Building HUGE LEGO CITY Tables!

- Today I start constructing the massive tables for the LEGO CITY! In order to start, I had to buy a TON of lumber and a new tool. All the 2x4s had to be ripped down, cut to the right size, screwed together, and then topped with melamine. Quite the project... HUGE TABLES... and we are not even halfway done yet!

This amount of space is great because rather than cramming everything into a busy city he could have large areas of space… a huge lake with sports, boat trips, surrounded by forest and hills. Lego sets/ buildings are nice but to put a unique stamp on a layout I think there should be vast open spaces and variations in terrain and elevation. Basically GTA map 🤣

Something that'll help if you have to cut indoors again is to put a tarp down underneath. You can then just dump the excess sawdust after. Love seeing this all come together!
Jordan, for the problem with the twist in the timber @ 6:56 - you can use a clamp on the side of the twisted piece and push down like a lever on the end of the clamp with your knee to take the twist out as you screw the end rail on.
For the legs, just flip the table frame over and do it upside down. Then flip it back up.
You can also cover the melamine edges with t molding. All you need to do is to run a router around the edges and hammer the t molding in. They are available in different colors.

Bricksie everything is coming along amazingly but as an owner of a construction company please do not walk ontop of these tables without interior cross branches with angle bracing. 2x4 isnt rated for those spans at that spacing. Your doing an amazing job with everything only a comment looking out for safety. Keep up the fantastic episodes.

A cool idea for the edging on the tables bricksie, you could use brackets or snot bricks on your mils plates around the perimeter so you could decorate the edge with bricks or tiles
I would say a bigger version of this is Brick World International. He is using pieces to cover up all the wood on the sides. It brings a lot of depth especially with water as it gives the illusion of depth.
Cracking job Jordan.... and agree you should start with the Capital I shape first off as you will have plenty room. You also have plenty lumber so yoj acn gradually fill it out as and when you need to in the areas you need to.
I was trying to visualize what I would do...if you had a separate modified section at the front you could put the mansion on it aa a separate island and then on the main section first table start the beach, boat yard, marina area and work back from there with the mountain range at the back and that way you could go high and disguise the bay door a bit more.......just my thoughts, I am sure whatever you decide will be awesome!
You can use t-molding for the edges. Just need to route a center channel. But I would add some sort of soft bumper to the corners.
I've used this Ryobi table saw on the construction site. Gets the job done. Very good 👍
My advice to smooth out the nooks and crannys you should get a grinder with a flapper disk attachment and sand down the uneven edges. Very quick.
If you're measuring for the curved edging remember to make allowances for the angled edges like a picture frame or cornice join so the corners are smooth too. You can just drill brackets in to table legs and put extra melamine on them for the train tracks etc. it's looking good 👍
It would be cool in the front section, where it would need to be modified because the wall separating the utility room from the rest would be cool for your medieval setup.
The new city is going to be giant! I think that you should add a lot of little stories and details at the edges of the city, so you can see them well.
The front of the city area could be for dioramas to start with!

You could use your track shelving for the subway, it clearly can hold the weight of the lego, plus you could put it to use. Just a thought.
I'd see how the track shelving would look for the subway. You have the stuff already. Might look ok.

Jordan, look into arcade t - molding, you can get large amounts cheap, and it only needs a special bit to cut the slots for it. you can also bend it around corners, giving you options as the tables change.

Cabinet shop that can pre mill and edge the sheets with half mill. Frame in a drop down area for a lower river and bridge like they do on train layouts. There's a youtuber with a nice subway system
Man love watching the city grow the way it has over the past few years keep going and with a city that size and space to expand the possibility are endless

Might be easier and maybe cheaper to use a trim router and 1/8” round over bit to take the sharp edges off the melamine.

Looking good! You could build little roller carts with all that extra lumber and melamine and a couple casters to help move buildings when you crawl under the tables.
I LOVE the idea of the subway! I may just try something like that on our single 8x4 sheet of melamine… show off… 😜 😂 Anywho, gotta do lights on the subway! Then I thought lights in the city like street lights and buildings would make it REALLY pop!

For the edges of the tables, there's plastic trim you might still be able to get that just clips on, which I used a long time ago... wow... yeah... twenty years ago... when I was rebuilding a set of wall-mounted bookshelves in my mom's basement... but it would result in the table surface being uneven at the edges by the thickness of the trim. The adhesive stuff sounds like it might be more of a pain to apply, but you'd get a smooth and level edge with it.
Hey Jordan! I "know" you since you moved to your house and renovated your basement... after time I lost you, but now randomly I saw that you moved your hole LEGO-stuff into here. Congrats, man! Absolutely right choice! And soooo much more space! And soooo much more possibilities! You could build a world in several levels, not only one - use the height! Do you plan to let visitors in? I'm curious where this will go...

idea here...could have a couple open sections in the table where its open and the city connects via bridge that you the person can open and close but have a cool feature where lights come on and one of those red and white poles that come down (to help from having to go on the ground, make some water scenes under that area as well

You may need to add additional legs in the center of the larger tables. While 2x4's are strong and can span a large distance, once you start adding all the Lego, you may see a little sagging in the middle of the big tables.
Very nice. Any excuse to buy a new powertool is a good one :) Those offcuts could be handy for shimming the display shelves on that uneven floor too.
Those leveling disks show work great. It will be interesting to see how long it *stays* level as the legs kind of settle into the carpet. It'll probably take a couple of months and you may need to revisit the leveling.

you my friend are a perfectionist. LOL love your city and family. Can't wait to see the city going up!!! think about having a pair of shoes left at the studio so you don't walk around in socks all the time. that concrete floor very bad for feet.
The modified section could be your airport
Bricksie, first of all your tables are looking fabulous and I'm enjoying watching the new studio space become a reality. Second of all, there's a Lego CZcamsr named Stein Auf Stein from Europe who has an awesome Lego City with a great Subway System and a few awesome underground areas as well. He shows in his videos how he made the Subway with tables similar to yours. Check him out he might be able to give you some ideas. He also builds mountains and waterfalls that use some interesting techniques. I hope you have a great weekend away and wish you and the family a safe trip and multiple Blessings.

Consider putting circular Teflon gliders under table legs so you can move them easily if needed. Love your blog!

Putting that trim around the table is the way to go, it will really improve the aesthetics and make it look expensive too

This project is really coming along great.
I did have a possible concern when it comes to the center connecting sections. Have you made sure with your measurements that they will line up with the baseplates on the main tables? You wouldnt want to have the center section be out of line with the larger sections.
If that all made sense. Either way, looking good.

Use ur cut off from lumber to make timber trim
For the subway you could attach large L-brackets like the ones IKEA sells for shelving onto the table legs and the use some of your melamine off cuts as shelves.
Add bridges on motors that you can raise so you can walk under
I’ve seen you use various Ryobi products. You probably know that the batteries of each of your cordless tools are compatible with each other even if your tools are 10 years old. You shouldn’t have to worry about dead batteries.

For the subway you could look how your German CZcams-colleague SteinaufStein setup his subway. He has several videos on how he attached the subway underneath his city.

For the sides, maybe a Lego waterfall effect. Like not an actual waterfall but like where Lego drips down to cover the sharp area
Don’t forget an airport, maybe that’s what the modified table near the stairs can be. A whole airfield
Those boards have the pith in them. You really want to avoid that. I hope they stay straight. What you really want to do is buy 2x12's because if they have the pith you can cut it out. Even better would be to buy LSL's or LVL's. They are engineered boards, sort of like plywood, but in 2x sizes.
if someone has a palm router you could do that for edging.
really starting to get a sense scale of the lego city now. were you not tempted to stick a couple of modulars on them? it's going to be amazing.

When you stand by the tables you look tiny! Really shows how big this city can become!
Where you have the sets on the floor, if you put a separate, unconnected table, you could have it set up as an island with pirates and explorers. Or make in a planet with space figs and aliens.
I would test the trim idea on some of your scrap first. Your studio is really coming together now.

Have you thought about building a small dolley to move new modules around under the table? Something on wheels that you can push around maybe? For when you eventually have to start crawling under the table
