A Visit to the Gravesite of Blues Guitarist Johnny Winter in Easton, Connecticut. Johnny and his brother Edgar Winter were both musicians. Johnny played at Woodstock in 1969.
I visited Duane allmans' grave at Rose Hill with Johnny in 1990. I played "little Martha" on my dobro, Johnny said "sweet". We were sitting on the Tomb playing. Johnny said, "he didn't think he wanted to be covered with 6' of dirt". "Because I might want to get out". He had the biggest most genuine smile. He was my hero.
I first saw Johnny Winter at the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music in June 1970. It was dark and Johnny was dressed in an all white flowing costume and was projected onto large screens. It was an incredible set, the best I've ever seen anywhere. Johnny was the best heavy/Texas blues guitarist of all time. God bless Johnny Winter!
One of my all-time favorite blues guitarist I seen him four times the fourth time it was winter oddly enough and he looked like hell. The band was playing trying to pick him up. It was kind of sad to see him so sick one of my all-time favorites RIP Johnny.
I lucked out and got to see johnny along with Edger, Rick Derringer and kim Simmonds in Tacoma Washington in july 2012. I won the tickets on a radio show. I hadn't even been aware that they were comming to town. Im 67 and J W was the first record album i ever bought which tells you how big a fan I am.
I was with my band at Tampa Stadium, i think it was. We saw all 3 of them together that day. Never to be forgotten show. I just turned 72 and I still play drums and a little guitar. I grew up at a time of the Greatest Music and Musicians. Thanks for this post.
Nothing better than my buddy calling me saying " Get down to My Father's Place NOW , Johnnies playing " He'd show up unannounced all the time . RIP Johnnie .
I saw Johnny play many times, in a bar, in arenas, and with 400,000 others at the 2nd Atlanta Pop Festival. Talked with him once in an airport - just a regular guy. Miss you brother.
Johnny was one of my earliest and most dominant influences on the guitar. I finally got to see him live in St. Louis, MO just after his stroke. He was absolutely amazing that night! RIP Johnny.

At the last show i felt sorry for him the way he walked off the stage . Still played great. One of the best. He will always be remembered. RIP Johnny &. Susan.
I didn't know Johnny Winter was buried in Ct. He was also at the 'jam session' right after Jimi Hendrix's funeral in Seattle, Wa., fall of 1970. My late brother Charlie was there, too, and him and Johnny 'jammed' out on a few tunes!
Thank you for this information. I never knew John Dawson Winter III was buried in Ct. Thats less than an hour from me, so I will take my son one day soon and stop by with a small token, and a prayer. Thanks again, Johnny was one of my true favorites! One of the best shows I saw him play was at the Shaboo Inn , in Willimantic, Ct. People were literally hanging from the rafters, a total crazy fun blowout of a show. I actually met , and talked with Johnny's good friend and bandmate Rick Derringer at Shaboo on another occasion...Oh man, those were the days...

Got to see Johnny at least 50+ times, maybe 60 ??? First time 1970. Johnny Winter And live tour. The last 20 years, I was the guy sitting right in front of him with my camera. The last time I got to watch Johnny play he played with my number one guitar player Alvin Lee to see Alvin Lee and Johnny were on the same stage was insane….Peace brother thank you very much for the memories
The song, "Susie Q" was actually written in 1957 about Susan Lewis, the newborn daughter of Shreveport, Louisiana record store owner, Stan Lewis. It was co-written and recorded by Dale Hawkins in Shreveport at KWKH radio station. Stan Lewis was a first cousin of D.J. Fontana, Elvis Presleys first drummer. D.J. was also a native of Shreveport. They were all members of the Italian-American community of Shreveport at the time.
I saw Johnny Winter 1980 in Los Angeles the bass player broke a string while they were playing Susie Q so Johnny and the drummer just Rift on it until the bass string was replaced
I had older Step Brothers and the very first album I ever had was Johnny Winter second winter.. it's a double album but only three sides have music on it.. I still think it's the best album I have he's an awesome guitar player he played slide with banjo picks on his fingers on a 12-string Electric.. he's the only one I know of that played that way
I got to see Johnny in Memphis 2006. He looked so frail and he had to be pretty much carried on stage and had to sit in a chair. He looked like he weighed less than 80 pounds and I was worried that he wasn't able to perform properly. Boy was I wrong - that boy belted out the blues like a gospel singer!
One of my dad's aunts turned the front room of her house into a record shop back in the 60's & Johnny would come in from time to time looking for old blues records because she had older obscure stuff as well as some contemporary stuff. She said Johnny would hold the record covers real close to his face trying to read the liner notes because his eyesight was so poor. I bought his first release as a twelve year old when he got the huge Columbia Records deal & other kids couldn't understand why I liked that blues stuff.
I rode my Harley from New York to the gravesite didn’t know where it was just turned the bike down the street and up the hill in the back listening to Highway 61. When I get to the top of the little hill I stop and put my kickstand down turn the breaker off look down and it’s right there next to me I could’ve gone in the other entrance but somehow I didn’t and then to have it right there when I got off the bike I knew it was Johnny pulling me in.
Why is Johnny buried in Connecticut and not Texas? I saw him at least 3 times in his career from the 1970s on. He was one of the greatest guitarist who ever lived.
It must have been great to hear Johnny live. Why Connecticut? I made a video to answer that. czcams.com/video/I19iOSXh7ow/video.htmlsi=HOF_oEPZdu0PSQul
Ghost hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren said Union Cemetery is the most haunted cemetery in New England. They have on video an apparition of the the Lady in White who's been seen many times there. Now, Johnny Winter is buried there. I hope we get to see him play guitar again. Johnny, we miss you.
I've been there before Susan passed... It was only Johnny buried. Haunted Cemetery. They lived 5 minutes away on Tranquility Drive. I left a guitar pic at his grave. I carried that pic for 25 years... I have pictures....
I finally got to visit Johnny at his final resting place. It was a bit surreal, the cemetery didn't seem worthy of this legend. The grass wasn't mowed, stones degrading and falling over, kind of depressing.
My favourite guitarist to listen to in my youth and adolescence. Just listen to "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Sweet Papa John" on his "Captured Live" album and you'll see why. Anyone knows what caused his death?
@@Foxglove963 I get why that person left the pick, he probably started learning after he listened Johnny play, or something, that's tottaly a thing I would do as well, just a form of paying respect from one guitar player to a guitar god, i guess.
Big fan since I was a little kid. Johnny is a Legend and his music/singing will be enjoyed forever.

Sorry but Susie Q was written in 1957,had nothing to do with Winters wife.
Dale Hawkins
Haha, I was gonna say that too 😅 That man put 2 and 2 together and made 5 haha !
He didn't say Johnny wrote the song.
He only meant that maybe that was Johnny's affection for the song, not that he wrote it.
I saw Johnny Winter 1980 in Los Angeles the bass player broke a string while they were playing Susie Q so Johnny and the drummer just Rift on it until the bass string was replaced
he was the best!
I had older Step Brothers and the very first album I ever had was Johnny Winter second winter.. it's a double album but only three sides have music on it..
I still think it's the best album I have he's an awesome guitar player he played slide with banjo picks on his fingers on a 12-string Electric.. he's the only one I know of that played that way
never knew about 3 side albums
@@variousvisfineart one side is blank on one of the disks.
Johnny used a thumbpick because of Chet Atkins. I doubt he used fingerpicks. That Fender twelve string only had six strings on it.
My guitar 🎸 hero for ever best dam guitar slider.pro till the end of time.dearly miss.🌠🎶
I'm a big SRV fan, but Johnny was playing fantastic blues guitar years before, they were unbelievable talents
Easton, CT is my hometown.
I got to see Johnny in Memphis 2006. He looked so frail and he had to be pretty much carried on stage and had to sit in a chair. He looked like he weighed less than 80 pounds and I was worried that he wasn't able to perform properly. Boy was I wrong - that boy belted out the blues like a gospel singer!
music as power
Been there several times. I am a big fan.
Thanks. He has lots of fans.it is right off the highway.
Wow that is interesting to hear about those memories.
Saw him when he was an opening act and he usually destroyed the headliners
I never got to see him live.
I didn't know his wife passed away.
Amazing story. Glad you got to visit Easton.
why is Johnny buried in friggin' Connecticut ? He was a Texan, his entire life. One of the greats, without question.
Maybe Johnny can blast those ghosts away with his guitar.
@@variousvisfineart- I know they'll be dancing in the aisles!
Then, I don't believe his resting place is a coincidence...an insider once told me, Edgar & his wife were into cats & Johnny was into ghosts.

GHOST BUSKER❗👻❗
RIP miss you 4ever /Sweden
I've been there before Susan passed... It was only Johnny buried. Haunted Cemetery. They lived 5 minutes away on Tranquility Drive. I left a guitar pic at his grave.
I carried that pic for 25 years... I have pictures....
I was wondering where they lived. Thanks.
RIP Johnny and Susan.
Johnny winter was a musician. His brother Edgar…..still is a musician. He’s still alive , 74 I believe.
I finally got to visit Johnny at his final resting place. It was a bit surreal, the cemetery didn't seem worthy of this legend. The grass wasn't mowed, stones degrading and falling over, kind of depressing.
Yes, several people agree that the monument and gravesite is less than he deserves.
@RDS Yes, now that you mention it there is a legend of a ghost in the cemetery known as "the Lady in White."
My favourite guitarist to listen to in my youth and adolescence. Just listen to "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Sweet Papa John" on his "Captured Live" album and you'll see why. Anyone knows what caused his death?
My King!
L.S..D. equals ten years less, keep working Johnny!
I can t believe there is no guitar on the grave.
Greg Mccurry. There's a flat Fender pick, a type he did not use. RIP Johnny Great Artist with the guitar.
Right. I saw that Fender pick and thought, "that is a nice thought, but he did not use that kind of pick."
@@Foxglove963 I get why that person left the pick, he probably started learning after he listened Johnny play, or something, that's tottaly a thing I would do as well, just a form of paying respect from one guitar player to a guitar god, i guess.
Would have thought he would be buried by Highway 61.
