  • When you have good things happen to you in life, do you feel guilty? Or when you get a promotion at work... do you get a strange feeling when you see your former workmates?
We can feel guilty for so many things, even the good stuff that happens (as if we need one more thing to feel guilty about!). In this blog post, Dr. Jamie Long - Ft. Lauderdale Psychologist tackles success guilt.
Guilt is our mind’s moral thermostat. It’s meant to click on when we’ve veered too far from our values and what’s important to us.
However, many of us have a glitch in this thermostat meaning that we might feel guilty when it’s unnecessary and unhelpful. An example of this is feeling guilt for our success.
This blog post shows us how to shed unhealthy guilt. Click the link below to read more and share with those who might benefit from reading.
You might be surprised to learn that this guilt has an evolutionary origin, meaning that we’re instinctively influenced to stay within the confines of our pack. The pack can be our family, our group of friends or our colleagues.

My dad, who is a millionaire used to say. There are always gonna be people who have more money than you always gonna be People who have less and your job is to be bothered by neither... Now that i'm wealthy myself I understand this. The only time I think about broke people is when i'm strategizing how NOT to become one of them AGAIN! I have zero use for them. These are facts. I could care less what others think & i feel no guilt! Most people who are not successful in life have only themselves to blame.

So we aren't responsible for anyone else except ourselves right? I am tired of feeling responsible for my family and other people. I just want to not care but my inner thoughts fuck with me lol that's why I am here

@richardhernandez5808 I didn't mean it that way. I am responsible for my employees and I care for my family. You do have responsibilities to people in this life. Just not those "poor me" folks with a victim mentality who is not doing anything for themselves. That's who you avoid.

My problem is different, I want my family and friends to be successful as me. But I feel frustrated because I see how much they struggle and they can't do it. So I fee guilty.

I been dealing with this since I was a little kid. We are not responsible for anyone else except ourselves. We have to let them fall and not help them get back up. It isn't our responsibility.

@@richardhernandez5808 That's the opposite of how us humans have survived for thousands of years. We are social animals, not solitary animals. We are only alive now because of the help and support of others. We are meant to live in villages, in families, and help each other.

I'm working through this now. I definitely stand out from the rest especially among family members, as I should. However, I try to stay humble. I can never blend in, I'm 6'5, black American, etc. I have to squash this.

I disagree, with only the part that defines success. Success isn’t measured in how well you do vs others, it’s a word defining one meeting a personal goal. It’s not good to think your better than people just because you have more which equals happiness because those people who you are so called “more successful than” may measure their’s different.

Yes, it sounds like we’re on the same page. In this video, Dr. Jamie encourages you to define what you deem as successful and judge yourself based on your definition of success.
      Thanks for the comment!
