I know it is only one song... but why does it feel like another version of Blackpink's "how you like that"??? I know it's YG's formula, and it is commercially successful, but this group is so much more talented than that!!!

This is YG signature debut sound and concept. 2NE1, Blackpink, Ikon,treasure, etc. That debut song will always represent the company primary concept and sound. This should come as no surprise. I’m sure the next song will show something different and we won’t have to wait long.

I will give them another shot, but this undoubtedly sounds like a retread. YG could have given this debut familiar structure and elements while still creating a more unique identity. The most conspicuous past examples were "Boombayah" and "Whistle" which, while sharing some common characteristics with YG's 2nd gen songs, still sounded fresh and distinct enough to make BP stand out from their predecessors. This therefore is NOT how one would imagine YG would have introduced their first gg in 7 years. My guess is that they had something completely different in mind for this debut but chose to go conservative. Several idols had left the company and their future with BP was uncertain. So they apparently decided to do Blackpink 2.0.
RORA, RAMI and AHYEON are my favorite vocalists in BABYMONSTER...
Dunno about other things but i just noticed that the instrumental sound after the line "batter batter batter up" sounded like money tune like money's chorus tune yk 😭
I still loved the dance break and spcially rap bruhh🔥
YG has the signature sound and formula same thing happened to blackpink and was compared with with 2NE1. I don't see them changing it anytime soon. I didn't expect anything more or less. It's their debut but most groups find their sound and style later on in their careers also could be intentional with Blackpink contracts up in the air.

I mean YG has done this sorta stuff for almost two decades now so i wasn't expecting anything different. I still love the girls and enjoy the song regardless
Also we have to remember that this song, choreography, mv, was all made in about 2 months coz of the situation with Ahyeon, so they do have an actual debut album ready for their next comeback when she recovers.
I really appreciate your honest viewpoint on this because I've really been seeing these reactions and they all think it slaps but all i was thinking about was how this is so blackpink-coded, or like YG to a tee, which is not what a new group really needs. I felt really bad for thinking so since everyone is treating this not like a revolution but like a new idea that's never been done, but i just really think this is one of those few songs i just can't see the point of relistening to. Maybe that's not what you were trying to convey but i just really thank you for speaking your truth, it made me feel a lot better about my own opinion. (maybe you said this, i'm typing this up while watching lol)
I get it and your opinion is ok and doesn't need validation from anyone. Music is subjective. That's what makes it so great! I was also hoping for a new sound of some sort, but YG has that sound coded and god forbid they stray from that, because it sells so we will continue to get rehashed formulas. Its been like that since 2ne1 or maybe even sooner...

YG really has a sound, I think it’s the trumpets that made it very YG, and I doubt they’ll leave it for a long while so I’ve accepted that we ain’t gonna get anything more than that from them

They were already compared before their debut with Chiquita and Lisa, Rami with Rosé, Ahyeon with Jennie ect. All their sets are made so they may appear to look similar. The girls are also young so I feel like the concepts and content of songs are limited. I am still going to give them a chance and see how they grow in the coming years.

in my opinion this "YG sound thing" is the reason i couldn't follow their groups (except for BP). I would love to see some unique concepts in every group but that is just me, let's wait for their comeback and see what direction they take. Thank you for your honest reaction!
it sounds like "How you like that", but all the Blackpink songs have a lot in common. I think it is a problem of their company which makes the same attitude to all groups...

Since the renewal of blackpink's contracts have been in discussion for so long, my theory is maybe the blackpink members won't continue with YG so YG is trying to replace them !

Asa is one of the lyricist and composer in the song she probably write/composed her part(maybe the whole rap) thats propably why i liked it the most. hope yg let her do her own stuff more often that could maybe make something new in yg.

You're not alone to think that. YG is despered. YGE have been a bad sitiuation right now. They played sefety first. Reproduction by combine 2NE1, Bigbang Treassure and ofc Blackpink is the assumed success way. But it's worked commercially and financially for decade. Tbh it's too risk to change now. I thingk they try to capture new fan rather than old kpop fan, just like Blackpink transitted from 2NE1, unavoidably. And 3mins the debut MV isn't enough time to show their talents.

Blackpink, Treasure, 2en1, bigbang, now this, they all sound exactly the same. I wanted babymonster to have a different sound and concept. The MV is cheap, the song and mv is a copy of every other YG group and the song is just recycled. Is just lazy production. The korean citizens are not liking this debut, they even call them "blackpink with no money" lol
I wish all the best for BM because they are talent held back by YG's agenda
