  • Hi All!
    I'm so excited to share with you my latest and most prized addition, a Vanilla bean plant. In this video, you'll learn why it took nearly 100 years for vanilla to be produced in Europe, how many types of vanilla bean and if you can grow your own vanilla. It may be a few years before I have my own pod, but I'll be sure to stick around and show you when (or if) it does flower.
    Till next time.

    I’m growing vanilla bean orchids inside under LED lights and they are doing great. I figured it out. I keep them in pots inside giant ziplock bags which keeps the humidity high. I’m growing them in Yacolt Washington near the volcano Mt. St. Helens.

      @Ernie H I was backpacking near the mountain and Spirit Lake in August before the mountain blew. It was beautiful, hot and we would have been killed if the mountain had erupted while we were there. I’m glad I got to experience it before it erupted because it will never be like that again in my lifetime.

He told me I would need to, have to get a greenhouse, which am going to get before purchasing. Saffron is really hard to grow in Australia as we dont have cold winters, so they generally turn are annuals instead of perennial. I hope you get a vanilla plant soon!

      I wonder if you could grow it in pots and stick it in the fridge or freezer. Better yet if you can just dig it up like potatoes or onions to chill for the winter -- if that works you could store a lot of bulbs in a pretty small space.

    I wondered why vanilla extract seemed expensive, then I saw a video of how it is grown in Madagascar, and the fact that it takes over a year, needs expert care, is only hand pollinated, is risky with some crops lost….wondered why it was so cheap.

    What do you do when the black dot mildew starts to appear

    • @TheGardenersLife
      @TheGardenersLife  Před 2 lety +1

      I havent experienced this before. Are you sure it is mildew? First step is to properly identify what disease it is. It sounds like it could be either fungal or black rot. If from overwatering, then would suggest drying out soil or repotting, removing infected sections and applying fungicide. Wishing you the best of luck. Hoping to do an update video soon on my plant growth.

    • @walterbobrowski4761
      @walterbobrowski4761 Před 2 měsíci

      I stopped black fungal spots from appearing by doing two things: 1) first cleaning with peroxide then using a spray fungicide (I happen to have Garden Safe brand "Fungicide 3" with fungicide, miticide and insecticide for my fruit trees which are prone to black mold as well), then 2) increasing air circulation using USB-powered fans (small 2-3" PC cooling fans).
