Most are missing the point it seems. The symphony is his students; not the music. The dialogue even points it out and still people miss it. If you think being a teacher is about your own life's work you are wrong. Teaching is about the people you inspire and the lives you touch. I think most of us can name 2-3 teachers throughout our school years that in some way inspired us to be who we are. I know I can.
+Araghos Exactly. This is one of my favorite movies because although it is superficially about music, it's really a statement about life itself. When you're young, you have all these grand plans for what you're going to do with your life and it often doesn't turn out that way. But that doesn't mean you didn't lead a fulfilling life. I think it was no accident that this film included the song Beautiful Boy, with the lyrics "Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans". Mr. Holland never reached the musical fame he dreamed of - just like Rowena, his dream receded into night - but he helped generations of children grow up to be better people.
Exactly. It's superficially about music, but really, it's about life, hence the reason it takes place over a 30-year period, just as "Forrest Gump" did. His life's work is about developing young people into responsible adults who make positive contributions to society. The very challenge he faces in the beginning of the movie becomes his field of expertise as the movie unfolds. Very difficult to get through the end without shedding at least a few tears.
For everyone saying that this music "doesn't sound like it took 30 years to write", this scene is not entirely about the music. It is about celebrating the life of Glen Holland and all of the lives that he touched. The music is good XD and it is a very emotional and dramatic scene. If it doesn't get you teary eyed then something is wrong with you.
kevin barker They also need to realize that it took him 30 years to complete it because he was also raising a son, teaching music, being a band director.... That was kind of the whole damn point, that after all of these years he was FINALLY able to see his completed symphony performed.
I am especially C. Here is a man who devoted his life to something great and for most of his life felt that he sacrificed so much of himself for nothing more than a paycheck. What he didn't realize until that moment was that he was more blessed than he could have ever imagined.
As has been noted before this music has been heavily edited down to 30% of its original length. Composer Michael Kamens original piece lasts for over 8mins of which this is only the last three mins...and serves as a euphoric finale to a beautiful first 5mins. I hope that one day a directors cut is made with the full piece reinstated.
I hope that one day this hollow meaningless cheap music is forever forgotten... The character took decades to write THIS? Mr. Kamen was drunk when he concocted this; not the highest point in his career.
Well in my opinion this is absolutely horrible, but its not about what it sounds like, its about why its there. In this case, it is the finale of one of the most inspirational and emotional movies like ever and this song, as bad as it was orchestrated, is a true reminder of what people can do when they set their minds to something. I could personally listen to this over and over again because it reminds me of my band director and my fellow musicians and all the love they have shown me and the inspiration they've fed me. And also this reflects the effects that can come from perseverance and making the right decisions as Mr Holland did, which led to this. For anyone spreading hate comments, watch the movie again
My emotional impact was unbelief. This is what Holland composed over so many years? What a piece of...! Good that the character didn't try to make a living as a composer.
It doesn't matter how good the opus is - it's the journey through life that led to the finale. I loved the message of this movie. Sometimes what WE want out of life is superseded by life itself - and the outcome can be more rewarding than we ever imagined.
There is no finer and more sublime expression of our soul and our humanity than the music we make. Music is not only the sound of our voices but the symphony of our hearts.
The first time I watched end scene I actually cried. Knowing that music can not always be a sustainable career, it makes it especially emotional to those who take music seriously.Throughout the entire movie we see the ups and downs of Mr. Holland's life and in the end the orchestra competes his "Opus", and his hard work is finally recognized. This scene perfectly captured that moment. As of this day, I like to think that this movie is the reason why I never gave up playing my instrument (the trombone) in elementary school, high school, and now college. Mr. Holland's Opus is one of the most inspiring films I have ever watched, and will still watch in the future.
When you realise how long he had to endure doing what he initially felt he wasn't meant to be doing, but then discover his struggles, trials and tribulations fuelled that opus, then seeing and hearing it all come together in front of all the people who meant something to him... the Defining Moment of his life.
It's a shame that music/the arts are dying in our schools. It's hard to believe that in a country with a $14 Trillion GDP & some of the highest taxes in the world, we can't find the money to keep it alive.
If people didn't love music and fought for music, music would not be how it is today in our schools and everywhere. Music is the true expression of how we feel yesterday today and tomorrow. Mr holland is a great movie of the past and is still today.
Mr. Holland is one of those teachers that you need in life. Without him telling you to push your limits even further, you'd get nowhere in life at all.
His son was born deaf. That was one of the main themes of the movie-- their relationship was strained because he didn't think he would be able to share the most important thing in his life, his music, with his son. He was bitter and angry and almost expecting him to just change or get better, until he had to learn to accept his son the way he was, and find a way to change himself and his music instead.
For those who are sensitive and loves music and life, want to understand how they intertwine and realize how the character can be more than it is, this film is a Masterpiece! Congratulations to the musicians and teachers that have taught more to this beast called Richard, that makes me go to tears, all the time I see this scene and this interpretation: unfairly lost the Oscar .. it was perfect Greetings from Brazil, who loves music in all its splendor!
and I say AGAIN cause I say it every time I see this clip, no matter who is posting it. I LOVE this movie. This scene is Richard's best performance, hands down. The emotion he puts into this is indescribable. I wish I could tell him how much I appreciate it.
4:40-4:50 AWESOME way to close the symphony!!!! Goes to a three second pause, and then the drum bass finishes it with a last note! Gives me goosebumps all the time!!! Wonderful movie!!!
@daveyj10 you haven't a pulse if you think that composition wasn't good. It may be simplistic but its powerful and inspirational. I STILL tear up when i watch this excerpt BECAUSE of the composition.
always loved this movie but the events have rung true. Back in 95 when I was still in school we could easily taken arts classes, in fact it was required! I am a college graduate now, and when I went back to work at my own high school all the arts were cut. That & also there only seems to be a handful of teachers per school that make or care enough to make a difference in a student life. "You can cut the arts as much as you want, sooner or later these kids wont have anything to read/write about"
For those of us who have had the opportunity to experience similar music venues in life, this movie says it all. There's more to music than just words or notes set to a tempo, it's the voice of the heart. Music can paint a canvas, share pain and agony, give wings to the soul, or simply relate the beauty and solace of being alone. For some, it's an escape. For others, it's a warm smile, a gentle breeze or memories of times long past. It can lift you up and it can let you down. The language of music is universal. It can be understood by both young and old alike. I, for one, am all the better for it.
Not a band geek, but I am a choir nerd and proud of it. I get shivers and goosebumps whenever I watch it and there are several parts where I tear up in it ^^
This movie always makes me cry at the end. My band class did this song on the day of our graduation. It was fucking magical. We were all crying as we were playing it.
This was a powerful ending and it breaks my heart that his son will never hear this glorious piece of music. Coming from a high school musician, Mr. Holland has my dream job and I would absolutely love to end my career in music like this
I know how difficult it is to put our mind to it, when we're busy everyday with "mundane petty daily routines" like providing for our family and being a father/husband. Hell, it's a miracle An American Symphony is ever finished at all, in my opinion. Teaching music in school during the day, music lesson in the evening, driving lesson during school break, and probably still can't make ends meet. Both my parents and my grandfather were teachers, too, so I know their struggle. My grandfather (RIP) and father (RIP) never finished their book projects, either. They sacrificed their dreams for the family. Yea I understand this music piece may not sound very impressive to some people with fine taste. But it hits me in the chest. I cry everytime I listen to this. Well, the perk of being a pleb I guess, easily impressed and awed.
That lady in the crowd, with the curly hair and spectacles was Ms. Rowena Morgan herself!! She is ofcourse, much older here and it was she who knew that Mr. Holland was writing his Opus! And it was she who wanted to give back something to Mr. Holland for his sincerity and guidance. Obviously, she realized by then, that he did the right thing in not following her to NY.
Such a great movie and a perfect ending. As if his Opus wasn't already perfect, I love that he wove in the Beatles' chord that lasts forever at the very ending because we learned earlier how the Beatles and particularly John Lennon impacted him when they created the scene of him dealing with his sorrow the night John Lennon was murdered. We are YOUR symphony Mr. Holland. We are the melodies and notes of your opus and we are the music of your life!"
I would love to believe he didn't spend 30 years writing this....but what is meant by his wife and son having spent 30 years...is for Mr. Holland to have this moment, where he plays his music in front of amused audience...a moment for which he lived his life...where his life became complete....its a great movie...and in some cases its better to enjoy the emotional flow in the heart that to figure out what is right or wrong...
I don't think it matters nearly as much as the emotion of the scene. It is the sheer power of this teacher who is at the end of his career and realizes just what an impact he made to all of those students. I think that's far more important than how he conducted, luxaurum.
OK, this is about the film's composer, MICHAEL KAMEN ... and all of us. 4 years after this movie was released, Maestro Michael Kamen collaborated Metallica with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra releasing the album S&M. That and this movie with one definitive word: EPIC!
@Dave14yang when we were in school we had a music teacher who was exactly like this, and we made sure to let him know we were grateful for everything he did for us before we left. he's retired now but we always thank him when we see him!
thumbs up if A) you're a band geek and proud of it; B) you get shivers whenever you watch this movie; and/or C) you still cry at the end of this movie!!

It was orchestrated for a student band reunion. Was it a symphony for a great symphony? Maybe not although I would like to hear it
Perfectly imperfect
Amen!!!
Exactly. It's superficially about music, but really, it's about life, hence the reason it takes place over a 30-year period, just as "Forrest Gump" did. +Bayougirl78 That is hardly a completed symphony. IT was only 3 minutes long and the quality is... oh well, its only a movie.
There is a longer version of the song... just couldn't fit the film... its on you tube. Find it!

Yep....no matter how many times I watch this scene....goosebumps and tears, every damn time
I am especially C. Here is a man who devoted his life to something great and for most of his life felt that he sacrificed so much of himself for nothing more than a paycheck. What he didn't realize until that moment was that he was more blessed than he could have ever imagined.
I'm Japanese, but I was impressed with this movie and music. It is a model of life.
Still rocking this song in 2019
Loved this movie and loved the music from it. Taught me a valuable life's lesson that good deeds have a wider effect than expected.

+rouncer74 Well, it made me want to run out of the theater, does that count? 30 years of work for this?

Completely agree. Sadly with music removed so much from our culture, there are too many people today with no soul that music provides.
Must be hard going through life with no soul
My emotional impact was unbelief. This is what Holland composed over so many years? What a piece of...! Good that the character didn't try to make a living as a composer.
back when teachers were still appreciated and respected the way they always should be.

Ron Halpern thank you for this😢
The whole American Symphony on the album is incredible the way it builds up to this. Kamen was one of the greats.
This movie, this final scene will forever bring a tear to my eyes. In my opinion this was Richard Dreyfas' greatest role.

I can watch this movie over and over again. It's just that touching. I love his final masterpiece. Just great!
anyone with a history of band class knows the emotional impact of this movie never lessens or disappears, still hits me every time
On of the best OST in the movie history
I really love this film!
If people didn't love music and fought for music, music would not be how it is today in our schools and everywhere. Music is the true expression of how we feel yesterday today and tomorrow. Mr holland is a great movie of the past and is still today.

One of the best movies ever, when america was still a Godfearing Nation and corruption was not ruled by plausible deniability.
and I say AGAIN cause I say it every time I see this clip, no matter who is posting it.

This is the best piece of music ever written ❤👏👏👏
a beautiful movie..
i love this film and it makes me cry all the time i watch it
@daveyj10 you haven't a pulse if you think that composition wasn't good. It may be simplistic but its powerful and inspirational. I STILL tear up when i watch this excerpt BECAUSE of the composition.
This piece of music deserves recognition. It's moving, inspirational & I can't wait to see Richard Dreyfuss in another blockbuster! Brilliant!

Fantastic movie fantastic music
This movie always makes me cry at the end. My band class did this song on the day of our graduation. It was fucking magical. We were all crying as we were playing it.
I remember seeing little snippits of this movie when I was in elementary! It's amazing how I ever came back to this charming movie
This was a powerful ending and it breaks my heart that his son will never hear this glorious piece of music. Coming from a high school musician, Mr. Holland has my dream job and I would absolutely love to end my career in music like this
His son "heard" it if you watch the scene check his shoes out and the box he's holding he'll feel the music through vibrations etc
They nailed it on the horns just beautifully played wow.
this just maybe the most underrated movie of all time.
“The American Symphony”
Such a perfect title for a truly beautiful and powerful piece of music.
The ending always makes me cry. Whilst crying I made this review.

Ive seen this movie 5 times and I cry every time,Richard Dreyfess is an absolute gift from God!!!
One of my favorites.
Touching way to end the film. You see that Holland after the symphony is happy and content.
I Still get chills from this part and i've seen the movie dozens of times!!!
I get goose bumps everytime I play this either on U-Tube or CD. It reminds me of mountains and the greatness of being alive! ;-)
The “joyous sound” of music is the soul of humanity.
“Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful... beautiful... Cole.”

Most of our FAVORITE movies contain within, the music that has interwoven fond memories from our past...
This movie is criminally underrated
大好きな映画。音楽家になれず音楽の先生に甘んじた人生を、根こそぎひっくり返されたこのフィナーレに乾杯!
@Dave14yang when we were in school we had a music teacher who was exactly like this, and we made sure to let him know we were grateful for everything he did for us before we left. he's retired now but we always thank him when we see him!
Loved it! I definitely gotta watch this movie as one of my first repeat faves, to start off 2011.
I LOVE this movie! I just wish that we had seen what happened to Rowena.
One of the best ever ending films...
Such a triumphant piece.
Beautiful music.
Great piece of music from the great Michael Kamen in a great movie!
A tear-jerker if there ever was one.
The expressions on his face. He's just incredible.
Connie Brown I had a junior high school teacher who made those faces when he conducted. Dreyfuss reminds me so much of him in here.
"American Symphony" is Disney music at it's best! Listen to anything at the parks and it is all the American Symohony
This is a great film. Perfect for a lazy Sunday with the fire on :)
I really cried on this part.
this song still gives me chills! so good!
It is the Trumpet Scream / Split at 4.41 that does it for me - Fabulous.
Im watching that movie right now. Emotional
NOW THIS WOULD BE A PERFECT ENDING FOR 2020!!!!
One of the most moving films Iv seen.
I love this part!!! I live for music!!!
That trumpet send shivers up my spine that "D" KILLS ME!!! Thank for the post.
The Best Compision of the Film
i cry everytime i hear this it touchs me so deeply its amazing
Such an awesome song!!!
Such an amazing piece.
at first i did not really like the piece then I kept listening to it and discovered new joys! :)
Gives me goosebumps every time!!
I'm playing a song called Mr Holland's Opus. It's a combo of American symphony, visions of a sunset and something I can't remember
thumbs up if A) you're a band geek and proud of it; B) you get shivers whenever you watch this movie; and/or C) you still cry at the end of this movie!!
I don't know how i got from Saber's Edge by Takeharu Ishimoto to this, but..not bad. I like it.
