      I watched a video about apm years and years ago. The guy I forgot who it was basically said don’t spam get really good at timing and don’t waste that apm. I now sit comfortably at 75 apm as an average and I beat people well into the 2-300 range daily. My movements are just doing more with less if that makes sense. Holding shift to que movements/buildings/attacks is my favorite. I don’t waste 50 apm moving a scv probe or drone.

    As a Broodwar player since 1998, I retrained my APM at a certain point. I was getting around 300 APM with my Zerg play, and realized that a lot of my clicks and commands were indeed superfluous. I intentionally forced myself to play as slow as possible, only using commands when totally necessary. At first it was a slog and difficult, but over time I was able to bring my APM back up to 180, except now there are no wasted clicks or actions. My real APM is now 180 and goes up to 200 during large engagements. Having done this, I'm better at BW now at 33 than I was at 16. When all of your actions are efficient and necessary, a lot gets done. And when you get up to 180 with no superfluous actions, the way you look at the game totally changes.

    yeah you are right alot of the APMS when you are talking about 600 APM or 500 APM or 400 APM are probably redundant or race inflated (zerg larva selection etc) but from 50 all the way to 300 APMs is very very relevant for player speed and to be able to multi task. SC2 suffers from look away for one moment and lose all your worker syndrome. Pros program in camera locations and pull their worker immediately for example. Effective APMS are more important than total APMS but APM is still important. It isn't always make or break like with an FPS but it sure can come close with marine micro/splits and stuff like that

    High APM is a result of having control groups created, when you press 1 2 3 or 4 it corresponds with buildings, and you can produce units from your buildings while fighting your opponent on two different fronts, all while expanding your base, so since there is so much going on, their ARM will be high, somtimes they spam select or just look over their building production as a habit, it might be deemed as useless but realistically it is habit, awareness and production.

    A lot of the mass input spamming is to ensure a command goes through at the earliest possible frame. Since the game has basically no input buffer, any form of lag or mistiming on the exact frame makes the cooldown effectively longer.
    i.e mistiming a 1 second cooldown by 1 frame 60 times makes you have 1 less cast of that ability)

    • @Varuga
      @Varuga Před rokem

      Most pro level gamers use rapid fire for creep spread, unit production (Especially for zerg and protoss), etc in SC2. It is the main reason why APM gets inflated and gives the notion that they are spamming. Rapid-fire can push up to 1000APM or more depending on the settings.
      Most of the time, pros are spamming in the beginning of the game to warm up their hands and get in the groove if you will. Moving screens around and spamming clicks, etc.
      During engagements you rarely see them just spamming one hot key to get a spell out.

    I remember a noticeable climb in my own skill when I forced myself to play faster than I was comfortable with, basically on the verge of making many small mistakes, but eventually I got more and more comfortable with the pace.
    I’m of the idea that having 10 actions where 6 are useless are better than 3 actions. Maths lol.
    Still it’s better to focus on the basics in the beginning rather than speed. If you’re in low diamond with 400 APM then you should probably try and figure out what you’re doing wrong.

    • @majormononoke8958
      @majormononoke8958 Před 11 měsíci

      Why would you have 400 apm? To high apm is literally bad for your health, even dumber when you realize that 99.99 procent of players will never reach a level that 400apm would give them a benefit. Even if we assume that they are doing the good apm and not just spamming keys to inflate their ego. But forcing you to play faster, really can increase your apm for sure.

    • @CyRxJustin
      @CyRxJustin Před 9 měsíci +1

      I experienced the exact opposite. I was watching Day9 play one time and I noticed that even though he was doing more than I was on the screen, he seemed so chill and deliberate while I felt stressed and sloppy.
      I forced myself to try to slow down and try to get 1 action = 1 command instead of spamming right click six times to tell a unit to move. Focused on accuracy instead of speed, and I had a huge spike in rank. When I was spamming commands, my average APM was around 250 and there was no spare time to add more stuff to do. When I slowed down, things were less chaotic and I had more time to dedicate to more multitasking.
      Now, I hover around 180 APM on average and I feel so much more in control.

  • @Entropic0
    @Entropic0 Před rokem +6

    I don't think this is accurate. APM is a proxy for reaction speed. Reaction speed is extremely important and tightly correlated with performance in SC2. APM is spammed so that you can learn to do basic actions in the game as fast as possible, such as switching hotkeys or selecting units. This "spam" is not useless as it trains your ability to perform these actions rapidly, which decreases your reaction latency. Milliseconds matter in SC2 -- they are the difference between a baneling connecting or being focus-fired. Someone with reliably lower action latency will be netting higher yields in every macro and micro action they take, which adds up all game long. Eventually their lead is exponential, they are so far ahead that the lead in and of itself causes a larger lead, which is where they've won the game.

    @stevenlarson3316 Před 9 měsíci

    There's a lot of stuff to get done later in the game. And even early in the game if you're microing units, duplicated clicks are often very necessary against a skilled opponent because you have to change your unit's movement in response to your opponent in order to gain the upper hand. Example, try microing reapers without duplicating clicks. Or microing your workers against said reapers.

    Also in counterstrike stutterstepping when holding angles so if someone peeks, you are a moving target. Does anyone have any advice for control groups? I've played this game 20 years and I understand the more I play, the faster I get. I just don't know control groups to save my life. When hell breaks lose I just use tilda key for all my zerg units and lose half of them to running across the map. It's terrible but I'm dumbfounded how to control my army units

    You said, pro's don't need high apm... then literally define why pros have high apm and why it is useful... thats very counter intuitive.
    EDIT: I forgot to mention, its rythem based, which is what your trying to say. Unfortunately that isn't what is conveyed.

    See this game gives the player the freedom to control a lot of things at the same time, unlike other games. If a player wants to adapt to this multi tasking themed game, they need to develop high apm. But APM isn't everything, a person watching your screen will be more impressed by macro, micro decisions not seeing all the crazy APM happening.

    I support your channel for the most part but this is straight up wrong - yes some pros waste apm superfluously but the top players truly do make every movement count. There’s a reason why there’s only 2-3 GMs with APM less than 200 on the NA server. Micro makes a difference

    • @EsportsStoryteller
      @EsportsStoryteller  Před rokem +9

      Well, there's one important distinction to be made - StarCraft 2 counts both APM and EAPM, where the latter refers to "Effective Actions Per Minute" and it doesn't count any repetitve actions. EAPM is around the same for most pros - it ranges from 120-200, and it's indeed a crucial factor for success. As for APM, the range here is even bigger - from 100 to 400 and even 600-700 with rapid fire commands. A player with 150 APM with 120 EAPM can outplay a player with 300 APM and 120 EAPM. It's often the case between Protoss and Zerg, the latter usually have more APM than other races due to the specifics of how their larva economy works.

      @@St4lkerBR It's one group of units moving, so it counts as one action. It sounds crazy that they have 500+ APM but they actually do. If what you say was true, once players have a big army simply moving them around would make probably make that number go in the thousands easily.

      @@St4lkerBR I don't know if you're mixing the APM counter with how the game will calculate the pathing of every units when you give a move command to them. I don't know how this work honestly, I guess it cheats in many ways to be efficient and not melt CPUs but still has to define where everyone needs to go because units have collisions and stuff but the APM counter will only register those 10 clicks as a single action each time.
      You can check it out easily, start a game and use a metronome. Grab a worker and move it around on rythm... leave the game and check the APM in the replay.
