My favorite way to play this without the drums is in handheld with the onscreen drum! I think that has the perfect mixture of accuracy and the “feeling” of hitting the drum.
It's definitely the better option, when you don't have a drum controller. Using the Joycons is kinda weird and movement can be a pain, if not done correctly. And you are hitting the air, which doesn't give the response of hitting a drum. So stopping your movement, takes more time while doing combos. But at least this feature has been included, for those who can't afford the controller or don't want to use the touchscreen.
The motion gestures are highly inaccurate, while the buttons are just confusing. The only proper way to play this game is by importing the taiko drum set. It's too much of an investment and a hassle, though. Only die-hard fans need apply.

While selecting the song, there is no motion control option to choose. The only option available is using the buttons. Does this happen to anyone else? I want to use the motion control :/

Kaiser GX I think they work good enough, it’s just the matter of getting used to it I think. I see people use motion controls to beat oni level (the hardest level) easily.

Also I always buy game cards because I can swap games with my friends to try out new games as well as selling/trading the cards with irl shop. If you are not doing things I mentioned above, I don’t think buying it online or importing it makes any difference.
Since the taiko franchise has not been released to America, it is unclear when it will be released in other countries. However, the digital version in the Japanese e-shop officially states that it supports Japanese, English, Korean and Chinese. I recommend you to buy one from Japanese e-shop as it will display the language based on your switch's settings.
Just got the game on Switch and didn't realize I needed to rotate the joy cons 90 degrees, that should do the trick. Also, you can configure input latency in the settings, so now all thats left is figuring out the best way for the game to identify strokes that are too fast or slow, which should all be in the accelerometer, so I guess it just takes getting used to.
just got the game and tried the joycon and no it's not the same motion. Reds are your usually drum hit but for Blues you have to do this swift gesture to the side and it's very awkward. It's not the most ideal way to play the game...you're better off investing in the drum controller.

hitting the blue ones with joycon control is hard af... hope they can patch this
There's a character you can play that makes it so no matter what color all you need to do is strike the drums to register it as a hit

There's a setting in the menu that let's hold the L or R buttons down while swinging to do the blue ones instead of doing the whole motion

Try holding the blue (left joycon) at a 45 degree angle. You are meant to mimic hitting the side of the "drum".

kingddd You can also hold L or R and it makes all of your swings into blue notes. Makes the motion controls a lot better.
