Lifting your boat off of your trailer [EP 102] Catalina 22

- In this video, I show you how to lift your small boat off of your trailer. Sometimes we need to do this to make repairs. All you need is some wood blocks and a hydraulic jack. Boat stanchions/jacks are also recommended, but not required. This is a way, not the only way. It's just the way I did it. Disclaimer: This is just a way, I hold no responsibility and I am not liable for what every you decide to do. As always, be safe and make smart decisions.

A great video....thank you,Sir🇨🇦
You are welcome. Thank you for the comment.
Lucky that cross beam never snapped. Even a beam that size without knots in it was risky. Glad you never had a catastrophe
The boat only weighs 2300 lbs. I’m sure the beam can handle 1,200 lbs or more. Thank you for taking the time to comment. That was my only scary part about this project. And smashing my finger.
Playing Jenga on steroids!
Thank you very much for this demonstration! I've been wondering how I was gonna get to all areas of my boat bottoms that need scraping, sanding, re-glassing, & painting.
It's now time to start searching for some stands, beams, and blocks!
You are very welcome. Thank you very much for taking the time to thank me. Every subscriber like, and comment helps my channel.
Slick Ric!
Thank you
I really appreciate your CZcams and some of the others that have done this. It scares me, but I got to drop my swing keel and completely service it and the associated hardware. Do boat yards "rent" the jack stands? I want to make sure there is no way my boat can tip, slip, or fall. I have never done anything like what you have done and want to make sure I don't screw up! Thank you so very much.
They may rent them. My local boatyard does not. You might have a better chance in the fall when there are less boats in the yard. If you watch my video, you will see I have 5 stands. I did not want the boat to fall me either. I recommend using the beam method like I did to get it off of the trailer. Just go slow and have someone there to give you a second pair of eyes or watch over you. I Purchased a motorcycle jack from Harbor freight and built a wooden cradle to lift the Q up and down. It weighs 550 pounds. Make sure to order the shim kit and a new cable as well. You can do it.
How high did you raise the stern? My trailer is pretty low even with the tongue in the dirt. Great video!
36”. Thank you for your comment.
Very interesting video! How long is this boat? I am very interested in seeing you change the swing keel bushings if you plan on filming that. I have a 1974 Irwin 28 Mk III that has a swing keel and I would imagine that they are similar in design. I would also love to see how the keel winch is installed in your boat. The winch was removed before I acquired my boat and of course there is no documentation to show how it works. Thanks again for your great videos!
Thank you for taking the time to comment. My boat is a 22 foot Catalina. It has a swing keel and a pop top. I will be showing the process of replacing the bushings and saddles. Hopefully next video or two. Thanks again.
@@SailingtheWestWind Ahh My mistake. I could have sworn you said it was an Irwin Mk III. Great video just the same.
@@martyb3783 I have two boats. The first is a 1979 Irwin mark III sailboat. Its a 37 foot two mast match. The second is a 22 foot Catalina. The Catalina has the swing keel.
@@SailingtheWestWind Gotcha. Sorry for the confusion.
@@martyb3783 all good. More to come
Lately I have been putting a wedge under the bow to reduce the rolling of the beam. That has always been a concern to me.
Thank you. I appreciate you taking time to make a comment. I think I’m going to put some two by fours on the sides like you did also. I have two more jackstands coming as well. I’m getting ready to pull in the swing keel and redo the pin and bushings
Where do we get the Jack Stands for our Catalinas?
Unfortunately, I paid full price. I bought them from West Marine. Every once in a while, you can find them on Facebook, but every time I himm and haw about the purchase, they are gone the next day. I purchased the one for power boats which are lower to the ground. I have taller ones for a bigger Sailboat. Hopefully this helps you out.
@@SailingtheWestWind I saw some on Craigslist but they had been bent and "repaired" due to the previous owner's overload. I passed.
I dont know much aboit boats, but to me it looks risky
Thank you for your comment. Do some research, lots of people do it. Very common.

Not sure what that means but I appreciate your took the time to comment. Thank you.
