  • I got to drive the 2022 GR86 Premium with the automatic transmission and was surprised with how good it was. You surely lose some enjoyment on canyon roads but for the most part you don't miss the manual. It's great for everyday driving which makes this car well rounded. It's also slightly quicker.

    I prefer my manual in traffic. With electronic throttle, it'll creep for you while feet are resting. I find automatic version of GR86 works best if you have it in manual mode all the time. Torque converter and quick shifts (for a regular automatic transmission) makes it very rewarding and smooth, even in city traffic. Also, always being aware of what gear you're in (like in regular manual transmission) means you can blast out of a situation or go from 50% to 100% with absolute control.

    • @Toymonkeyjr
      @Toymonkeyjr Před 2 lety +2

      In the 86 auto I never liked manual mode, felt super unresponsive and not satisfying, if you leave it in drive it will downshift for you faster, and is a lot more smooth. I usually prefer manual mode but in cars like this they really need a transmission tune or a dct to make the paddles worth it. Same feeling with my 8speed lexus, super smooth but the paddles are just meh.
      Definitely feels decently aggressive since it's a 6speed but it still lacks in drama, and doesn't hold gears as long as I'd like it to. This is extremely noticable with an NA powerband you really need a manual to stay in the power and hold the gear while going through corners. Something like a 2.0l supra with the zf8 would be much more suitable with an auto, since the powerband is more user-friendly and you don't have to be at the top of the rpm band to get power.
      The gear ratios on the auto trans are also a bit of a letdown, especially for such a low power car. Definitely good for highway, but that's not really the premise of this car. I'd say get the manual or buy a car with a dct or zf8. If you don't care how a transmission changes how a car feels and just want something zippy, just get a miata. Still an enjoyable car, but if you're buying for performance not looks, the auto is a no go.

      @@Toymonkeyjr I had it set to track mode when I was using paddle shifter. The car sucks in any other mode...weather shifting yourself or letting the car do it. It puts down power extremely well, so I was totally not concerned about surprised traction issue. If I had this car, it'd be in track mode all the time (unless concern with snow or wet...but I'm not).

      In an auto, its called punching it or giving it enough throttle to force it to down shift. Most of us who own an auto know how much throttle we need to give for it to down shift. You dont always have to go wot to down shift unless your ecu or tranny is jacked.
