story with an ancient mayan theme. It was very cool.
I was given a copy of the Grimm fairy tales pretty young and I LOVED them. My dad was a bit shocked when we were reading Harry Potter and I excitedly pointed out that the whole 'present a house elf with clothes' was the way to free them was just like the shoemaker elves. That's when I first got hooked on finding adaptations of classics in modern stories.

There is a segment where they do a whole changeling story. It still sticks with me.

When I started Girl Scouts in 3rd grade. We were told the story of the brownies. Basicly the shoe makers and the cobbler story. The morale of the story told to tiny people was to say we must go out of our way to help those are need.
My first time hearing this story was from the Muppets version! So nostalgic seeing that clip ♥

Who here grew up with HBO Family? If you have then you might remember the show called Happily Ever After Fairy Tales For Every Child. This is where I got a few fairy tales before Disney showed them to me. And below and behold this show has quite a lot of different tellings. I hope John Solo, you see this as there are so many on there and I wonder if you will watch these too.

I don't really remember how I came across this story, but one of my favorite references is from Ella Enchanted, where she reads a magical book that includes some fairytales that are different from what she knows. The elves in that story had another adventure to go on and left a thank you note for the shoemaker, but he accidentally put his coffee cup on it and never saw it. I always thought it was such a cute reference.

I had a cassette of fairy tales and this was one of my favorites. The voices were pretty cute.

Funny, Rifftrax just recently released a Japanese made, stop motion version of "The Shoemaker and The Elves" on their CZcams channel that they riff on. Of course, it was the nice, family friendly version of the story. Now Jon drops a Messed Up Origins of the story.
When I was younger I remember there was a cartoon of the Shoemaker and the Elves. In this version the old shoemaker was very poor, overworked and sick. I remember that it was winter and the old shoemaker and his wife only had a crust of whole wheat bread left to eat. The shoemaker went to eat the bread but saw outside some hungry Snowbirds. Being so kind hearted, the shoemaker gave his last bit of food to them, and went to bed. The Snowbirds turned out to be shoemaking elves and finished making the shoes that were on order. The whole thing shows the elves working and at the end the old couple waking because of the noise the elves were making. The elves escape and the old couple dance with glee that the shoe orders were done. The old shoemaker wonders if the birds had something to do with it and the birds are in a tree, put their elf hats on and say, "Mmmmm, could be!"
I want to say it's a Hanna and Barbera cartoon because I remember seeing it when I watched Tom and Jerry cartoons.
In my notifs the title looked like the history of elves, like in general and I got excited but it's just one specific story. It's my own fault for misreading but I'm still happy to get anything elf related. They're my favorite fantasy creature.

I didn't know any of the the stories. However the story about the shoemaker and the elves reminds me of the story of the kobold Pumuckl popular since the 60s in Germany and probably in the rest of the German speaking world. The story revolves around a lonely Carpenter in whose workshop all of a sudden weird things start to happen. By accident he finds out that it is a tiny redheaded kobold named Pumuckl, who plays tricks on him. So instead of helping the carpenter he his naughty. In time, however a wholesome relationship develops between the two. When I was a child there was a TV series based on the story and I really enjoyed watching the little naughty Pumuckl playing tricks on people and the Carpenter.
I had a dollar bin dvd version of "The Elves & the Shoemaker" as a child. Its so cheap I can't find it online! It even rips off the Muppets Elvis joke.

I feel like Dobby is a bit of a play on it because he (and other) house elves were stuck doing chores all the time and he was freed when presented an article of clothing. This may be a long shot but it fits well in my head
