I knew this by the Pointer Sisters. Like you, only recently I learned it was Springsteen. I'll bet, like me, you were soo not surprised. It's definitely his style. Still love the Sisters!
I don't know if you've heard the full story by now. But Bruce wrote it for Elvis Presley. It's not known whether Elvis ever heard it before he died, but he certainly never recorded it. So Bruce gave it to another rockabilly singer, called Robert Gordon. He recorded it in 1977 and released it on his 1978 album Fresh Fish Special. It's a great version and was very well received, but not all that commercially successful. Record producer Richard Perry introduced the song to the Pointer Sisters the next year and they recorded it for their Energy album. As a single, it hit number 2 in the US chart in February 1979, but made number one in several countries and the top ten in numerous others. A genuine worldwide hit.

This has to be one of BEST and most intimate deliveries of this spectacular Love Song. Bruce is the Secretariat of MUSIC - 31 lengths ahead of the PACK - Testosterone exemplified. He always embodies the emotion of the song on the delivery and his band mates enjoy whatever he has planned next. My Born to Run album reminds me of the Concert in Ottawa I was privileged to attend.
