Thank you so much for this interview. I have such a deep understanding of what he was truly like. I'm in the process of reading his book for the 3rd time, and I binge watch him on CZcams constantly. On his very last album " Southern Blood" in his song My Only True Friend when he says "I hope you're haunted by the music of my soul when I'm gone",it dawned on me that those words are so true. I hear his songs in my head all through out the day, and at night when I'm trying to sleep. He was a true musician, a true talent, and a humble, sweet soul.

I was 13 when my heard the song whipping post at a junior high school dance. And I just was mesmerized. I had such a crush on Gregory almond I was Cher. My prayer for him in spirit is that he knows that his brother was always with him. ❤️

When I first got to L.A. I was hired on a movie crew to drive the big vans called Honeywagons...I was sent to a hotel on Wilshire BLVD in Beverly Hills to pick up Greg Allman and his (girlfriend at the time) and drive them to the movie set...it was a 40 min drive give or take, it was 1988 a low budget straight to video horror/slasher film named "Rush Week".
My memory of pulling up to the hotel and then seeing Gregg Allman for the first time was surreal. As he and his girlfriend approached the Honeywagon, he said hello in a very soft voice, I opened the door for him and his girlfriend, they settled in, I shut the door and remember as I was driving, I would look in the review mirror and find him looking at me... Our eye contact was frequent, and electric. I was very shy too, I was 25 back then and resembled Andie Macdowell quite a bit.
When we arrived at the set
I opened the door and he reached for my hand and said Thank you while he melted me with his very demure eye contact. My God he was beautiful!
At the time I knew his name, and knew very little of his music, so I was not starstruck, but rather he put me in a soft trance like state...he exuded sexapeal out of his soul.
He was magnetic inside and out.
Only now do I really get the depth of talent, heart and soul.
RIP Greg, you are missed and loved very much.
I wish I could have gotten to know you better.

This interview confirmed some beliefs I have had on Gregg's musical choices and song writing style. His solo work in the 70s along with his live album is his best work. One Way Out and his own memoir document his unhappiness, at times, with long guitar solos when he would have preferred hearing his songs performed the way he heard them. He went along with his brother's visions out of respect and because of his adoration, but after Duane died, Gregg was free to play his own songs on his solo albums the way he heard them. His solo work showed a strong love of horns and choirs, a jazz funky element that was not the Allman Brother sound but Gregg's. Another comment I found insightful was describing Gregg's lyrics as "minimalist. " I wouldn't cut you loose baby if I could." Tell me where has my faith gone? Has it walked out on me?" HIs stamp as a song writer was that simplicity of lyric, the strong blues melody with his superb voice. Ain't Wastin' Time No More, Come and Go Blues, Dreams, Oncoming Traffic, and Whipping Post - won't they go down as the best with the best? My opinion is that long after we are dead his songs will be mentioned with Stormy Monday, Trouble No More, Statesboro Blues and the blues canon that inspired Gregg and Duane from the get go. Great interview - thank you.

I'm with you Scott Sharrard! Playin Up A Storm is one of my all time favorites and, I think the most overlooked album on the planet! Who else could do the "Brightest Smile" and add the depth and charm, that he does so well? Laid Back was great and kudos to Johnny Sandlin for putting together all those elements you (collectively) spoke of. It's a beautiful solo debut album. The Carnegie Live Tour was a different concept, but I love it's energy. Also we get to hear for the first time "Oncoming Traffic". To me, he was channeling Ray Charles with his own touch, of course. Who else could not only write a song like that but dare sing it?! He obviously felt solid in doing so and I'm glad he did. In Low Country Blues we get a look at how flexible Gregg is as an artist! What a tremendous album that is! If Gregg was born a bit earlier, I think, imho, he could have held his own with artists of the 50's, orchestra and all, and then turn around and hold his own with just himself and a guitar. Now what was I saying about a favorite album? I'm sorry I haven't been able to listen to the complete Southern Blood, as of yet. Sigh. Except for your collaboration, which is so heartfelt, beautiful and bittersweet. Thank you.

As Greg has said , saying southern rock is like saying “rock”rock ,
White and black southern music “is” rock music , the allmans music is the natural progression (of the times) of America itself , and the next real thing will “always” look back to its home when the world is at its worst, and guess what , like a mother waiting at home, it will always be there .

Awesome interview! Interesting that Gregg didn't assume the role of leader after Duanes' death. I would have thought that was a given. Sounded like he was fine with it though and in the end he was the leader of his own band.
