- Hello guys!
#AlexTheGrumpyOne here with another video for you :)
This is a video on VW Tiguan mk1 and mk2 rear brakes replacement with electronic handbrake. This is also the same on the rest of the VAG group cars with electronic handbrake.
Please make sure you do everything safe and that the vehicle is supported correctly.
Torque settings:
13mm brake caliper bolts to the carrier 35NM;
M14 bolts from carrier to hub 90NM + 90º turn;
T30 torx bolts discs to the hub 12NM;
Wheel nuts/bolts 120NM;
Diagnostic tool used is a G-scan2, which is an amazing professional level tool that I would highly recommend. I got my one from #Hickleys and here is the link for it:

This is a very well thought out video! It will be extremely helpful as I attack my Tiguan in the upcoming weeks!!
Thank you! I'm glad that you like it!
Let me know if you need any more help or info and share your experience with us :)
Well presented and very easy to follow. Thank you
Thank you. I appreciate it 😀
Thanks for the video. very helpful. One big tip though and something I always do when working inside wheel arches for suspension and brakes is to thoroughly jet-wash the area and parts. This means you will be able to get the spanners to fit easily and most importantly...not have mud dust drop all over the new parts when re-fitting them. Working in filth is really stupid bad practice and amateurish and the finished job will be compromised. Jet washing will take no longer than a few minutes but the job will be far more easier and pleasant. Obviously done outside the garage before raising the car.
Thank you. I'm glad you like the video.
Yep you are right! At work I get them jet washed first specially on the 4x4s!
In my barn I havent got jet washer or mains outlet unfortunately 😔
I like to fart in the passengers seat before operating on the rear Volkswagen Tiguan brake pads.
I would recommend using Silicone grease for the slide pins as it won’t degrade the rubber over time. I might be wrong but whenever I get the Brembo pads it usually comes with silicone grease, plus copper grease dries over time, silicone grease won’t. Like I say I might be wrong but that is what I usually use as a better alternative. 😊 great video btw, I like the camera angles you use and good lighting on the job.
Cheers buddy! I appreciate that!
You are right some do come with silicone bags. They are a slightly better choice for the sliders. But copper grease does the job well :)
Yeah I bought new wireless microphone and trying to improve lighting and etc ;) cheers
Thanks for the vid and especially for the torque specs.
Would you know whether specs are the same on VW Touran 5T1 with EPB? The rear brake disc shall be 300mm size, I’m planning to get rear brakes done in spring.
Btw the need for scan tool can be bypassed with 9V battery with simple two wires clip - this is how I’ll rewind EPB before the mechanical part of the job.
You can remove the electronic motor from the back. 2 screws/bolts holding ir on. Turn handbrake off and then wind the motor back in. Change pads as normal. Replace motor and pads then when completed hold handbrake switch up for about 10 seconds. Should get a bleep from dash
What a great guy
Meticulous video !!!
Can you do a video on VW door locks inc. tailgate switch and lock ? ❤️❤️
Thank you very much. I appreciate it!
Would that be on how to remove door cards and remove the lock?
@@AlexTheGrumpyOne Yeah ... removing trim and getting to the tailgate locks that go wrong all the time on VW’s
That sounds like a plan. Will try and do it this Saturday if that is OK?
Thanks
You are welcome
Good video Alex.
If I'm NOT changing the brake pads, do I need to use the Gscan 2 tool?
I'm just wanting to change the rear bearings. No new brake pads. So my thought is maybe the caliper fits right back on.
What do you think?
Thanks!
Hi there. Thank you.
Yeah sometimes you can push them back on actually. But will be very tight going back on
And this is why I drive a 20+ year sh*tbucket LOL ......no need for a scan tool and battery charger to change brake pads
Anyway, thanks for the video Alex
Cheers buddy. Yeah I know what you mean.
I personally try and stay away from electronic handbrake... but unfortunately all Tiguan models got it :(
Scirocco on the other hand is awsome as its good old mechanical one :)
Well in your 20+ year sh*t bucket you need a special tool to turn the pistons of rear calipers in, in modern VAG cars with EPB you just need a cable with SW and once the EPB is disengaged you can just press the piston in by sou pry tool or bigger screw driver.
The advantage? Brake tool is quite proprietaly and you will use it only for one job, but the VCDS or Delphi tools are universal and you will use them for a lot more.
I would strongly reccomand anyone who have VAG car to buy VCDS, it will give you complete control over your car and allows you to do many modifications including turning off start stop nonsense and other stuff.
@@AlexTheGrumpyOne Its BS due to the electronic handbrake you actually have autohold feature which is must have especially when you live in big city, you dont want to play with your DSG all the time, just stop the car and the autohold EPB holds it, same in the uphill/downhill.
Its just a progress, so dont cry about it.
Hi Alex, thank you for sharing this great video. I will be replacing my rear brake caliper ( with EPB) on VW Passat B7 , using VCDS. My question is when do I need to bleed the brakes? Do I do that while the system is still in Service mode ( Parking brake open) or after exiting Service function (rear parking brake closed). Kind regards
Hi there. You are welcome :) I would let the fluid start coming out while in service mode and then do it again once out bud
@@AlexTheGrumpyOne Thank you Alex.
OK, so how do we do this without the scanner tool? What’s the field procedure?
Elsewhere, I’ve had people talk about pulling the electric brake off and using a nine mm wrench to turn a spline to screw the electronic brake in.
With pulling the battery and then doing this work?
Good video, I was wondering if you can bypass the diagnostic tool step simply by turning the vehicle on and disengaging the parking brake like in normal driving conditions. Would that get the same result?
Thank you. Personally never tried that. But I don't know if that would work because it needs to recalibrate the position of it so it knows where to stop and also it can mess up the auto hold I would think. So I would say no, but not 100% sure
Guitarist can you update? Looking to change mine and doing the same
Hi Alex, Thank you for the video, very well put together and well worth subscribing to your channel. I am looking for a small diagnostic tool to change the pads on a 2018 Tiguan. I am only an occasional DIY user so I don't need a professional diagnostic tool. I see you mentioned the Topdon range. Could you tell me which in the range will do this EPB function please?
Hi there. Thank you for your support.
Yes some of them have got that function.
May I know your budget?
@@AlexTheGrumpyOne Hi Alex, Wow! thanks for the quick reply, I wasn't expecting you to reply so quickly.
The car has a service plan at the main dealer, it went for a service and they want an additional £382.75 inc VAT to change the rear pads! I politely refused knowing in my head that I could easily do it for less than £50. That was before I knew about needing a diagnostic tool.
I suppose anything up to or just over the £300 mark will pay for itself on the first job. I work on cars maybe twice a year so would prefer to keep the price lower if I can as I don't really need to go too mad with a professional level diagnostic tool.
I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest tool money can buy, if I get more flexibility from spending a little more on a tool that I may be able to use on another make and model later then that would be money well spent.
Thanks once again for a well put together video.
Andy
No worries.
Yeah 380 is crazy for just rear pads....
Buy padgid if you can.
I will look in to it and come back with a few options for you 😀
Does the diagnostic tool need a special feature I should be looking for to be able to release the electronic hand brake?
Hi there. Yes it should have special function. EPC electronic parking control reset.
Hi Alex can this procedure be done without having the handbrake on?
Hi there. Handbrake should be off
Which way should the caliper bolts come off?
Hi sorry what do you mean?
Can you recommend any cheap diagnostic tools for a 2018 VW Tiguan?
What is the price limit?
@@AlexTheGrumpyOne £100-£200
what do you recomend for 2013 vw Tiguan 100,000 service
Full service including the coolant change, fuel filter, air, pollen and oil. Have a look if the glow plugs been done.
Wouldn't releasing the parking brakes do the same thing? Its just a pad replacement and a brake bleed. Do you need a diagnostic computer just to do a brake job?
No it wouldn't. Because realising the handbrake only undoes it very slightly.
@@AlexTheGrumpyOne well that makes doing a brake job at home cost prohibitive. These German cars are over complicated on even the most basic of maintenance. Thank you for the reply, I guess I'll just take it to the local dealership.
Unfortunately that is a bit of an issue on this one because of electronic handbrake function.
Hi , could you tell me best budget diagnostics tool to do this please??? I am only home user so don't want to pay through the nose for one thanks
Yep I can.
Have you had a look at Topdon range?
How much are you looking to spend?
@@AlexTheGrumpyOne cheapest to do job really as quoted 450 to change all round just trying to do it myself save a bit and do it correctly not more than 100 ideally
Cheaper the better for one off job as long as does it correctly
Why are you charging battery diagnostic tool disconnects from ecu when ignition is switched off
Because not all diagnostic tools gives you a procedure to switch the ignition off. Some you have to leave it on.
Just a safety procedure I would say :)
@@AlexTheGrumpyOne No its not because of that.
The battery charging is due to the EPB module which is very, very sensitive and you can actually brick it during this operation if the battery goes flat as the brakes are in special mode during the procedure . Because of that you need to keep the system charged.
Do i need the diagnostic tool to do this job
Yes to do it properly
i don't know where to start.... The positive thing is that colleague here is carring about squeek grease and checking the rubber protectors but my lord look at the state of those brakes! I mean driver must be choosing all kinds of crappy roads, muds, turf and other nasty ways. The results is all crap is getting under the pads and you all can see the poor discs. Pure ripples and ridges. You have to be more aware on how you treat your car. this is staggering.
OBD11
You don’t need the diagnostic tool…
No diagnostic tool needed for this vehicle
Which way you do it then?
It always been said that doing it manually can damage the calipers
@@AlexTheGrumpyOne doing it manually is safer, and causes less damage to the motor.
Who the hell is going to have a dignostic tool unless ur a fricken mechanic🤷🏽♂️. This sucks
I think you will be surprised. Specially knowing that it'd around £170 and will work on any car.
@@AlexTheGrumpyOne 170?? Try 995... WTF!! This is from the link in your description.
@@phulesickmate that's for the G-scan2 tool. You don't need that one. I only used it as its a professional tool that I got.
I will give you a link to Draper Tools one and that's only £170

Anybody with a MODERN vehicle. It's about essential as having a tire gauge. LOL
