    As a kid, way back in the 1960's the Buck was about the most expensive knife in the department store and it was stainless steel. A generation grew up pretty much assuming that that was all there was. I carried a WW2 PAL RH 36 so I never sprang for a Buck, but I get where fancy city people who didn't know better would think that the Buck was all there was. (I'm thinking that some hardware and sports stores also carried Case knives, but most young people didn't buy knives in hardware stores.) So now that I'm about as old as some folk's grandfathers, I know where the legend comes from and how it got started and the legend was born in the department store, not the back woods. Like I said, I was there and you didn't see too many folks hunting for their dinner carrying fancy stainless steel knives back then.
    As to 440 steel, that was the "super steel" of the day, when it came to stainless. That said, old times at that time wouldn't touch the stuff.
    BTW, I still use that RH 36 to open steel cans when the can is dented and my can opener can't do the job.

    I went to my local Harbor Freight today, after checking stock online, and found that the shelf was empty. I asked a clerk to check stock and they said they always run out of that product early because it's the most stolen product in the store. Maybe some thieves have been watching your videos. LOL

    You are right about Buck design not being that old and it coming from other makers designs. The statement about it competing with KaBar for military is incorrect Buck is not on list of those who submitted for test and KaBar traces history furthet back. I also mske knives and do not find it hard to beat Buck in edge retention mine will dress, skin, and cut up multiple elk before losing edge and needing touch up.

    You might test a green River knife and an Old Hickory knife side by side with the Buck. Both are High Quality high carbon steel with proper hardening and tempering. A lot of butchers and ranchers are still using the for a reason.

      I had an old hickory when I was younger. Had no sheath, I'd wrap it in a rag and stick it in some bailing twine I had holding up my pants. On paper, it should the green river. Those two knives are about as price friendly as it gets haha.

      @dennishein2812 Před 2 lety +1

      Older Bucks had better steel. The ones I had back in the 70s could gut and skin at least 4 animals before needing touch up. I also had an Old Timer that did nearly as well. Always had good luck with Buck but the old ones were better. For EDC I’d carry the Gordon.

As an example, I wore Levi's only. Wore then for many many years. From a young age and into adulthood. Then one day I heard that Levi's closed their last plant in america and they moved to mexico. I never bought a pair again. Back then I had other choices. Now ? Nope, not much choice at all. Would love a knife from you but sadly, I just cant afford it. Best to you.

Used it like a flipping prybar as a kid. I bought an old one and sent it in to buck and they fixed it up and sharpened it for free. This guy cannot handle near the capacity buck has. The right tool for the a Buck 420 HC would be a diamond or ceramic in the field. My dad used to amaze me with his oil stone and soft Pennsylvania Queen carbon steel razor sharp Stockman. Then I discovered Vickers Rockwell hardness scale. If you want to strop up a soft razor edge use a soft steel. If you want harder with better edge retention. IMO the 420HC is optimized with the industrial BOS treatment, is every rendition perfect nope it is mass produced, but with the Forever Warranty, holds a good edge strops up pretty easy on ceramic or diamond.
    Your claim about your CPM 154 is intriguing and by Jimminey buy American . I will head over to your website and give you the benefit of the doubt and excoriate you if product doesn’t meet expectations if that is fair. I admire confidence even if it is borderline akin to arrogance, a custom smith should absolutely be able to “out value” a production knife.
    Well treated 8Cr13MoV is better than poorly treated CPM S30V, the Chinese probably do former better than the latter. The Chinese create a hoax when they try to substitute their version of VG10 for Japanese version out of the Seki forges. The Japs produced ATS 34 that was erroneously compared to American 154 CM and it really wasn’t close for edge retention back in the day.
    So I’m heading over to check out your wares.

      This is not to criticize You
      You don't strop with diamond or ceramic. That's honing.
      If you strop my blades with those That's a good way to shorten the life of the edge. Strop with the rough side of leather and to sweeten it add some white, green, or black polishing compound. My cpm154cm will pass though an elk and come out shaving sharp on the other side with this method.
