  • Bindi means drop, point, particle, and it is just that, a point here. It is also known as tika.
Indian wisdom tells us that the human body is divided into seven energy points, which we know as chakras, which start at the base of the spine and end at the top of the head. The sixth chakra, known as the third eye, is here, between the eyebrows, and is believed to be the channel through which humanity opens spiritually to the divine. We have two eyes to see the outside world, but we have this third eye to see beyond. The Indians consider that by stimulating this point they improve their receptivity or intuition.
According to traditional Indian medicine we have three channels where energies flow, and they are known as nadis. Basically the two lateral nadis merge with the central nadi, which passes through all the chakras. On this path the third eye signifies the end of duality. In Ayurvedic medicine this point is usually stimulated by applying a kind of paste made with certain herbs. And this point is the one that is usually visualized in many of the meditations.
Traditionally, bindi powder is made with mercury sulfide that is applied with a sticky wax paste. Sandalwood, ash, turmeric, clay or charcoal paste can also be used, and it is normal to see a grain of rice stuck in the bindi. The substances used in the bindi refresh this point of the sixth chakra and stimulate it. Currently there are bindis of all colors, shapes, sizes, and even accompanied with jewels, many times to match the clothing. They are used to enhance the beauty of women. There are very practical self-adhesive bindis.
We could say that the red bindi symbolizes the married woman, in addition to symbolizing honor, love and prosperity. Black color single woman. The yellow color tells us about prosperity or wealth. When we see a blue bindi it tells us about wisdom and is usually worn by old wise men venerated by their people. Green symbolizes luck and hope. The white bindi symbolizes purity and spirituality. It is curious that Indonesia, which is the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, has the island of Bali, where the majority religion is Hindu, and there the bindis are usually white, instead of red or black as in India.
