The older woman shown applauding them sang the original song (back in the day). It looked like she and the audience enjoyed the cover a lot. Great reaction!

I love this cover so much, but no one makes a reaction to it (unfortunately), so thank you very much for that! They have a comeback soon))

This performance is so beautiful...I can't stop smiling whenever I listen to it.

This is such a good cover, and I think you're right the original is a very popular trot song that was originally sung by that older woman who was reacting to their performance. Also, I believe they're due for a comeback some time in April, tho I don't know if they've announced a specific date yet or what exactly they'll be releasing.

Ok, so I actually managed to watch the full episode for this on viki and have all the deets. The show is a competition where current Korean artists perform covers of songs by a legend of the Korean music industry they feature for each ep. The whole thing emphasizes vocal ability, so no lip syncing and minimal backing tracks allowed. Consequently, they tend to heavily favor soloists or classically trained groups like Forestella and La Poem, so XH didn't win either of their appearances.
The original singer is Patti Kim, they dedicated 3 whole eps to her. It's not actually trot, though from what I could gather of her singing style she clearly had a strong influence on trot. She was actually a ballad singer who was basically the Celine Dion of korea thru the 60s and 70s. First korean singer to perform at a ton of foreign venues like the Sidney Opera House, as well as the first one to be invited to Japan after korean independence. She's a pretty cool lady. Her first husband wrote and produced pretty much all her hits, and they actually continued to work together after they got divorced bc it was amicable, which was very novel and daring back in 70s Korea, some credit them with reducing the stigma on divorce. She retired 10 years ago, and this was her first public appearance in all that time. She did a few performances on the show, and the last one was super emotional. I never cry at these things but even I got teary-eyed, she clearly missed being on stage so much.
This song is one of her more popular ones to be covered, as the marching rhythm makes it easy to sing along to and get the crowd going. XH actually chose it because none of them are originally from Seoul, but they all met and are working towards their dreams in Seoul so they wanted to pay homage to the city. Patti called their performance cute, they were impressed that she pronounced their group name so well, and backstage she gave them a big grandma hug lol. The other contestants were also very impressed, especially with Jooyeon of course. Though they were also fascinated with him bc he's from Daegu which I guess has a particular accent they all found very endearing.
