- This is a shootout between two supposedly similar inverters, both rated at 1500W and both pure sine. The Aims inverter is a name brand and the OSP Tiger Claw is a lesser known contender. Who will win?
Just want to say that I absolutely love your vids, especially the inverter repair ones. The inverter review vids are priceless to those who actually have clue about power quality and equipment limitations. Keep up the great work.
I really enjoy these videos. Alot of really useful info. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.
Thank you for doing these inverter reviews. You havr help me tremendously!
Phillip Slough I
i really like your reviews on cheap inverters. Especially because you give credit where credit is due. Many people who do reviews get in a mindset that the product is very good and only good, or very bad and only bad. great review indeed.
hey could you use a capacitor between the batteries and the inverter to help deal with Surge, I thought about doing that because I'm going to convert a chest freezer to a refrigerator and I thought I would use one of those capacitors (the type that kids use on their high performance car stereos these days), between the inverter and the battery to help deal with surge at startup so as to not take my battery pack down so hard do you think that'd be a good idea or a bad idea?
I have an OSP Tiger Claw that was working fine. One day I walked in the house, turned on the inverter until the fans stopped and turned on my ionizer which is 65 watts. The inverter smoked! I had been using this combination for a year. The inverter stills works but only with a five watts Load LED light or similar.
The Serge on the refrigerator exceeds the wattage of the inverter
I have an Aims that looks like that blue one same rating. Then I also have an Aims 5000 watt rating inverter, but it is modified sine wave output. Was hoping to run my 120v 1/2hp deep well pump, or larger power tools like a skill saw, on the 5000 watt unit and save the blue one for my computer and sensitive electronics (small battery chargers, etc.). Have not tried it yet.
Now, my blue 1500w Aims pure sine wave unit was made for an RV and it also has a 120vac cord and plug for shore power and will charge your 12v bank @ 10 amps with a controlled charge AND it is supposed to through feed the load circuits giving more capacity than the output as an inverter. Sort of like a heavy duty UPS. As another commenter said, the blue Aims pure sine unit is claimed to have a real clean sine wave.
Keep in mind, the inverters efficiency goes down as the load goes up, so in reality, it is only putting out about 3000 watts, which is what it's rated for. Truth in advertising! It would be interesting to take it apart, and see what the rating of the fuses are. My 3,000 watt inverter is only fused for 320 amps, far below the 368 amps that was drawn by that inverter. Keep in mind, fuses can handle more than their rating for short periods of time, which is the limiting factor for how long it can surge. It's calibrated pretty close to the surge rating of the fuses.
Where has this been? No new videos in a long time
Great tests knurlgnar! Impressive on the Tiger Claw for surge power! Really for the price point its impressive. I doesnt have good PFC though. If you have cfl or led lights powered without a resistive load they tend to flicker a bit.
The one on the left is optimal for super sensitive electronics. It's not a beast. I have one that is separate from my main grid, specifically for my sensitive electronics. Put an oscilloscope on both and you'll see the difference.
Wonderful work, thanks!
i cant find the tiger claw 1.5kw inverter here in the uk either on amazon or ebay . so i rekon tose brands are limited to usa ? my guess
Resistive loads are unity power factor; magnetizing current for autotransformers and inrush for induction motors are not.
I have a Tiger Claw that puts out 105V. Any ideas on what it could be? Any chance I can pay to send it to you to take a look at If I'd be willing to pay you? I really like this power inverter and they are no longer being sold
I really enjoyed this...I bought the 2000 Aims inverter/charger (24 v)...itll be here Monday...I looked at the 1500 watt ones but decided theyre just a bit small and its just too far from 12 to 120 so isn't it just lost in waste heat? To run my air fryer 1430 watts it will only use 35 amps out of each of my 4 batteries on 24 v...hopefully more efficient..I tried it on a 12 volt 2000 watt inverter but it drains my batteries like mad lol..
24V will definitely be easier to work with, and if you want to run a 1430W air fryer a 1500W inverter is too small so I think you made a good choice that way.
that tiger claw looks good
Great informative videos and have learned a lot. Would you know how a diode isolater is hooked to a car altanater. Looked at a lot of videos on this, however they fail to show the detail on the exact wire for the connection. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon.
Installation manuals should show the exact connection diagrams. The specific technical details will never be presented, but if you connect them as specified by the manufacturer they should be adequate for most purposes. Keep in mind that these isolators will have a .5V to 1.0V drop and so your batteries will be undercharged.
la bateria de +4v no se carga con 600A,se carga con 133A.
If I am plugging my refrigerator in my RV into the inverter, I want it to reset and soft-start. I want it on, I don't want to have to manually recycle the power. The Aims would be my choice.
what is the battery voltage when u have 370 Amps?
Looking for something for a fridge and deep freeze. Have you seen the Power Techon units? Are they copies of the Aims?
If I'd like to minimize my cost per year, is it better to buy a cheap inverter like a Tiger Claw 1500 or more expensive inverter like a Xantrex 2000?
you could of put 2 120v heaters in series to get 240v which i think would be more watts from the inverter
Not sure what you mean. These are 120V inverters so if I put the heaters in series I would get 1/4 the wattage draw of putting them in parallel.
I have a pst 300watt samlex inverter that I really like if I can save up might get a bigger samlex.
Dude your hand saw needs almost 3 times the wattage on start up, both your inverters can't handle it, you need more power or your case a 2000 watt unit or 20amps output but Aims makes a very good product I own 2 10k units running at 48v for over 5 years never any issues, one runs a house and other my full work shop and all my shop power tools.
how mach send me the price POR FAVOR DESEO SABER QUE PRECIO TIENE EN DOLLARES PUESTO EN CANCUN
Tiger Claw is pretty decent and i had a aims like that and it was not too good. It could run my fridge though.
What kind of power were you supplying to the inverters? I have the same 1500 Pure Sine Aims inverter on a 3 battery bank and 1/0 awg wire. After I saw your video I had to try the wife's hair dryer and ran it with no issues. I use mine nearly every day for power tools including circular saw... So I also tested it on just one battery and it fails you may not be giving the inverters the recommended power AMPS and draw from just 1 battery. Also you drew 368 DC Amps and that has nothing to do with the AC wattage output from the inverter 368 on the DC input amps does not equal 3700 AC watts?
+James Johnston you are correct....the funny thing about this video is the inverter is kicking off from the instant battery drain taking it down to 11 volts not the inverter unable to power the appliance....he needs more batterys doing this test to keep the volts and amps up to get a true test
James Johnston I
I have a cheap modified sine wave inverter its only a 1200 watt it will run my saw. and it says its 14 amp. I don't know for how long it will run though. like if it's in surge.
I see alot of UPS to inverter hacks... It is'nt possible to turn it around does it? A inverter into a UPS.
hi, I was wondering what is the best pure sine wave inverter? Not the most expensive but decent quality. I am interested in 3000 watts. I want to use it with solar panels.
samlex, thor, go power
Do you have any video about the best 300-350w pure sine inverters in terms of price and performance? Either from china or anywhere else?
Cheers
Can you answer me plz?
I do not currently have any videos that specifically compare 300 to 350w pure sine inverters.
***** thanks mate .... do you suggest any 300-350w pure sine inverters in the market I intend to use it for small solar system? also are you intend to do any videos in this regards?
cheers
Iam a NPD
The only one I have personally inspected is the PowerBright 300W unit. It seems well put together and I had little bad to say about it. I have a review of it out there. I certainly cannot say it is the best one but I found it acceptable based on what I saw.
***** thanks a lot for you time, I'll try to check out later, also wish you could do some reviews on new models in the market ( include the Chinese once )
peace
you could of used a kettle ? 2kw to 3kw
Do you still have that Aims?
How about making some new videos? There are a lot of new no name Pure Sine Inverters that need to be tested.
AIMS says you need to use 2000w or bigger for refrigerators, heaters, microwaves, etc, I would still rather have an AIMS over that import off brand.
AIMS says that because their products cannot do what is advertised. PowerJack says you need an inverter rated for 10x the refrigerator rating on some of their products. Again, because they don't actually do what they are advertised to do. A quality 1500W inverter will run any refrigerator just fine.
hi knurlgnar i have a question for you, i have just bought a cheap inverter off ebay modified sine wave 300w to run my gf hair straighteners that are 35w on the label. they turn on but keep flashing the fault light. any ideas what is wrong. the inverter works ok with my laptop, i am in the uk so is a 240v inverter.
The hair straightener may use a dimming circuit that isn't compatible with MSW. Unless she's really attached to that particular one I'd recommend trying out a different straightener from a big retailer that accepts open box returns.
hi thanks for the reply, there ghd ones that she has, so i might buy some cheap ones off ebay and see if they work. but if not i might have to buy a better inverter :(
xadamx
Hey, do what it takes to keep her happy even if you disagree. :) It will be a lot cheaper in the long run, no? Best of luck!
@knurlgnar24 which one did u like best?
The Tiger Claw by far overall.
knurlgnar24, I am learning much from your channel, for which I thank you. I have a Sunforce 2500 watt pure sine inverter which is used as emergency power. I use an 8 12 volt NAPA deep cycle (not sure of rating) battery bank. I wired an entirely separate from power company panel with circuits to run outlets in a few rooms. I color coded the face plates to distinguish inverter from main service receptacles.
Do you have any reviews of the Sunforce 2500?
I am a redundancy freak. I saw your Tiger Claw 1500 review and comparison reviews. A look at prices show both 1500 and 3000 watt Tiger Claws at about $200. I have previously fallen for the cheaper bigger traps, so I ask your opinion of the 3000 watt pure sine Tiger Claw.
As a side note. I have a pretty, single granddaughter about your age; I would love to have a grandson-in-law with your knowledge. :)
CAN U TELL ME WHAT SIZE INVERTER I NEED TO RUN A HALF HORSE MOTOR.
+Alter Kater you need much more than that though due to surge
+Alter Kater you need much more than that though due to surge
***** yeah but they draw a surge of up to 4 times the rated power on startup

Maybe it is 10.5v or less!
Doing an inverter comparison, when you’re getting voltage drops down to low 11v, is pretty pointless. Clearly your battery supply & wiring gauge is inadequate.
AIMs inverters build quality is night and day difference, over that Chinese tiger inverter.
AIMs inverters are night and day different. Yes. They are TERRIBLE! I'd pick a cheapo chinese inverter any day over that garbage. And it is extremely important for an inverter to operate properly on a battery voltage around 11V. If it doesn't that means the inverter is designed poorly and there are a good list of reasons why that is so. Do you work for AIMs or something? I've never seen even one product from them that was passable.
@@knurlgnar24 your chinese garbage inverters only work for a split second, because the safety factor is non existent. The reason the AIM's won't even try to turn on when you're getting those massive voltage drops, is due to the low voltage disconnect. When your voltage drops, your amps increase. Good way to start a fire with your already undersized wiring, with those chinese inverters.
Properly sized wire, and a battery bank to handle the amperage draw, and you don't have issues. People have been running AIMs inverters for years on end, non stop, without issues. These are properly installed systems.
Some redneck install in the garage with shitty wires and old marine deep cycle batteries, of course there is going to be issues. Those China inverters could care less if they burst into flames.
Not promoting AIMs, just using common sense here.
@@knurlgnar24 can your cheapo inverter pull 3x it’s rated load, without breaking a sweat? 😂 My 3000w aims will do 9000w bursts for up to 20 seconds. I was running a shopvac while cycling a miter saw, zero issues. Pulling 350 amps.
@@knurlgnar24 So, what inverter would you like to compare to my Aims 3000W hybrid inverter? I’ve pulled over 400amps from it, thing is a monster.
Do you have an email address I could send pics of the fried cap and location on this inverter I am working on?
oke!!!!!

Doing "Dork stuff" like this is proof in reproducible results. I have had hard assed clients that actually try this to avoid paying the bill or just plain argue. It's good to test inductive versus resistored loads. You can look the user in the eye and say exactly what it will and WONT do. Not that they will remember it or re-read the manual, and probably do the wrong thing anyway.

What is the fridge watt??
