  • Within the next few years there will be a Holocaust museum or education centre in every state and territory in Australia. The motivations for this are many, but often focus on the role of Holocaust education in learning from the past to inform a more peaceful and cohesive future. Within the context of the passing of the survivor generation, and the contemporary rise in antisemitism and racism, what is the future for Holocaust education in Australia? Dr Steven Cooke has over 30 years’ experience in the cultural heritage sector across both museums and academia. His exceptional work has led the Australian Government to appoint him to the Australian delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, where he represents Australia on the Memorials and Museums Working Group. From 2002 until 2011 Steven held leadership positions at some of Australia’s most significant cultural heritage sites, including the Shrine of Remembrance. From there, he transitioned into academia where he worked at Deakin University as an Associate Professor and Course Director for the Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies postgraduate programs, helping inspire the next generation of museum professionals. In 2020 he was the lead investigator on the landmark Gandel Holocaust Knowledge and Awareness in Australia Survey. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
