  • Tired of those expensive and wasteful 1lb tanks? With some fittings and a little time, I converted my Road Trip grill for quick connects, allowing me to hook up to a 20lb tank for tailgating, as well as to bypass the regulator on my RV.
    Here's the grill on Amazon: studio.czcams.com/users/videoCMkI...
    Here's a great grill cover: amzn.to/3OMCOV6
    Here is the parts list from Amazon. You might not be able to source the exact items, but this should point you in the right direction:

    Thanks for the great video! Question for you on the grill itself; how have you been liking it? Does it do pretty well in high(ish) wind or does it struggle? Any other big pros / cons you've noticed?

    • @ThisDadGoesTo11
      @ThisDadGoesTo11  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for the kind words! I am loving this grill for camping and tailgating/picnics. I haven't wound up using it during crazy winds yet, but the power of this unit should be able to handle it. I used it last night in 0 degree Celsius weather with a light wind, and it had no issue holding 450 degree F, with each burner at around 2/3 power or so. It seems really efficient, even with the lid being a little raised up, as the design doesn't have it sitting flush with the bottom metal. I know I'll wind up using it in wind over the next few months, as I use it every Tuesday outside my daughters' dance studio, as a friend and I am waiting there for a few hours during dinner time, haha! I'll update if it does struggle anytime in the near future.
      If there is any possible con, it might just be the nature of cast iron grates. Mine are still in great condition, but I have taken good care to season it, to clean well after each use, and the re-season a couple of times in my oven. Also, if I'm going to cook something messy, I've actually put a layer of aluminum foil down on the grate, just to save me the hassle while out on the road! At the same time, the cast iron is great (pun?), as it holds the heat well, which I believe would help reduce temp fluctuations during higher blasts of wind. Pros? The inner track of it (below the grates) cleans up super easy, as long as you remember to add water to it prior to cooking. Just wipe it clean, and it's like new. Also, having the three burners is awesome. I have two friends with the two burner model, and they both agree the three burner is a way better design.
      I haven't been a fan of portable grills in the past, but this one is a gem. Converting to quick connects for 20lb tanks was more of a hassle with this model, as the regulator is built in, but I'm glad I did it. The expense of the fittings/hoses will be paid off soon, as I'm not using those overly expensive 1lb bottles.
      I'm not sure if you saw my unboxing/setup video for this, but I show it in more detail there. Let me know if you have any other questions! Thanks again.

    I thought running high pressure through a long hose causes oil to foul the hose and stove regulator, that’s why the regulator is at the tanks and not farther down the line.

    • @ThisDadGoesTo11
      @ThisDadGoesTo11  Před měsícem +1

      Hmm. It hasn't happened with this setup (so far, at least!). Either way, it's the only way to make this work without having to cut out the built in regulator and muck around with the innards, which I wouldn't be comfortable doing on my own. If I eventually wind up with some issue with this grill, I guess I'll have to do that. This has held for a couple years, so far, though. 🤞

    Excellent video, just got one last night and had that oh shart moment. I think i won't use the trailer propane tanks. I will pick up a 10lb tank and move the grill under a gazebo. However, seeing this video gives other options.

      Awesome! It's a great grill, but so much better when you're not having to pay for and carry around those 1lb tanks. While there is an up front cost of the fittings, it doesn't take too long to pay them off when paying way less to refill larger tanks. Thanks for the comment. 😁

    Great video. Exactly what I i was looking for. But, $150 for the parts? I might be able to do better with local building supply. I should have just bought the better model grill which doesn't have the built in regulator. It was $100 more.

      Yeah, it might very well be possible to get a better deal from other retailers. Where I live, I just couldn't source them elsewhere in a reasonable amount of time. They now have a three burner grill without the built-in regulator! Dang it! Oh, well, this works well, and I'm super happy I bought this when I did. Good luck getting the parts. Thanks for the kind words! 😁

    • @ThisDadGoesTo11
      @ThisDadGoesTo11  Před měsícem

      Thanks for the kind words! So, I only used the 1lb tanks a couple of times before converting this. The first time was for a kids park birthday party, so I probably ran it an hour, and the tank didn't run out...for what it's worth. I was in a hurry to get this converted, since the price of those tanks had skyrocketed shortly before I bought the unit. 🤣

    Finished modifying my trailer fittings today, worked well for the grill. Only question i have is when I dissconnect the quick connect grill line from the trailer high pressure side it releases the leftover gas in the line with a loud boom? Is that what you experienced as well? Any way to avoid that?

    • @ThisDadGoesTo11
      @ThisDadGoesTo11  Před rokem +1

      Awesome! Super cool that you did that. One thing you can try to avoid the near-heart attack gas expulsion is to turn off the propane tank temporarily while the line is still hooked up, and the unit is fired up. Remaining gas should continue to move through the line, until it's too weak to flow/burn, and it fizzles out. Then, turn off the grill and disconnect. I do that all the time with my short travel line for tailgating with this grill. Good luck! 👍

    Great job but what if the tank gets empty on the side you added the bypass ?

    • @ThisDadGoesTo11
      @ThisDadGoesTo11  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Yeah, that's a great question. I usually have the trailer bypass set up to haul off the other tank, so this one is largely for running my grill, oven, etc. If this one did run out, though, I have my propane hose that goes from the tank to a female quick connect. I could add that one on to my main grill line, disconnect the trailer from the propane, then connect my grill directly to the other tank. I wouldn't have to relocate closer or adjust much, that way. It's not super likely I'd have to do that, though, as I try to make sure my tanks are decently full for whatever trip I'm taking. Worst case scenario, I build a fire and cook on that. 😂 Thanks for the question!

  • @johnpeasley1673
    @johnpeasley1673 Před rokem

    I'm reading on various sites that high pressure quick connects are different from low pressure quick connects. Since you are connecting to high pressure, are you using high pressure quick connects or are you using standard low pressure quick connects? In looking at your links, they look like low pressure quick disconnects. Have you had any problems using low pressure quick connects on a high pressure lines? I'm just learning about this so please let me know if I'm missing something.

    • @ThisDadGoesTo11
      @ThisDadGoesTo11  Před rokem +1

      Hey, there! Yeah, these are low pressure connects. I haven't had any problem with them...the grill works just fine, both directly from the tank and when I hook up to the connection on the trailer. No issues with too-low flow, leaks, or anything else that would cause concern. Good question, though! Not sure if I'm just fluking out, or if it is fine because the grill winds up low flow anyway due to the regulator? Anyway, I'm just happy it works. So much better than blowing through those little tanks. Thanks for watching!

    • @MrJoelRobinson
      @MrJoelRobinson Před rokem

      I also have questions about the quick connects. I'm concerned about them being rated for low pressure (under 1psi to a few psi) versus the "high" pressure in the tubing between tank and the grill's built-in regulator. I want to convert my propane camping stove system in my van to use quick connects so I can swap stoves/grills easily but that would mean running 12-20psi post-regulator (my regulator is separate and will be adjustable) through the quick connect fittings which are rated for a fraction of this pressure.

    How do you use your camp stove with the low pressure hose from the trailer?

    • @ThisDadGoesTo11
      @ThisDadGoesTo11  Před rokem +1

      So, the grill, which has the silly built-in regulator, gets used with the bypass I installed in this video. For my stove (Camp Chef Denali Pro 3 Burner), I hook in near the back of my trailer via a quick connect I installed. The stove doesn't have a built-in reg; it came with a propane hose that had the regulator in line right before the connection to a 20lb propane tank. I just unthreaded the hose from the stove (leaving a male 3/8" fitting) and installed a quick connect fitting, just like I did on the Coleman grill. It was an easier job than the grill, since I didn't have to set up a bypass. This also makes it easy to use both units simultaneously, as they go through different connections on the trailer. I also bought a quick connect splitter that I could theoretically use on the back, so I can run my stove and, say, a propane fire bowl at the same time (for those sad trips when there is a fire ban).
      Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching!

  • @nicolaspage4885
    @nicolaspage4885 Před rokem

    Is there enough gaz flow in this? I have the x-cursion Coleman BBQ and I from what I see... People seems to say there will not be enough gas pressure to make it work correctly.

    • @ThisDadGoesTo11
      @ThisDadGoesTo11  Před rokem

      There totally is...but the trick is to install a bypass for the RV regulator, like I do in this video. If you don't, the gas flows through the RV regulator and then the one on the grill, and then the flow is too low. If you're just planning on using this with a portable 20lb (or whatever size) propane tank, then a pigtail hose (again, like the one I show in the video) that doesn't have a built-in regulator, works great. Thanks for the question! 👍

      Yes! Check the video description. I purchased almost everything through Amazon (Canadian site, so I didn't provide the exact links...plus, a lot of the times these things sell out, and you need to find a different providing company). I put in the descriptions for all the items I used. If you do a quick Amazon search (for whichever country you're in), you should be able to find the same item. Good luck! :)

      Would it also work using a splitter right off the tank - one line would go to the RV regulator and the other would go to my Coleman?

    • @ThisDadGoesTo11
      @ThisDadGoesTo11  Před rokem

      Yeah, that would work, as well. As long as you're tying in before the gas hits the trailer regulator, it's good. I couldn't really do it that way, as the plastic tank cover, combined with propane pigtail lines that barely reach to the tanks, makes for pretty tight space in there. Also, I wanted to have the quick connect for it, and it is nice and accessible where I put it. Go with whatever setup works best for you, though!

  • @stevenhaney575
    @stevenhaney575 Před 5 měsíci

    Maybe I'm wrong but it looks like you didn't bypass the regulator on the trailer looks like you just put a tee fitting on it and a quick disconnect on the trailer. And on the grill it looks like you just put a quick disconnect to connect to the trailer. And then a fitting(back up) to put on a 20 lb bottle with a quick disconnect also.

    • @ThisDadGoesTo11
      @ThisDadGoesTo11  Před 5 měsíci

      Hey, there! I put the T fitting before the regulator. When using the grill, I would run it off the left tank, so I'd get the gas before it hit the regulator. The system worked well until the last trip out in the Fall, when my regulator started to act up. Was choked about that, since they're not cheap. I'm actually going to remove the dual regulator in the spring, use a single regulator for the trailer (only goes to the back for my cooking stove, furnace that I rarely need to use, and fridge that normally runs off electricity) and then set up the left tank for just the bbq. It'll will be a simpler system...it also means that I won't need those other fittings I bought for this video. 😅 Life. Thanks for watching!
