  • We decided to have lunch with the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Elders. This is a weekly event on Tuesdays. Our friend, Emily, is visiting from Scotland, she has been here all summer working at a summer camp in Medford. Emily chose our tribe for her school dissertation; her major is Social Anthropology.
Emily was introduced to many of the youth and we wanted her to get an idea of where we really come from and why we do the things that we do. We only came to participate and admire some of the elders and as things were wrapping up, Ms. Elizabeth McGuire began to talk to Chief Mark Gould, who was seated with us. We were so amazed with her stories and it did not dawn on me until the end to start recording. This is the result. Truly amazing!

We are allowing you into our secrete hidden world. Each video gives you little hints of how we live. We are members of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape. Customs and celebrations have been passed down through many generations. We will remember, each generation that passes leaves markers and teachings through the birth of the new generations.
We have remained in our homeland and have been here for over 10,000 years, right here in New Jersey.
We have discovered how to survive, to be "our people" and/or authorities on South Jersey Indigenous. The promises we made to our elders many years ago are being honored with each generation.
Please Subscribe for more about our hidden in plain sight culture. We truly hope that you enjoy all the posts. Vic and Ty

I love this video. I grew up in southern Delaware, the area I believe Ms. McGuire was speaking of with the story of stealing the bike, going to Millsboro and seeing the man in the stockade. I'm 52 now and my parents still live in the same house since I was a kid. Their place is between Unity Branch and Phillip's Branch, near Hollyville, Harmon's Hill and Angola. I feel fortunate that I grew up with a diverse group of friends of many descents, including Nanticoke. Just a few miles away in Georgetown or Millsboro, folks of different backgrounds didn't seem to mix much. I believe experiencing those different cultures (and never really seeing much of a difference from myself in any) has been a blessing.
