I’m 63 yrs.old, finally made my first granny square...Thank you so much...Keep safe and stay healthy...
Melanie passed away from cancer at the beginning of last year. She’s so sadly missed by all her followers. She was an amazing woman and I still come to her videos she taught me so much.
I just read this. My condolences to her family.😢
Nobody cares
Sad to hear. She had me wanting to make granny squares. Just spent $50.00 on Amazon!

Missing Melanie and her wonderful personality. Heart and hugs to her family during this holiday season. I know she's greatly missed. ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Used this tutorial to make my first ever granny square! Idk if those in heaven can look down on us or not but it would be cool if Melanie could see how blessed I am and how happy to have accomplished my first one thanks to her help and putting herself out there on CZcams! ❤
This is by far the best tutorial I have seen on a solid granny square. You really take your time and explain everything as you go. Additionally, you kept it simple and didn't make any harder than it had to be. Much appreciated.
Hello Angela
How are you doing
I have gotten a lot of requests lately for a 1 color granny square tutorial! Thanks for watching and don't forget to give this video a thumbs up! Also, I will link the video that shows 1 way to join them together if that's helpful! czcams.com/video/9BdgvlW-6hs/video.html
Melanie Ham you are amazibg!! Thank you so much for all the tutorial !! I have started crocheting because of you!! If you could please do a tutorial on a poncho, that would be wonderful!!! 🙄
Hello Melanie, I have been crocheting for over 50 years and the design you use of working backward for the first part of the first corner is genius. It truly does make the work look good. Can't tell where the work begins. Thanks so much for sharing your designs and especially for your hard work.
Thank you! This is exactly what I needed. My favorite sister-in-law's mother, Granny, died a couple of years ago, leaving at least two unfinished granny square afghans. She didn't like to join small squares together so made her afghans as one huge square. My SIL asked if I'd be willing to finish them. One was almost finished and I was able to finish up the row she'd started and tie it off. The last one is about two feet square currently. I've waited until cooler weather (we live in The South™) to work on it and now this evening I find myself having to start a new row. I'm better at knitting than crochet, and if I ever knew, I've forgotten how to do that. Thank goodness for the Internet. This tutorial is exactly what I need to help out my beloved SIL and finish this afghan. Granny left nine skeins of yarn with which to finish the piece. I'll be working for a long time on this one!
Melanie can't thank you enough for such a clear, uncomplicated, concise, and free from distracting music tutorial. I watched 3 and found your's to be perfect for my easily confused brain. Subscribed and liked! Thanks again and forever grateful🤗
Just graduated high school so I have time to come back to crocheting after a long hiatus. Thank you for always being here Mel, we all miss you 🤍
You are a great teacher. Love how you did slow at first abd then sped up video. Also, liked how you recapped at the end.
Revisiting this video again many years after first making a blanket using Mel's technique! I'm proud to have her help re-teach me this lesson. Xoxo ❤❤❤❤
This video was so good! I've been crocheting for around 5-6 years now and have never made a granny square till just now. Thank you 🌹💜
I have started so many times on granny squares from different videos, and I have found yours to be the best and easiest. Totally awesome, Thank you so much
I am a beginner, from Italy. You are so clear! Thank you very much for your beautiful tutorial 👌
Thank you for making this video! I love how you go slow and go over everything. Great quality as well. Off to crochet some granny squares! 😁
Thank you for these videos I’ve mastered stuff right away after watching your videos! Please post more and keep up the awesome work! 💜
Hi, Melanie. Your granny squares look simply adorable. You and your videos are truly an inspiration to us all. 💖💖💖🌹
This is one of my go to channels on how to crochet. Your so easy to follow. Thank you for another wonderful tutorial.
Best video on a granny square I could find. The 1st one I watched she was slip stitching 3 times and it was driving me insane having to do that and you're definitely right about it making 1 side look larger than the other because I've tried that way and your way and your way looks so much better. I thank you so much for this tutorial! 💓
A fantastic demonstration. I actually managed to do it! And it looked so professional. Thank you x❤
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I've been crocheting for a year now and have never been able to do a granny square. I told myself that it was going to be one of my New Years tasks to learn and your video did it for me. I've been making them for two days now thanks to this video. I've even done color changing. I love your videos please keep them coming.
Hello 👋 There

I miss you sweet lady! You taught me so much over the years! I hope you’re dancing 💃 with the angels and crocheting. 🧶 ❣️
First time making a granny square! Thanks for being so thorough ❤
I spent half an hour tryna find a granny square tutorial that didn't go above my head
Thank you for the tutorial, I just finished making a bag for my yarn project using two very large squares and the same stitch for a strap 🙏 its soaking in conditioner water right now and its turned out fantastic
Lovely!! I attempted to follow along and did not do so well. But I’ll keep practicing. That you for the video.
Great quality video--will use this to start a granny square blanket.
This is a great technique. Thanks , you are awesome !
I have only just found this channel and thanks to this brilliant video I managed to make my first granny square. I had been struggling to get them just right and was losing heart, but thanks to this tutorial I have succeeded. I lost my older sister to cancer two years ago. She was estranged for many years and although we connected briefly before her death I regretted things like not being able to learn crochet from her - she was really good at it. I have taught myself crochet via CZcams and have made some scarves. It has helped me feel my sister is still with me and has made me hope that in some way she will know about how I have progressed. Now here is the strange thing…yesterday I was losing heart, berating myself that I kept getting stray hairs in my yarn and thinking my technique was useless. Today I found this video and not only did I see the stray hair caught up in Mel’s yarn but also that I crochet in exactly the same way she does. I am saddened that this lovely lady is no longer with us, but her legacy is very great indeed. Thank you, love & light Mel x
New subscriber here -- I made 2 of these Granny Squares!! Your instructions is so clear and so easy to follow. I am a newbie (beginner) and happy that I gained more confidence in crochet! ❤🧶
Thank you! I've been having trouble connecting my corners to the initial chain 3. It always looked weird. I was only going through one loop, that was the problem. Thanks for showing it so clearly a lot of other videos don't show both strands.
Thank you for this tutorial. I made my first granny square. It was beginner friendly and easy to follow for a basic square. 😊
I'm not a real beginner but, have so many questions. I often don't know where to go or how to finish a stitch, or a row, or how to turn and start again. It's helping to watch your videos. You speak to these very issues. Thank you. Lynn
Hi Melanie, how would you join the squares together to make a blanket?
Thank you! This video is what finally made it click for me, and I managed to make my first granny square.
Thank you! Love the corner better then slip stitch
I have been crocheting for a while and had made granny squares before, but I was in the middle of doing one and totally forgot how to do a solid color one.
Thank you so much!
Hello Lora
How are you doing
Melanie, this is such a great tutorial! Could you do a video showing how to join the squares into a blanket or other fun projects using the squares? Also, I would love to see some holiday-makers tutorials for projects for Fall and Winter holidays. Thanks again for your wonderful videos!!!
Finally. A clear tutorial. Thanks!
I found this really helpful - thank you 😊
That your for this TUTORIAL greatly appreciated ..easy and fun!
I really like that way of doing it!!! Thanks!!! :)
Your tutorials are so easy to follow and everything I make turns out perfect.

Thank you for this video. I'd be lost without it. ❤❤
Thanks for the help! Getting the hang of it!
This is the best granny square tutorial! I replay it all the time. I don't like the term "granny square" so I call it a "Ham square"! lol
haha you are sweet!
This was very helpful thank you so much
Great thorough tutorial. Do you have another video of changing yarns granny square crochet?
Could you PLEASE do another sewing video? I miss them so much!!
Very pretty!!
AHHH THIS IS THE ONLY TUTORIAL THATS WORKED FOR MEEE
I think I finally understand! Thank you!
Thanks! I know understand one color Granny Squares...great tutorial! A tad off camera at times and a tad to fast at times...but I got it! Thanks again!
Love this method as I’ve also not been able to crochet a granny square before. Very new to crocheting. Can you change colour using this same method? And still have it look as neat.
Thank you, great video.
Thankyou for your ever so easy and excellent tutorial..
I have bought yarn and would like to make a large throw using your granny square method, I will be using 3 colours so I will have to join each time I start the new colour ..
I wanted to know if you think it’s best to turn the granny square around for each row ..
Thankyou so much again & God Bless ❤
I have literally been trying to find a good granny square tutorial for ages and it has been impossible. Everything was too hard and I gave up. But this tutorial was amazing and so helpful. Thanks Melanie!
Hey your the earliest comment I could find on here do you mind helping me with one thing? So 6:57 which stitch am I putting my hook in I couldn’t really see it clearly. Please help
Nm lol i thought she was starting a new round
Do you have a granny square with changing colours to show us how to change the colours please. Love your videos. Excellent teacher.
Nice. Love it. I've been staying away from making granny squares because of the magic circle thingy. Good to know I can make one this way :)
Best instructions ever..
That is great Thank You.
Great video.
I've been crocheting for 4 weeks and I made tons of things but this help
Great video! Do you happen to know what nail polish color you are wearing?
Do you have these instructions in a printable version?
Love it
Thank you!
I have watched over 15 tutorials that say “beginner”, “absolute beginner” and they go way too fast.. this tutorial is the only one I have been able to follow and because of that I just made my first granny square. Thank you for actually taking your time to explain both verbally and visually what you meant when you used a technical term.
Honestly this is a better granny square than the other granny square video she did where she changed colors. This one is more defined and so much easier to get the hang of. I would prefer this granny square over your color changing one.
A bit fast at first but this was my 1st project w/ some help from my grandma…I learned in one day and I definitely recommend (btw I’m only 12 so..)
Me too!!
Thank you✨
Great job beautiful 😍
Thank you!! I’ve been watching other videos and some are very confusing. I have one question, when starting a new round you don’t have to turn your work?
I would live to see some different styles of squares to possibly join to make a blanket
Hi Melanie I love your tutorials. Although I have been crocheting for a long time, you have new and simple ways to make it easier. I was wondering if you have a video tutorial on crocheting a Long Vest? I saw a video in Spanish by Crochet MC, however she is unable to do it in English. Thanks
Hello Patricia
How are you doing?
What’s the color changing yarn called? It’s beautiful!
Thank you!
Your instructions are very clear abd easy to follow however my work is curling at the corners. Can you please help?
What is the name of the color changing yarn..can you use sz 5hook..what sz yarn and type? Thanks..blessings
Girl mine was a triangle 😂😂😂
Are these instructions written out somewhere, I can copy them.I love your video's..Thank you for your tutorials..
I've been trying to learn how to crochet. I got bought me a book from Walmart but it's not really helping. I'm having a super hard time learning. I haven't got the chain down pat yet I feel like I'm doing it to tight cause my stitches don't look like the videos I watch I can see the holes in the videos but I can't really see them in mine an I can't get the hang of starting the single crochet. Please help!!!
Hi Melanie. I recently had to have a Total Knee Replacement, 2 weeks ago, and am feeling kind of stir-crazy and wanting to do something. I'm not able to get back to sewing or quilting yet, so I have been watching your crocheting CZcams videos. You are such a great teacher, and I think I could learn how to crochet by watching your CZcams videos! Anyway, I was wondering what would be the best beginner friendly project of yours for me to start with. I would have to get everything, from the hook, yarn, needle to weave the tails, etc. So, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance. Teri
Hello Teri
How are you doing?
I have a quick question have you ever used super chunky yarn
Thanks so much l love it
The best part was it was on my level lnclued speed
Thank you, great tip, I have always slip stitched across to start the next corner, but love this method and the finish is much neater. Can I ask what self striping yarn you used for the granny square? It's lovely.
Mary Alison it's a Caron cakes, I'm not sure of the color :)
Mary Alison I'm sorry I think this is actually a sweet roll :) the pink, orange and cream one
Mary Alison I got so confused before I clicked the video. lol Im like, that peach/pink one is not 1 color!
I miss her so much ❤❤❤❤
Hi, i just got yarn today and ive never crocheted,i made the magic circle but i cant chain like ill wrap the yarn around my hook and when i go to pull through the slipknoght the yarn will just unwrap itself if that makes sense and ive tried a million tutorials and times but i cant figure it out, could u maybe make a video on it so i czn learn how to chain or explain it to me?
Thank u
Edit- im using loops and threads acrylic yarn and the recommended loops and threans 5.5 hook
What is the name of the self striping yarn?
Love all your tutorials. Could you give the size of hooks in mm also please. I have to keep looking up your American size you give. Would really appreciate if you could. I make a lot of your videos.

💚💛💙Brasil....parabéns. Y love you Melanie
Hi, Melanie. I was wondering; can you continue that pattern to make a blanket?
Yes
@ 5:21 minutes, you kind of went off topic. Did you do THREE or 2 Dcs there? Was it chain 3 then DC 2? The "chain 3" is the corner?
