    Ulta needs to make the actual shopping experience (both in store and online) feel luxurious. The stores are so cheaply setup, the website is a joke, the GWPs may seem like good values but are never things I want, and the $35 minimum free shipping requirement just kills it all for me

      I actually use L'Occitane hand cream and it's a bit pricey imo but it works so well for me. I have very dry hands. It's $13 at Ulta for a travel size tube. I went to the L'Occitane store and if you bring in an empty tube you get 10% off your next purchase which isn't a huge discount but it's something. I haven't tried other L'Occitane products except the almond shower oil and I didn't like it. Funny enough, one of my favorite foundations is Estée Lauder

    I have 500$ in my ulta account because I shop there if they have the item vs sephora because I'd rather have cash instead of points. Sephora has completely minimized what rouge customers receive now which is also frustrating. All we really have is the rouge gift card and we shop 1st twice a year. Ulta gives me gifts throughout the year.
    One thing I will say is I wish ulta would revamp the application because it's not clear as to what's new etc. I also wish they would give us a yearly rate for same day delivery and 20% off on everything instead of certain items.

    • @SofiaSeesBeauty
      @SofiaSeesBeauty  Před 29 dny +1

      I hear you but I think the point is that they want you coming into the store more than twice a year ;) a loyalty program is designed to generate repeat purchasers

    • @SofiaSeesBeauty
      @SofiaSeesBeauty  Před 29 dny +2

      When companies design these programs, they are piloted just like any other major app feature. Their design and release will be entirely data driven. So while many will say "I don't like games", Ulta will continue to release whatever performs well engagement-wise with their test groups and then iterate from there. I think they will keep their usual spend-and-earn program but have this as an opportunity to engage their most loyal customers or those who want to save more. And if the games don't drive repeat rate? They will get rid of it.

    I did follow the Amyris story, and I wanted to point out one important thing: all of these brands were given the opportunity to buy back their own brand. The man who started JVN simply bought his brand. Rosie could have done the same thing, but chose not to. Like you pointed out, she is wealthy. If she really wanted to remain committed to the Rose Inc. brand, she could have. I think she sort of "rode along" and waited to see who would buy her brand, and then determined if she wanted to work with them. She didn't like the new owner, obviously, and then bailed. She could have handled it differently, but didn't. Just my thoughts on the matter. 💞

    I’m Ulta Diamond, but miss me with that silly bs. It’s giving Starbucks 2010s.
    I used to do the Dior thing, but it was a bit more sophisticated. It also malfunctioned often and I grew tired of it. I want brands to invest in direct benefits to me. How much did Ulta dump into this silliness? Yet they can’t seem to ship product without breaking stuff. Let’s focus there first 😅

    I think the Ulta games are very clever psychologically. There is more interaction with Ulta in general, besides from shopping/browsing for products. And because you subconsciously feel you really earned your rewards by achieving something instead of automatically collecting them. Thus convincing yourself it’s oke to buy something. And also maybe attracting people that normally shop elsewhere because they don’t have to start spending a lot to already get some rewards.

  • @susanfox4058
    @susanfox4058 Před 29 dny +4

    Hi Sofia!
    I’m discouraged by the reasons that Rosie left Rose Inc. How awful for her to have her company overtaken that way! While I’m not obsessed with clean beauty, I valued her brand and actually liked some of the products. Although I normally purchase luxury beauty like Dior, Chanel, Tom Ford, CdP, etc.., I frequently purchased some of her line. Very sad!!
    As for Ulta, they invited me to be a part of that customer club, but all I ever received were surveys to complete and I was not sent any gifts or incentives. I’m actually not crazy about Ulta since they suddenly took away over $400 in points from me, saying they expired. I was saving up for a Dyson! Customer Service refused to do anything but now it says that for some levels, the points don’t expire. While I still order some from both Ulta and Sephora, I mostly order from them during sales events and do my main shopping from the brand websites and from department stores when they have sales. With so many places to shop, stores should have the best customer service possible, in my opinion!
    Thanks for the informative video!!
    Susan

    We used to have a L’Occitane store in Baton Rouge, although it has since closed. Like you, I really liked some of their products, and was actually pleasantly surprised by their skin care products. The skin care products were not cheap, however, and it always seemed to me to be geared more to the older shopper. Old people (a group of which I claim membership) don’t like going to the mall, however, which is where our store was located, albeit in one of the satellite areas. I don’t know what the national stats are on that, but things might have looked different had they moved to the newer shopping experiences where you can park near the store. Maybe that trend is more popular in the South than the northern states. While this is not directly related to the loyalty programs, I was really amused by Sephora and Ulta competing for customers. Before the Sephora sale, Ulta had their month long sale where they had 50% off a limited number of products each day. One of the things I was going to pick up at Sephora went on sale for half price at Ulta, so I was headed out to pick it up. The last thing I did before I left was check my email. Sephora was obviously reading the Ulta sale and matching it every day, because there was my product advertised for one day only at Sephora for half price. Sephora won that round. Then, right before the Sephora sale, Ulta sent out an email with 20% off anything. I was only going to get 15% at Sephora, so that was a no brainer. I haven’t been able to figure out why, but for some reason I just don’t enjoy the Ulta shopping experience as much as Sephora. The best I can come up with is that the Sephora employees seem more customer centered to me - although that could just be specific to the two stores in my experience. I saved and saved my Sephora points and finally traded in 2,500 for a $100 gift card. I don’t know how often that is offered, but I heard about it on CZcams and just sat on my points until it showed up. I would probably play games for that sort of payoff, but not as a general rule. I love your balanced and informed videos, Sophia!

    The Ulta games don’t really interest me except if there is an incentive to reach a 20% off coupon or 10x the points on a purchase. I always try to shop smart there during the point multipliers to get to that $125 cash redeeming reward. ❤

I also think a lot of more grown women like us love to play puzzles so there's a good opportunity there. Again it sounds like this is more of a bonus for customers who want to have a little fun and earn even more points

    Wow, this episode covered a lot of ground! Regarding L'Occitane, I associate the brand with store closings and never seeing anyone in stores that are open. I equate the Estee Lauder brand with an older generation (and I'm in my early 50s). Only Advance Night Repair has intrigued me. I am a long-time Bobbi Brown customer and they have some of my holy grail products like correctors, concealers, cream eyeshadow sticks, mascaras, lipsticks, and brush cleanser. They recently reformulated their blush and bronzer lines, expanded the Vitamin Enriched line, introduced Long-Wear Cream Eyeliners, and Marc Regan returned to the brand - all positives in my view. With respect to Ulta, I have zero interest in playing games or making purchases for points (same with Sephora 'challenges'). I'm not a regular Ulta shopper and these incentives will not entice me to become one. I want points that convert to a decent cash reward, or generous discounts, that's all.

    I have used and use L'Occitane for years (their Almond line is gorgeous ❤). They are doing well here in Europe, but the problem is that they discontinued some of their bestsellers (for example, their famous Karite serum-the new one they released last year is not even close to the old one). The second issue is that they don't have strong marketing (especially toward the Gen Z population); on second thought, they almost don't have any marketing at all... 😅😅😅

    I really love the rose Inc blush - nuanced colors, tenacious but easy to manipulate formula. But it is the only product in the line that worked for me. I missed the chance to get more half off when Sephora liquidated their stock and not ready to purchase another at full price. A shame, but good for her for stepping away when she didn’t necessarily have to.

    I was enticed and I bought a 10 ml travel size and wanted to smell the rose/jasmine. I don't think it is a cash grab. I think Bella Hadid is legit especially with her not being able to use ordinary perfume due to alcohol. I think many people are doing that now. Michelle Pfeiffer just came out with her perfume line with Henry Rose for her children who she wanted clean perfume for her children.

    I love this series
    Re fragrances, as a professional woman who is into fragrances, none of these releases inspire me. They are most likely aimed at a younger audience. I suspect the travel sizes will do well because the price won't "sting" that much. But this whole fragrances infused with skincare infuriates me. Similar to make-up. It has FRAGRANCE by definition if you have sensitive skin or eczema etc, it won't be good for you!
    In any case, it's interesting to watch this space and see it unfold. Similar to Balmain, feels like a meh release as well. All of this is expensive, even for the luxury shopper, so would customers like to buy true and tried luxurious products or would they jump on a brand new release from new brands? Remains to be seen.

    Hi Sofia,
    Yes, 99% of celebrity brands are cash grab and I have 0 interest in buying perfume/makeup or skincare from them.
    I never had any product from L’Occitane but I think my mother used to have.
    In my opinion Sol de Janeiro is a brand mostly for teenagers. Every time I was close to the shelves with their products I saw teenagers very excited to try and buy something.
    I never had anything from Rose Inc., so I not affected about the changes.
    I don’t like Charlotte Tilbury makeup and I am not interested in her new perfumes.
    If the new Balmain perfume will be available in Australia I am interested to try it.
    Thanks for sharing!🙂

    I love L’Occitane’s almond body cream and their almond body/hand oil. They’re so luxurious and healing. I also love their hand creams and often given them in goodie bags for friends. They’re always well received. As for Ulta, I think their Target presence has been a bust. There’s just no way they can offer an extensive array of products in such a limited space-a space that is cordoned off and surrounded by the rest of Target’s much larger cosmetics and toiletries section. It’s like their location and setup were an afterthought and that Target wasn’t really interested in having them there. Bottom line: If I need something from Ulta, that’s where I’ll go; not to Target. As for the silly games, I’m not interested. My taste in fragrance has evolved throughout the years so I find things like CT and BH entering that sphere as more of a cash grab than anything else. They’re targeting the tweens, teens, and twenty-somethings.

    I used to shop l’occitane often, until they discontinued my favs and didn’t replace with anything I preferred. I’ll shop ulta over Sephora when they have the same product I want because their points rewards are so much better than Sephora’s. I’m now seeing some brands moving from Sephora to ulta (Natasha denona), plus brands like Chanel and Mac at ulta make me shop less at Macy’s. Agree with other poster, they need to revamp stores, website, customer service and then they’ll far surpass sephora. I have no interest in celebrity perfumes, haven’t liked any of them. Bella’s scents are not new. I have several similar ones on my desk right now purchased at specialty stores. I tried Rosie’s products in store and liked them. Their price point and negative reviews stopped me from purchasing.

I don’t think that means she was in behind the scene meetings about upcoming products. I think it’s weird Charlotte released a perfume line. They released Bella right when she started talking about Palestine.
    Weird Rosie deleted her post. She was the face of hourglass cosmetics before, would be interesting to compare how they parted ways and compare to Bella.

    I absolutely love L’Occitane! I’ve used their shampoo & conditioner forever and I believe that their products have allowed me to grow long, strong very healthy hair. I’ve used different hair oils from other companies, bc L’Occitane seems to keep pulling it off the website, reformulating it etc… The hair oil they have out now, I really like. I think their products feel like a special treat & feel like a little luxury. The box store closed down at my mall & I’ve had to purchase solely online. I feel if L’Occitane made their products more accessible, I think that they would definitely sell & customers would be really happy with the products. People ask me all the time what products I use on my hair and when I say, “L’Occitane” people look at me like they’ve never heard of the company. I hope this company thrives & never goes out of business.

    I am not really inspired by the “luxury” or celebrity perfume releases. I usually cherry pick them from retailers in the grey market. I like to get my nose on the new lines. I don’t buy them blindly. Sometimes the perfumer uses ideas from their niche compositions.

    I don’t have a problem playing games to increase the amount of points I can earn at Ulta. With their current system, points essentially equate to spendable cash, so if it’s just more interaction they want, I’m ok with it. I recently purchased hair products because they had a 10x points promotion. I did actually need to replenish my shampoo and conditioner, but when I couldn’t decide between 2 brands, I ordered them both knowing that they would be used eventually. Those purchases gave me about $30 to spend now at Ulta. Wish Sephora would get on this train, lol.

Why would a brand go after someone who is tight with their wallet? It's the younger customer with more time and money to spend on treats where brands are seeing their growth. Gen Z plays more online puzzles than any other generation to date. Ulta needs to find ways to boost product discovery and loyalty with that group. There is some degree of operational control because investors invest in companies to get financial returns but they are still minority investors. Entrepreneurs can loose money because they are not negotiating favorable terms. There is a reason for this because the company is not doing as well. The money that investors give represent someone's hard earned money. A lot is at stake and they will protect their investment. Entrepreneurs overvalue their own skill and their company and the risk that it takes to build. It's a partnership and vilifying investors in this case is not fair.
