- Bird painting (or any painting) can benefit from the soft blended foundation of wet in wet watercolor technique. Wet in wet does not need to be reserved for big washy skies, landscapes or fluid impressionistic treatments. Its a great underpainting technique too.

I am an art instructor. Often need to show some new ideas and alternative approaches in watercolor painting. Your tutorials are extremely valuable because of your step by step verbal explanation. Thank you!
You are costing me money😊😊👍👍. Thank you for showing your Techniques.
You are incredibly talented. Impressive and thank you for your instructions.
Unbelievably soft - really describes the feeling of feathers and down, yet crisp enough to know exactly what was painted. People that have owned and loved their chickens as pets can attest to the softness of feathers bellies and backsides captured perfectly with this wet on wet technique. Just beautiful.
Thanks so much!
I'm just starting to get serious about painting birds ... Very intimidating. THIS is how I want my birds to look. After my two Cardinal failures this morning, this demo gives me hope. Thank you so much!!!
I can't stop watching. I wish I could comment with photos because I attempted a bird from a reference photo and then watched this video and did it again. Wow! What a difference. I am learning so much. You are an amazing watercolor painter! Thank you!
I need a snake hat like that. That is an amazing, amazing hat. (I'm late to the party, but I'm studying underpainting. I'm amazed at the difference it has made so far for me.)
Gorgeous!!!!
That's beautiful. I love the yellow green vignette style background.
Beautiful!
LOVE your work !! Thanks for sharing it with us !!!
Love the softness, really nice.
Beautiful. I love painting a bird on a twig-started that at 4 years old, still love it. This is a gorgeous color combination
Fascinating to watch you paint! Thanks for the video!
Stunning.
Your drawings of birds are my favorite.
Continuing to learn and get much needed grasp on what can be created. Thanking you from Kentucky!
Thanks! I never thought about using wet on wet like this but of course it makes perfect sense !
I appreciate you letting us see the reference picture while you work...it helps me see why you do what you do... As always, I love your work and thanks for sharing your information.
Steve, you are nothing short of a genius. Thank you again for tackling one of my favorite subjects, you've inspired me to do some more birding!
+WCPFISH Very kind! Thanks.
I started watercolor painting exactly a year ago today taking a birding field drawing class. Your break down on the various ways to do the wet on wet techniques is very helpful for my favorite drawing and painting subject of birds. Also you have shown me another great pen to add to my supplies.
so helpful. just what I needed! thanks. I never knew watercolor pencil could be used this way.
Very nice to see the bird come to life as you add more colour, detail and the background. I find your tutorials very inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing Steve!
+roden70 You're welcome, thanks for watching!

I've just picked up the brush again and I love birds, have so many reference photos. I love the wet in wet base to the piece, absolutely wonderful and inspiring.
Really beautiful!
Thankyou very much, always worthwhile to listen to, and a good look forward into spring possibilities.
Thank you. Love your videos.

Turned out so beautifully. Thank you very much for teaching us!
+Beth Arcuri 👍
Thank you for sharing your techniques. I've never really tried painting in watercolour with a large brush, it's always a size 00! So learning from you I may pop out and purchase one somewhat bigger. Thank you :-)
You're awesome! Love your videos!
I love it, and as usual I learned a few things. Thanks Steve.
+Denise Brooks Quite welcome!
Simplesmente fantástico,parabéns,Deus abençõe o sr.

+Hazy A. 👍
Great vid. Really learned a lot from you
absolutely beautiful work...love your videos !! :)
Always love your birds, Steve.
The technique you show here is just awesome.
I have always tended to think along the lines of wet-wet painting as being the start-up for something bigger, a sort of pre painting stage where you decide where you put stuff. This will definately add new dimensions to your works.
Thanks so much.
+Wayne L Cool, thanks Wayne!
This is a great video! I've watched it several time (along with your others....watching them several times, too) and them so helpful in learning to paint loosely. I have such a habit of over-working and not leaving (or destroying) my whites! Please make more bird tutorials. I'm still learning and, after 1.5 years of painting still need all the help I can get. Your videos can't be beat by anyone!
+Kyt Yes, I have a feeling more birds are coming. Thanks for watching!
i love that half way thru the vid i was like ummmmm whats happening but after you started adding details half way it really pulled it together beautifully. sometimes my paintings hit the ugly stage a d i give up but u pushed thru and it looked stunning. thanks for sharing this
+Melissa Vella Yes, there is often an ugly stage with wet in wet. As long as you preserve your highlights and values, you can usually bring it around in the end
Most the time, the ugly stage is my final stage. :D Anyway, my lack of talent is so cute and fun that I can not stop loving it and cultivating it.
Love it!!!!
+muralistl 👍
I Love the way you did this, very soft, but at the same time very crisp. Truly lovely. Alice
+Alice Clark Thanks!
Looks good and very well explained. Let's see more!
👍
Once again a terrific video! I am inspired every time I watch. Thanks!
+Vivian Dibrell 👍
Thank you so much for sharing that, it was very useful! I usually overwork my birds when I'm painting in watercolour, so I need to try this technique!
👍
Yay Steve's back! Missed you buddy.
+Bartholo Clumpdink 👍

A good bird is a wet bird. Ha ha love it. Very helpful , beautiful bird. Your videos always cheer me up. I've always been an oil painter but you have really opened my eyes to how really beautiful watercolour can be. Great job.

so inspiring, and a lovely finished work of art ♥
+Tindaloo76 👍
Wonderful job. I learned a lot. Thanks!
+walktheparth Glad to hear it!
That looks like so much fun!! I understand there's phases to creating a piece... the sketch, the underpainting, then detail... I have trouble recognizing the detail I'm seeing and unable to break down that detail. So essentially I end up with an incomplete picture. Ah, the never-ending process of learning.
Thanks so much for the lesson. I'm going to have to try it soon.
Lauri
+Windkisssed Yes, it can be daunting. Observation is the best skill you can develop. Value is particularly important to observe and record (how light or dark something is).
Constantly working on value!!! practicing shading right now. whew!!
Hi Steve and welcome to 2017, hope that you had a very pleasant and relaxed Festive season. I have watched this before and I will do doubt watch it again for skill acquisition.... hopefully. I am into attempting to paint birds at the moment and require all the technical input that I can muster, so this video was excellent for me. I shall endeavour to employ some of your tips and techniques in my next bird attempt...many thanks as usual.
Wonderful lesson, as usual! I have a hard time keeping my paper wet long enough to finish each section of a painting. I am using that same Fabriano paper.
wow it´s sooo beautiful
+Happy Kappa Thanks!
Well, I did it! Thanks to being sick I've watched all of your videos--which has been a very pleasant way to pass the time. :) I love your work and instructional style, it's been very helpful. I'm excited to get back into my studio once things get back to normal around here. Thanks for the great content!
Cool! Thanks for all the watch time. Hope you're feeling better soon.
I need more of this.! Im a bird watcher and want to do a collection for my grandaughter.
So talented!
Thank you!
Very pretty. I'll give this a try.

I am a new subscriber and really appreciate your inspiring, educational and uplifting videos. I am teaching myself this new and exciting medium, having worked in pastels and mixed media. I am so glad you show your references, as most u tube demos neglect to show them. I appreciate suggestions for excellent supplies, brushes and substrates. I am falling in love with watercolour, and want to carefully build up quality supplies to carry me through on this amazing journey. Thank you so much for sharing your insight and experience, your humour and beautiful verses at the end. Your work is amazing!
Thanks! Welcome to the medium.
I've been subscribed to your channel from the beginning. I cannot convey how much I appreciate them and how they have helped me in my own paintings. They are instructional, clear and extremely helpful. Thank you!
+Ginette Ritchie Thanks for sticking with me. Glad they've been help.
Enjoyed. Sometimes, it's like you read my mind...just as I wondered about what colors you were using, you say..then when I was wishing I could see the photo reference, you showed it!
Very helpful! Thanks!
