Wow!!!! I can't believe the audience was oohing and awing at that drill. His opponent wasn't full resisting him!!! I'm pretty sure some of those moves would be harder for Sensei Mirko to pull off if he had a student who was fully resisting him. Plus, his student just put his arm out when mounted. So, he got armbared. In BJJ, that's one of the first things we were taught not to do!!
Hey, I am sorry about giving my perspective at that time. I just watched the video again. I really liked that takedowns. The whole purpose of the demo was to impress the audience with flashy moves. I am happy that they attempted leg and ankle locks. I fully approve of that. The locks reminded me more of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. There are different ways of training and fighting. I know that most don't get the turtle position in BJJ. Probably, no Karateka would get caught doing that. :)
If you do the turtle position, maybe you can recive a hit on your ribs. Many positions guards you can let your body indefenso for a hit. I práctice karate and judo and I know how is.
Sorry, I didn't know that was a demo for the general public. That really makes sense now. I thought that it was a demonstration for the people who participated in the Festival. I know that we all love to show our flashy moves to the general public to impress them. BJJ does that too.
Well, I assumed that Goju-Ryu karateka would make beginner mistakes because they don't grapple. I don't remember Sensei Levi, who teaches the fighting class for Sensei Villa, teaching me to really defend my arms when mounted. I remember that being really hit home when I went to my first BJJ dojo. After training for a few months in BJJ, I grappled with the higher belts in the the fighting class. I remember that a young brown belt gave me his arms because he was trying to push me off.
@wifferjbiffer : this is posted as a demo, which means it was done in front of the general public, so it is normal they show some reaction, don´t you think? And of course, since it was a demo, the partner was not fully resisting and also gave an arm away!!!! I do not think that you really believe that only BJJ teaches not to give an arm away!!!!
I can comment and give my opinions about Goju-Ryu karate and BJJ because I have trained in both of them. For demo purposes, they did fine because the general public never gets to see that type of stuff except for UFC. However, from a technical stand point, I thought it was sloppy coming from Black Belts. It makes sense though because Goju-Ryu karateka don't practice with resisting opponents. Thus, creating a whole bunch of space and sloppy drills.
I was going through these comments and remembered how malicious WIFFERJBIFFER was being. this is getting personal and insulting. One thing that I learned in my years of training is to show respect to all martial artists, regardless of their style, skill level, and in your case, IQ. You obviously didn't others
Brilliant Demo

I like Sensei Buckwald's takedowns and throws though. That's something that I hardly work on. I just didn't like the standing ankle lock.

Learn any of that.
