  • David Crosby is one of Rock music's icons, a hero to the counter-culture movement of the sixties. As a founding member of the Byrds, Crosby helped popularize folk rock and as a founding member of Crosby, Stills and Nash he became one of the Woodstock generation's most strident voices. Born in Los Angeles to an Oscar winning cinematographer Floyd Crosby and Aliph Van Cortlandt, Crosby studied drama at Santa Barbara City College but dropped out to pursue a music career in New York. With The Byrds, Crosby enjoyed success when the Dylan cover Mr Tambourine Man made the top of the charts in both the U.S. and the U.K.. Never shy to share his political opinions, Crosby's outspoken views on Vietnam and chiefly the Warren Report led to his leaving The Byrds and forming another band with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash called simply, Crosby Stills and Nash later renamed to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young after Neil Young joined the band. Crosby's off stage exploits, a 9 month stint in a Texas jail on drug possession charges back in 1982 almost eclipsed his musical career, but he soon settled down and continued to do what he loved doing, making music and speaking out for justice and equality. He has authored three books, two of which, Long Time Gone and Since Then: How I Survived Everything and Lived to tell About it are autobiographical. Recently Crosby released a new solo effort entitled Croz.
Ken Rockburn spoke to David Crosby while on tour with CSN at the Embassy Theatre in downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana. www.fwembassythaetre.com

David really wanted you to ask him another question - a musical question, but you didn't, or wouldn't, or felt like you couldn't... you had to have any number of questions left... That left me as being the point I took away (as David pleaded, "...a musical question..."). It was a good interview - almost left nothing reasonable on the table - so that is one thing I may never know, one thing David would also have enjoyed settling his mind over...

I've been fortunate to attend concerts in London of the Byrds in the 60's, then Crosby solo in the mid 70's at an intimate venue with him happily chatting with the audience while he played acoustic guitar with no accompaniment and twice seen CSN perform at the Royal Albert Hall, the last time 2013 when they did an extended set to include the whole of their first album - almost 3 hours of first class performances which easily equalled the vocals of their early days.
I regret the split with Nash, but understand how hard it was for CSn to survive after the Nash book was published - as a duo they had been a great combination and popped up to add vocals with Dave Gilmour some years back on his solo work.
Now Dave has produced another golden period of solo work and it is my hope he will bring his Lighthouse tour to the UK, maybe I can see him again 50 years after the Byrds concert here....

I love this guys music and grew up in the late 60s and 70s listening to CSN & CNSY but David and so many of the musicians back then were rebels against capitalism and the establishment but enjoyed all the money they raked in without a second thought but preached to everyone else, in other words do as I say not do as I do hypocrisy. I respect his and others talent but they were hypocrites when it came to politics and other issues and sadly enough we still have entertainers and musicians today who talk the talk but will not walk the talk! Rock on Cros!

I have always loved Uncle Dave, and I love his new CD Croz, but in one sentence he says he doesn't get angry at people because that's when you stop learning and growing, and in the next he aggressively insults all of those with whom he disagrees with politically...

I will now proceed to entangle the entire area..., again.
    Almost cut my hair…, again,
Thought about it just the other day…,
It was getting kinda long..., again,
I coulda’ said it was in my way…,
    But I didn't, because I know why…,
I have the freedom to let my freak flag fly…,
Because I know, now, that I owe it, to everyone...
Must be because I re-awakened my innate Conscience…,
    And I'm feeling a whole lot like a ‘seer’…,
It increases my self-reliance like you wouldn’t believe…,
Like ‘Knowing’ what-all is possible in this world to achieve…,
So I know I'll not give in, not even an inch anymore to fear…,
’Cause my life path is now so stunningly clear…,
Because I know, now, that I owe it, to everyone...
‘Cause now I know I'm gettin’ myself together…,
And I’m ready for the challenge; whoever, wherever, whenever…,
And I found a place inside to laugh, and cry, and laugh all day, it seems…,
Because I've been separating a whole bunch of wheat from the chaff…,
And because I know, now, that I owe it, to everyone...
‘Cause now I know my self-reliance is better…,
I’m much more happy being on my enlightenment escalator…,
    Because I’ve found a place inside that’s exceptionally good…,
Soo muuch moore than any way they try for enlightenment in the ‘hood…,
Because I know, now, that I owe it, to everyone...
Sincerely, stephenkirby 91715 4:45 am pdt

    • @plrndl

    • @plrndl
      @plrndl Před 7 lety

I can't change the facts. With the exception of a few decadent western humans, all living things strive to reproduce themselves to the greatest extent that their environment permits. Consequently, most living things die from hunger or predation, rather than "old age". Conversely, the more you feed them, the more they reproduce. Hence my comment above.

Anyone whose net worth is estimated at 40 million dollars and says he doesn't have ANY money to produce his sons record is saying something that is beyond my comprehension - with recording technology the way it is today - you can be self produced for next to nothing. Hearing David Crosby say that makes me wonder whether anything else he says is true. He is one of my favorite artists of all time, and I respect him well, but many things he's said in this interview I find to be not only hard to believe, but in fact I know are not true. Sad - really. If it were me in his shoes - I would give me ego and tell the truth

After saying that, his latest album, Hear if you listen, is amazing, he doesn't deserve to sound so good! Lolx
