Why The Culture War Matters | Matthew Goodwin

  • In this interview, John speaks with British political scientist ‪@drmatthewgoodwin‬.
Matthew recounts the emergence of a new class of elites and the ways in which they have diverged from the more traditional British ruling class, and more importantly, from the general public. They are distinguished by their elite education, lack of real-world experience, and a tendency to refuse engagement with the cultural issues that matter to the everyman. This phenomenon, Goodwin argues, is global and causing both sides of the political establishment to drift further from their constituents.
The framework Goodwin presents offers a compelling explanation for the recent rise in populism around the world, marked by the democratic success of leaders such as Donald Trump, Nigel Farage, Geert Wilders, and Javier Milei.
Matthew Goodwin is an academic, bestselling author, pollster, and speaker known for his research on: politics, populism, elections, voting, public opinion, Brexit, Europe, academic freedom and more. He is Professor of Politics at Rutherford College, University of Kent, recently served as Senior Visiting Fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, at Chatham House, Senior Fellow with the UK In a Changing Europe, Senior Fellow at the Legatum Institute, and Senior Advisor to the UK Education Committee. In 2022, Matt was appointed Social Mobility Commissioner.
The author of six books, he wrote the No.2 Sunday Times bestseller Values, Voice and Virtue: The New British Politics, and the Sunday Times bestseller, National Populism: The Revolt Against Liberal Democracy, which was translated into multiple languages and listed among the Financial Times and Times Literary Supplement as one of the books of the year. He is also co-author of the 2015 Political Book of the Year, Revolt on the Right, which was long-listed for the Orwell Prize and listed among the Financial Times and Guardian books of the year.

I think it's increasingly important that we keep our heads about us. While we should firmly stand up for the values that make both our countries great, I'd strongly, to the very end, urge people to resist acting out of anger and to become violent. I only say that, because, at least here in the United States, there's increasing buzz about potential for civil war. They have been instructed by the WEF and the UN to flood every western country with immigrants to crash the system and create a single government to oversee the US, Europe, UK, Australia, NZ and Canada as a single economic and cultural entity.
In order to achieve that, states must dissolve. It's a generational project that will likely be complete by the 2040s. I know that seems very soon but the immigrant situation is going to accelerate in the coming years because all liberal governments are onboard for this project and no powerful or meaningful opposition exists except for the voters but they don't get to vote on immigration issues, ever.
Global government had its seeds sown in the founding of the UN but will truly blossom once western states begin to collapse as they will with the debt growing every day.

Great interview with Matthew Godwin, who made so many excellent points.
British people shouldn’t think of the halcyon days of Conservative rule from 1979 to 1990 under Margaret Thatcher, and forget about the Major government that followed it from 1990 until 1997. In fact, the Major government marked, in monetary policy, a much more decisive break with the past than the Thatcher government. Chancellor of the Exchequer Norman Lamont made the Bank of England the first European bank with an inflation targeting regime. By making the target inflation indicator the Retail Prices Index excluding mortgage interest (RPIX), not the RPI, he also recognized that there should be a distinction between a consumer price series used for this purpose and one used for uprating pensions or incomes. And in 1995, with the incorporation of a housing depreciation component in the RPI, the RPIX series became a superior target inflation indicator as it now gave a substantial weight to current house price changes. The Conservative governments from David Cameron forward have largely destroyed this legacy. Gordon Brown made the UK HICP, misleadingly renamed the UK CPI, in December 2003, but the exclusion of housing prices from the new inflation measure was only supposed to be temporary, until Eurostat added an owner-occupied housing component based on the net acquisitions approach to the HICP. Unfortunately, waiting for this to happen has been like waiting for the second coming of Christ. The Cameron government, against all expectations, chose to create a CPIH series that supplemented the UK CPI, not with an OOH component including housing prices but with an imputed rent measure. Now the Conservatives plan to turn the RPI into a meaningless index with a movement that mirrors the RPI. In the long term, the CPIH will also almost certainly be the target inflation indicator of the Bank of England, since the Conservatives seem bent on a J.R.R. Tolkien approach to inflation measurement: one index to rule them all and in the darkness bind them. It is a betrayal of the legacy of the Major government and is bound to lead to more of the housing booms and busts that have plagued the British economy for so long. Shaun Richards, an English economist and blogger, has written extensively on this issue. It is a pity that he has not been more influential with the UK government.

By awful event, do you mean: When a violent criminal (who pointed a pistol at the belly of a pregnant woman) died while resisting arrest from a heart attack/drug overdose. Then there was a political show trial of the officers present and they were sent to jail, having done nothing wrong.

I was thinking about this yesterday. Workers are coming and going. Until a new worker is trained the quality goes down. Customer service is affected. Turnover is very high everywhere. When people were responsible you put up with the policies bc you had to pay your bills so you keep your job. Now adults living with their parents they quit their jobs and go elsewhere. The quality of employees is going down. Staff cut in front of customers almost run down the customer. They are rude discourteous. Apparently they are unaware of if you don't have customers you dont have a job. The company does not exist if you chase your customers away
