The photo additions (especially of the water fall) were such good add-ons. That pink drink was really pretty, but when you were talking about the bill at the restaurant I think that would make me forget a bunch of the rest of the experience, too.
It would be great if there was a prepay thing where you prepay for your food, and any extra drinks you pay for as they come. So that there's no surprises.
I've never travelled solo, I'm too much of an introvert with a deep fear of getting lost, so I have a great admiration for people who do. Your adventures are fascinating to me.
As a french person, I just laughed at the sausage line 😂. I love both of your current channels. I stumbled upon your tutorials first when I wanted to learn embroidery. I'm convinced that's one of the main evolutionary reasons for sitting around a campfire late at night. You start trading stories and realize that sometimes your life isn't ALL grindingly dull day in and day out but is, in fact, sometimes quite magical! That one hair, though. THAT ONE HAIR. We have sandwich bread/cake here in Sweden too 😋. We do make macaroni with milk, thickened with flour, but we don’t eat it for breakfast. Maybe it’s not the same thing. Stewed macaronis 😋. I haven’t had either of them in years! Now I’m drooling over them 😋🤣
My friend and I were personal chefs for an Islandic employer. Lots and lots of dairy-based meals. We found Skyr in a German deli for her. We got fish off the boats at the Fisherman's Terminal docks, but I couldn't get any whale meat for her. She was really disappointed that we couldn't legally obtain it.

(Danes will not be offended by the thought of selling sausage to France, it's more like a compliment) That many ears ago, I'm sure the waiter at Apotek just thought you were enjoying some introspective relaxation after your meal - they did not think it was weird to sit a bit and they had no reason to rush you (their wages come from the restaurant, they do not depend on tips or comission from turning over tables as fast as possible) I remember thinking all the work-aways I met were really cool and brave for doing the solo thing... Glad to hear you have some good memories of my country, hope you visit again as a more seasoned traveller!

I loved hearing about your treck into middle earth. Your storytelling is magical. Your waiting for the check story made me think of a recent trip CA. The service at the restaurants at a resort I was at was so slow. We had to track down the waiter long after our dishes had been cleared away in order to get the bill. During that trip, I started to realize that they were never going to ask if we were ready for the bill and I just needed to ask for it once we were done eating.
6:24 I believe that is called Lefsa! My husband's family is Norwegian in origin and that sounds very much like the Lefsa they make. It's actually made with potato dough! I'm going to assume that the Icelandic version is very similar.
Thanks for sharing your Iceland story! That hike to the waterfall does look straight out of LOTR. Wow! We have a lot of pretty waterfalls in New York's Finger Lakes region. Always worth the hikes to get to them. 😊 My 1st time trying yogurt of any kind was when I was 11, on our first trip to visit family in Switzerland. We stayed with my great Uncle (grandpa's brother) & aunt, & every morning had yogurt. Peach yogurt. I hated peaches. But I had to politely suffer through it. At least the morning bread & butter, & milk was delicious.
I have a whale meat story as well. I used to live in an area where whale, walrus, and seal were a regular part of the local diet. So I’ve had them all. One time a coworker had frozen whale skin and fat for a snack. He wanted it to be not frozen, so he microwaved it. The scorched burning flesh smell was awful. I don’t know why it happened that particular time, but it ruined most mammal sea creature flesh for me. From that episode, I knew I wasn’t going to stay in that village long term. It kinda broke my brain somehow. 🤷♀️
Silk's soy milk yogurt is yummy to me, who has texture issues. My favorite flavor is strawberry and sometimes their mango. Being allergic to dairy in adulthood is bad when you realize so many nostalgic things are milk based
My step grandma would make those pancake rolls. She was from Ukraine and she called them blinchikies (that's the phonetic spelling don't come after me). Me and my siblings would gobble those things down like our lives depended on it
Maybe your mom didn't trust mayonnaise not to spoil the minute it was out of the fridge and give you all food poisoning? I remember that being a thing when I was younger, "never trust mayo-based 'salads' or sandwiches at picnics, because they've been sitting out in the sun and you will get salmonella!"
alright, the "stranded on a rock" story sounds scary. The creek and waterfall place looks awesome, my thoughts went immediately to the specific conditions that allowed water erosion to create that, it's just fascinating!
I delayed watching for fear of my current perpetual state of nausea getting upset but the food ick wasn't so bad (the worst was the sandwich cake) and the story was well worth it. I especially love the waterfall in the ravine bit. I'm curious, did the chef in the ravine expect payment and/or did you pay them? It's such a different experience than I would ever expect to have, but also so neat.
Ohhh, as a kid I had "Milchnudeln" (literally milk noodles) a lot. It was a stable for kids in Germany, but I don't think it is so much anymore. But it tastes so good!

I mainly remember the waterfalls, small plants in a wasteland that just made you so happy to find life, hot baths in every village, crystal clear water and swimming in both the original and the new Blue Lagoon (very different experiences).
Oh my goodness what an adventure. Isn't it annoying that you can't get certain types of food in your own country. I understand specialist foods, but I would have thought rye bread with no carraway or your favourite yogurt which we get in the UK is doable. Why don't you make it yourself ( the bread that is). Great memories and amazing scenery. I used to go off with the dog into a Dell (with fairies of course) and sit by a waterfall called horses tail . Rarely see anyone. I am 12 up a hillside in Scotland. No where near a tourist track. We are invincible when we are young and life was simpler. Thank you for the memories.
I am an artist, (painter if you get specific) and I just love the trip photos in your past videos and also this one. So gorgeous! When a photo can make me look at it for a few secs and say to myself, "wow I would love to paint that", it's an amazing photo of something beautiful.
My son did the Puffin Rescue in Iceland last year and travelled around a bit. He sent some photos of some of those amaxing waterfalls and the Northern Lights. Didn't mention eating whale though.😂
You mentioned the mayonnaise cake, and I immediately though of a fairly simmilar thing we have in Brazil called "torta fria". Maybe Matheus has had that at somepoint... it was a very common thing in birthday parties in the 90's.

Yes, agriculturalist is a word, as someone studying farmers. But it’s antiquated and quirky. It somewhat elevates farmers from an image of subsistence to profession maybe, in some contexts. ❤
My only experience of Iceland is queueing at the airport (and I did buy a thing of skyr there for the plane and wholeheartedly agree, that brand is The Best) so thanks for letting us live vicariously through your adventure x
Oh boy! Have you ever tried making a grilled cheese with mayo? (Real mayo, NOT salad dressing bullcrap) I prefer it over butter on the grilling side of the sandwich. Highly recommend!

I don't even go to restaurants that rarely, just always with my dad because I have neither the interest nor the budget for such things, so I know how they work, but it was still stressful to be the one responsible. Also, I tried skyr once and I absolutely hated it
Seriously, you can make so good sandwich cakes, like salmon is so good in it ❤ We had it with every birthday when I was younger. I live in Finland ❤ You can go easy with the mayonaise or use something else intead/mixed with it and only the sky is limit with what you put inside one 🤩
I do think with less condiment and more filling, I'd totally be into it! I'm such a complicated sandwich lover though - I kept trying to make these massive sandwiches for the kids I stayed with in Iceland, and they were so annoyed by it cause they just wanted cheese on white bread. XD

The easiest for me to follow (cuz I don't do metric well) was one from King Arthur Baking Company. You need to take a link to their website for exact measurements. No caraway! You up for a baking challenge? (Actually didn't look difficult at all.) If you make it, could you take us along for the adventure?
Sandwichon, which is a three or four layer sandwich loaf cake, usually chicken salad, egg salad, ham salad and similar things, is ridiculously popular in northern Mexico and along the border in the US. That and tres leches cake appear at every family gathering or potluck party. It is not what anybody would recognize as authentic Mexican food. And yet, there it is.
That's so cool! Indeed, I've never heard of a sandwich cake from Mexico - it's fascinating how much more complex a countries food usually is than what people outside of it know.
If there is a club for people who found yogurt boring and loathe anisole/carvone (anise, caraway, fennel) please send membership forthwith. I still struggle with yogurt but I keep trying, homemade superfatted whole milk is the most tolerable.

Farmers don't grow different kinds of apples for creativity. It's about diversity! Some apples have early fruits, others have them later in the year. Some can be stored for many months, others can't. There are diseases and pests that harm some apple trees more than others. And some trees can stand cold, heat, wind, floods or droughts better than others. The consequences of global warming and climate change can destroy a whole harvest, every year in a different way: bugs, fungi, hail, no rain, too much rain,... So it is mandatory to grow different kinds of apples in order to survive. Whales aren't fish, they are mammals, so of course they taste like meat, not like fish. As a former waitress and daughter of a gastronome I have learned that in Germany (and I think in most European countries too) you may not ask the customers if they want the check. You may not ask if they want another drink, either. You may remove the plates from the table (but only when the cutlery is in the 4:20 position on all of the plates or the customers ask you to do it) but not the empty glasses. You only remove the glasses when they have ordered another round and you bring that to the table, then you remove the old glasses. But the last glasses stay on the table until the guests leave. And in the beginning you wait for all the customers at the table to close their menus before you ask for their orders. Being a waitress is really a hard job because you have to look for all those signs.
I loved Iceland, my cousin and I drove around Iceland and bought groceries and snacks at local stores. My cousin is a picky eater, she ate hamburgers for every dinner. One of my favorite places was the glacial lagoon with icebergs. I found the food fresh and interesting, but I like fish. Cant wait to go back!
I’ve noticed that Brits tend to say “sicth” instead of fighting with that “-xth” sound, and it feels a little like a cop out 😂 But then again, Americans don’t have to say “sixth form” on a regular basis, so maybe we just didn’t have the need?

I live in Iceland, and the Skyr you get anywhere else is NOT THE SAME. it just is not the same thing so you will never get it the same texture or taste.
Not all of Ohio is flat. I'm in southwest Ohio. We have lots of rolling hills, lots of very pretty places, especially in the fall. Lots of southeastern Ohio is in the Appalachian foothills. My daughter attended college in a small town in about 3 hours north of here and it was so flat, I don't think there was even a ditch!
Wait... in America the waitresses/waiters ask you if you want to have the check or bill or whatever it's called? o.o It's funny how weird something sounds if you've grown up with the opposite. :D In Germany we ask for the bill ourselves too. No waiter/waitress has ever asked me. :D
Yes! When I was a server, we were taught to drop the bill on the table within 10 minutes of serving the entrees at lunch, because it's so assumed that everyone is in a hurry and just wants to pay and leave. I definitely prefer it the European way after getting used to it.

Just got back from a cruise to Iceland and Greenland and tried whale and seal and all sorts of fish, raw, smoked.... all of it edible, even if odd. But the weirdest was the fermented shark in Reykjavik, I didn't try it but my partner did... not good by the looks on his face😅🤢
Distraught Swede here; smörgåstårta should have as much care and thougth put into it as a nice layer cake! What were the icelandic people doing! Most people in sweden buy from shops instead of making their own, as they are A Process to make. A proper smörgåstårta should be like a deli sandwich on steroids. Sandwich cake is the most proper I think; 'smörgås' means sandwich and a 'tårta' is any layered and filled cake.
Hej, don't judge everyone in iceland based on how a few farmers in a small community in the middle of the flatlands chose to make brauðterta! It is, as you say, more like a luxury sandwich elevated to art - when it's done right! And nobody with any selfrespect would buy it from a shop, anymore than a swede would buy frosen kjötbuller...
Blueberries SHOULD be a food I adore. But I can't stand them. The texture of the leaf-whatever things at the base of the stem, the INCREDIBLE variance of whether any given berry will be overly sweet (I like tart), the different "resistance" of different berries' skin as you bite down on them, differing textures of the interior of the berry, and GOOD GOD the seeds. I have yet to be starving enough to put a single blueberry into my mouth for the past 20 years. Baked goods don't help - I can't deal with the texture of mushy fruit in muffins or cakes or pies.* *apple is the exception, for pies & for *some* other baked goods. Anyway. Blueberries. Wish I liked them, but nope, I despise them. (and I now understand myself to be autistic - blueberries and a *lot* of other food-texture things are one small part of how I identified that)

That was my guess, too, since mayonnaise is frequently made with eggs and the Salmonella Scare was centered around raw chicken and raw eggs.

Seriously, you can make so good sandwich cakes, like salmon is so good in it ❤ We had it with every birthday when I was younger. I live in Finland ❤ You can go easy with the mayonaise or use something else intead/mixed with it and only the sky is limit with what you put inside one 🤩
I do think with less condiment and more filling, I'd totally be into it! I'm such a complicated sandwich lover though - I kept trying to make these massive sandwiches for the kids I stayed with in Iceland, and they were so annoyed by it cause they just wanted cheese on white bread. XD

Sandwichon, which is a three or four layer sandwich loaf cake, usually chicken salad, egg salad, ham salad and similar things, is ridiculously popular in northern Mexico and along the border in the US. That and tres leches cake appear at every family gathering or potluck party. It is not what anybody would recognize as authentic Mexican food. And yet, there it is.
That's so cool! Indeed, I've never heard of a sandwich cake from Mexico - it's fascinating how much more complex a countries food usually is than what people outside of it know.
If there is a club for people who found yogurt boring and loathe anisole/carvone (anise, caraway, fennel) please send membership forthwith. I still struggle with yogurt but I keep trying, homemade superfatted whole milk is the most tolerable.

Farmers don't grow different kinds of apples for creativity. It's about diversity! Some apples have early fruits, others have them later in the year. Some can be stored for many months, others can't. There are diseases and pests that harm some apple trees more than others. And some trees can stand cold, heat, wind, floods or droughts better than others. The consequences of global warming and climate change can destroy a whole harvest, every year in a different way: bugs, fungi, hail, no rain, too much rain,... So it is mandatory to grow different kinds of apples in order to survive.

As a former waitress and daughter of a gastronome I have learned that in Germany (and I think in most European countries too) you may not ask the customers if they want the check. You may not ask if they want another drink, either. You may remove the plates from the table (but only when the cutlery is in the 4:20 position on all of the plates or the customers ask you to do it) but not the empty glasses. You only remove the glasses when they have ordered another round and you bring that to the table, then you remove the old glasses. But the last glasses stay on the table until the guests leave. And in the beginning you wait for all the customers at the table to close their menus before you ask for their orders. Being a waitress is really a hard job because you have to look for all those signs.

I loved Iceland, my cousin and I drove around Iceland and bought groceries and snacks at local stores. My cousin is a picky eater, she ate hamburgers for every dinner. One of my favorite places was the glacial lagoon with icebergs. I found the food fresh and interesting, but I like fish. Cant wait to go back!

I’ve noticed that Brits tend to say “sicth” instead of fighting with that “-xth” sound, and it feels a little like a cop out 😂 But then again, Americans don’t have to say “sixth form” on a regular basis, so maybe we just didn’t have the need?

Not all of Ohio is flat. I'm in southwest Ohio. We have lots of rolling hills, lots of very pretty places, especially in the fall. Lots of southeastern Ohio is in the Appalachian foothills. My daughter attended college in a small town in about 3 hours north of here and it was so flat, I don't think there was even a ditch!
After being associated with a “skibbidi toilet,” Ohio is no longer offended by much.

It's funny how weird something sounds if you've grown up with the opposite. :D In Germany we ask for the bill ourselves too. No waiter/waitress has ever asked me. :D
Yes! When I was a server, we were taught to drop the bill on the table within 10 minutes of serving the entrees at lunch, because it's so assumed that everyone is in a hurry and just wants to pay and leave. I definitely prefer it the European way after getting used to it.

Just got back from a cruise to Iceland and Greenland and tried whale and seal and all sorts of fish, raw, smoked.... all of it edible, even if odd. But the weirdest was the fermented shark in Reykjavik, I didn't try it but my partner did... not good by the looks on his face😅🤢

Distraught Swede here; smörgåstårta should have as much care and thougth put into it as a nice layer cake! What were the icelandic people doing! Most people in sweden buy from shops instead of making their own, as they are A Process to make. A proper smörgåstårta should be like a deli sandwich on steroids.
Sandwich cake is the most proper I think; 'smörgås' means sandwich and a 'tårta' is any layered and filled cake.
Hej, don't judge everyone in iceland based on how a few farmers in a small community in the middle of the flatlands chose to make brauðterta! It is, as you say, more like a luxury sandwich elevated to art - when it's done right! And nobody with any selfrespect would buy it from a shop, anymore than a swede would buy frosen kjötbuller...

Blueberries SHOULD be a food I adore.
But I can't stand them.
The texture of the leaf-whatever things at the base of the stem, the INCREDIBLE variance of whether any given berry will be overly sweet (I like tart), the different "resistance" of different berries' skin as you bite down on them, differing textures of the interior of the berry, and GOOD GOD the seeds.
I have yet to be starving enough to put a single blueberry into my mouth for the past 20 years.
Baked goods don't help - I can't deal with the texture of mushy fruit in muffins or cakes or pies.*
*apple is the exception, for pies & for *some* other baked goods.
Anyway.
Blueberries.
Wish I liked them, but nope, I despise them.
(and I now understand myself to be autistic - blueberries and a *lot* of other food-texture things are one small part of how I identified that)
