  • Johnny Cash and Johnny Rodriguez sing a Woody Guthrie classic, "Deportee." Today in the United States the song is still just as relevant as it was when this duet was performed in 1987 on Nashville Now.

I see three thumbs down. I guess there are a few folks upset to see Johnny Cash show compassion toward aliens. Nowadays, its hard to find someone on television show the courage of Johnnny Cash.

+CashPresley32 You do know the song is about migrant workers, don't you? Not immigration.
Also, "should" doesn't always factor into situations where people are trying to save the lives of their families. Even really, really white people don't watch their kids starve to death while they wait for the right paperwork.

Why do you think they were deported? They were temporary workers deported when their contracts ran out. Most of them probably would have preferred to stay in the U.S, but immigration law did not allow them to stay and look for other jobs. A number of proposals to "improve" current immigration laws involve bringing back a similar "bracero" law.

when I first heard this song it was done by the Highway Men. It caught my attention because I am Native Armericn and this place was stolen by people who came from other lands, but it is not mentioned in American history how the lands were shared with those new people. what conflicts broke out was because of the disrespect shown to the indigenous people and to the Creation that gave us life. Then this song is heard and it left me wondering why this country had to be so selfish. I think that is something that should be realized and understood by all of us. daneh ho neyo' de:ong neh sa'nigo:in

"Deportee" always hits me in the feels, but this version had me weeping. It is sung with such tenderness by these men, who took the trouble to honor its bilingual nature. Does anyone know what program this was presented on, who introduced the song, and when it was aired? My guess is the late 60s/early 70s. I'd never heard of Johnny Rodriguez before, but he did a damned fine job here.
I live in San Jose, and whenever I'm up on Hwy 17 pass to Santa Cruz, I always take a look back at Los Gatos, which we gringos tragically pronounce as "Las GAT-us." I don't know the exact location of the crash, but the telephone wires across the arroyo have those orange balloon-like plane warnings hanging from them. Where they installed as a precaution? I don't know, but I thought I'd share these details with my like-minded friends.
