  • This little video vignette is a very small glimpse into life while boat camping in the canyon.
In the morning when we got up, a team made coffee and tea and then breakfast and lunch. Everyone else had to pack up their belongings and re-rig the rafts. Then a team had to clean up the kitchen and pack it onto the boats. Finally a team would close up the groover - a fancy word for the box you shit in - and pack that onto the groover boat. This set of tasks typically took our crew at least 2 hours.
We would generally depart our camp around 10 AM and row anywhere from a few miles to 20 miles during daylight. Sometimes we would stop along the way to take a short hike to see nature or artifacts from the native people or souls who didn’t live to tell their own tales of their adventures down the canyon.
When we’d arrive at camp in the evening, after a short “union break”, we’d need to set up the groover and the kitchen. Those who slept on land would set up their cots or tents, while the boatmen mostly slept on our boats.
A team would cook dinner each night, and another team would clean up. During dinner our Trip Leader would tell us the plan for the next day. By then it was after dark, my energy level tended to fade. Unlike home, I’d be asleep by 10 PM or so, and up with the first light in the 6:00 hour.
