Western musicians/producers often question why they don't harmonize more. Their harmonies are wonderful but you have to keep in mind, Kpop isn't just music but performance. When they perform live, there's a dance routine with almost every song. Because of that, each member has space between their lines to help with breath control while dancing.

I would say the reason Jungkook (third from the left) has one in-ear out is because in a "live" setting he does the most ad-libs and harmonies and he would have to hear more of "everything" than anyone else. On the whole they do get equal parts or at least try to even it out as much as possible, however, they all know and are aware and are ok with the fact that sometimes a members part might be smaller than the others depending on the song. I realize you are a producer but I think it would be great if you watched one of the documentaries like "This Is BTS" by xCeleste. The third song, Spring Day, has a lot of meaning, for Armys, and for South Koreans in general. There's a lot of emotion in that song, and that's true of a lot of BTS songs, but in particular Spring Day.
It's my personal opinion that the reason BTS does not make use of intense layered harmonies is each man - each voice - is so distinct in personality, and each man tells a slightly different part of the story of each song, allowing an intermixture of successive solos, a weaving of threads, if you will, with minimal harmonies to provide aural texture, allows the story to shine and reach a wide variety of people, rather than pushing only pure music.
I guess my point overall for this comment is that meaning is about 50% of what BTS content is about. I think that's a higher percentage than most other musical groups.

It depends on the song but Jin (the one next to RM sitting on the left side) has less lines. I don't really know why because his voice is just beautiful. He learned sing and dance from 0 in his 21 which I think it's absolutely amazing! Anyway I believe that they know each other really well and when some part doesn't suit one of them, they're okey with it, you know what mean? They're talking about it and I don't think they're mad when some of them have less lines in particular songs. I think Jungkook (JK) has the most lines because he's the main vocalist.

They distribute parts of the song depending on how they want the message conveyed, and this takes precedence over fair line distribution. They’ve always said on interviews it is not an issue among them because they want to deliver the emotions of the song in the best way possible, and each of them have their unique ways of doing that. It seems me that Jin shines more in their Japanese songs because those are more sentimental/emotional ballads. Jungkook is the main vocalist, so he may sing and do adlibs in the background across many of their songs. But all 4 vocalists and 3 rappers are great in singing.

I agree that the extra harmonies would be cool but there is a reason why they don't do this. All 3 of these songs have pretty demanding choreography for live performances. By keeping layered harmonies to a minimum of members, it provides the other members opportunity to conserve and control their breathing. They wouldn't be able to sing constantly and dance for an entire song.

Yes exactly. I am the same in that I would love them to harmonize more because I know they can but the impression that I also get is with having to distribute lines across 7 members, you also want to give them each their own moment to shine without being lost in a chorus. So they harmonize on key parts and in live performances are usually dancing when it's not their part.

I really enjoyed your reaction! I personally think the reason why they don’t do many layered vocals is because almost all of their songs have choreography with it, and sometimes it’s pretty intense.
So if all of them were singing all the time many of the members wouldn’t have time to breath. I think that’s why they don’t go full full out in their vocals because their shows are about a wholistic performance not just singing.
You should react to a live concert to see just all that goes into their performances!

So do consider reacting to making of Soop OST
Some context: BTS did a variety show, BTS in the soop which was basically them going for a vacation to a forest where they were free to do whatever they want and just fun. So member V(Taehyung) was just goofing around and on the spot came up with a tune and some cute lyrics which when member Suga(Yoongi) heard thought had a potential to be the OST for the show.
In the last episode of the show we see the members actually fine tuning the song and actually recording it. Even the recording session is them just having fun while actually recording some great vocals! You should definitely checkout how much effort they put into a 20 second jingle

The more you tried to dig yourself out of that "I didn't know they were singing in English" hole, the deeper you went. 😂 Tip for the future - English proficiency isn't really high on the list of reasons why fans love them and their music. It's a given that they are Korean and will sing and speak in Korean, and if you want to sing along, you sing along in Korean. You need to check out some live concert videos of fans all over the world singing in Korean to really appreciate it:

Oh we sing along the songs alright. And yes, we do memorize them. Even the rap parts/verses. 🤣 i personally could memorize a song in half a day if i'd put my heart into it. Lol
BTS has admitted before in an interview that it's quite hard to be fair(tho they also said they always TRY to be fair) in distributing lines between the members. Some melodies/lines fit others best and some just don't sit right so they have to work around that. In terms of vocals, the main vocalist, Jungkook(violet mic) tends to have more lines(especially in the older songs, even until now sometimes) because he's the main vocalist. But they've all grown so versatile in their craft through the years that the line distribution have actually been fair in most parts. And all they have solo works/songs so they still shine in their own way.
Great reaction btw. First time viewer here. :))

We talk about the production a lot especially as they are so involved in it, they all have had a hand in production on different songs (however Suga and RM have produced the most so far). We talk about the lyrics all the time as well especially for the song they write because they're so deep and meaningful, I wish you could have seen the lyrics for Save me and Spring Day. I hope you've had time to look them up if not Doolset is a great site to get the translations.
The vocals are amazing and in my opinion they all have very very unique vocals, and yes we sing along whether we speak the language or not. (my poor family's ears I really can't sing) .They normally revise the English lines lots, so they're probably just looking at one of the cameras.
They try to distribute the singing lines as equally as possible but still have to allow for who's voice fits a certain part of the song best so in each song it can be slightly different.
Did you see their cover of coldplay's fix you?
BTW they all are the best of friends (or family as we like to think of them) and know each other for between 8-10 years now (it's different for each member, like Jimin joined the last) and have lived together for a long time.
They have a variety show you can watch for free called Run BTS you can see just how close they really are. They also have other programs as well so you get to learn a lot about them that way.
Yeah I think we all realise making songs is super hard otherwise more of us would try it right...I really think it's amazing how much work goes into it. So it always amazes me that Suga can produce a song in one day... it's like dude how? I thought it would take like a month.
So yeah BTS are amazing and sorry for rambling so much!!! 💜

One of the best things about BTS is that all the members have a distinct sound, J-hope and Jimin especially have very unique voices, and collectively they sound so good together.
I sing along to all BTS songs, sadly sometimes I butcher the Korean language but I am learning more and more each day so I'm getting better at it. Sometimes I sing along to most of the song, sometimes I stick to the chorus or hooks, sometimes I stick to the fanchants, and during rap songs I don't try for anything but the English lyrics.

Well Jungkook, third from left is main vocalist and Jimin, furthest to the right is lead vocalist. Usually the amount of lines per member depens on which type of song it is. In rap/hip hop song the rappers tend to have more, and in ballads the singers etc. Then all the rapper can sing, especially Jhope who was supposed to be a vocalist before starting rapping. Jungkook is also a good rapper. Jungkook tends to have the most lines.

They really have their own way of parcelling out their songs to what works best for them as whole. There is definitely "No I in Team" when it comes to BTS!! 💜 The one thing I have noticed recently is that Jungkook has recent begun to be more open and peaking about what being the "main vocalist" has meant to him. How he has viewed himself amd how he has more or less trained himself and has worked out his own way of singing rather than using vocal coaches. I found it fascinating because he was like 15-16 when he started doing this so, to even think about how he has grown and vocally along with the responsibilities of being the main vocalist, and all at such a young age is mind boggling! Thankfully, he was surrounded with so much love and support to be able to grow in a secure environment even when the rest of the world could love you one second then ripping you apart in the blink of an eye and sometimes only because someone likes another member or a different group more. He did become a bit withdrawn the past couple years, but seeing him back on VLive and generally enjoying all of the crazy a bit more than as of late is awesome!!!

All seven members produce or co-produce most of their songs, but RM and Suga do the most producing out of the seven, they've even produced for other artists; Suga won a best producer award for a song her produced for an artist named Suran. The producer for Dynamite was also the writer, David Stewart.
ARMY stands for "Adorable Representative MC for Youth" and it was given to the BTS fanbase by their company, BigHit. BigHit also releases fan-chants for BTS songs. If you watch a live concert performance or one of their Korean music tv shows, you clearly hear the parts that the ARMY shouts or sings along to, either simultaneously or as call-and-response; although a lot of us can sing along with the Korean by ear... we listen to these songs a lot. :p
RM (blue hair), is the only one fluent in English, but the rest can speak some and have gotten a lot better over the years. Suga has said in a Vlive, that he understands a lot more than he can speak.
As far as harmonizing, they DO harmonize often, but not on every song (they have well over 200). Also, MOST of their songs have full choreography which can make it hard for harmonization when they're all dancing their asses off. Jungkook (third from left) is the main vocalist because he seems to have the most consistently stable voice while dancing, but all 4 vocalists, especially in the last few years, have a pretty even line distribution.

You are right about the fluent English speaker. His stage name is RM, real name Kim Namjoon. He taught himself English by watching the sitcom Friends. He is very cool. BTS stands for Bangtan Sonyeondan - Bulletproof Boyscouts. Represents their being resistant to "bullets" thrown at the youth through words and bullying etc. Their symbol being a bulletproof vest. They have outgrown that name now and are more grown up so now stands for Beyond the Scene and their symbol changed to an opening door to represent people who don't stay in their comfort zone but go forward through the door to learn new things and improve themselves. With line distribiution it is hard for group with 7 people but they do good job, but a lot depens on song like if it is more pop or more hip hop or any onther style, in more popish songs rappers will have few lines and vocals will have most of song, and in hip hop heavy songs rappers have more of song. There are songs that are very evenly split. They said in interview that all depens on song and wich members style or voice fits better, that line are given. Also they have solos and unit song so members can have more time, like: rap line songs (3rapers) and vocal line songs (4vocalist). There are also mixed units.
With harmonis you have 4 vocals so if there are live singing together it will most likely 4 voices, but usually they do 2, in few songs there are all singing but it is not that often live (ex. concert, they do what they want there). Also the songs that they use in this kind of shows usually are more focus to show all members "alone"- give everyone a change to shine.
If you liked this there is "Armypedia" mini concert (also 3 songs) that they did like 2 years ago and it is great and also with band, very similar form.
And producion it is great in all they songs, like all songs are masterpieces, but most people don't have knowlage to take all this in and talk about it but fans know that they are great even if they don't know all this behind, thing that go into songs. And they have in house producers that are with them from begining there are line few people that mostly work with them (like 5-6) and there are this from time to time guest producers. And you have 3 producers in band they are also rappers they have credits in almost all songs, and they made a lot of songs for band. Another members try too make some beats etc.
You can watch video "BTS contribiution to music" on your own to see all this info, how they work, proces etc.
Most fans know some lyrics even in Korean or at last some words, but also you have this english parts that you where talking about- so anyone can sing this. And there are also official fanchant things - you got from thier agency befor concerts or music shows to know when to sing and what, so live are fun for everybody.
A.R.M.Y is acronim for Adorable Representative MC for Youth.

They have literally been together for 10 years....going on 11. And by that, I mean they have literally lived together for that long, so their bond and their chemistry is very natural and real. Most of the members have had a hand in production at one point or another, but the rap line (RM - denim jacket, Suga - black jacket, and JHope - in all orange suit) are the ones who produce the most. There's not enough good things to say about Spring Day....it's the Queen, as we say in the fandom....it has never left the charts in Korea since it came out. Worth investigating it's lyrics/meaning. Jungkook - orange jacket/denim pants - is the main vocalist. It sounds like you might enjoy some of the songs that have just the vocal line in them (harmonies)....Try The Truth Untold, House of Cards, Butterfly, Zero O'Clock, or their cover of Jungle for Coca Cola.
